ive not heard off that . are they both the same version of stick - , force stop on them and clear cache - might be a lack of ram or something ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7 Bcarty

ones a regular stick not 4K and then the other is a Firestick lite which is brand new so not sure how it’s happening on both - for some reason it’ll play the featured live tv no bother but anything else and the app closes itself straight away, force stop and clear cache didn’t seem to work, not sure if i installed incorrectly or something, thanks

sounds like an internet issue are you running a vpn / dns to use them > addblocking type features on vpns can cause apps not to play correctly due to blocking adds etc

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7 Bcarty

Nah no VPN or anything on them, do you know the best installer to use to get the app on firestick? gonna uninstall and try again, thanks

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 6,034 Mod ✭✭✭✭Nowso

that installer is the only one ive seen to work on them apps . make sure you have all 3 parts of the app selected when installing it

before uninstalling can u connect it to your phones internet and try play the weather or something on it. to make sure its not internet related

Thanks, yeah checked on phone all was fine - last time i installed it I used a wifi installer to send the files over to the stick, I assume that was incorrect?

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 6,034 Mod ✭✭✭✭Nowso

yeah i use an old version of wifi file explorer app after extracting the files with 7 zip

I use Nord and this happens occasionally for me for all overseas streaming services.

    Always resolved doing the following:

    • Go to "Settings" → "Applications" → "Manage Apps" in the settings and select the app.
    • Select "Force Stop" then "Clear Cache"
    • Go to "My Device" or "My Fire TV" → "Restart"
    • After restarting, go to NordVPN app and check correct VPN is on.
    • Then go back and start selected streaming app.

Having bought a firestick last week, I sat down today to see if I could sort out the RTE Player having had no joy with discussing the app. I thought I was finally set when I found this thread to discover the site hosting the APK got shuttered today 😭😭😭.

I had it working briefly with screen mirroring a few days ago, but that's stopped working as well (sound and control overlays - no video). It won't allow access in Silk either.

The player continues to be one of the biggest poc around, but I'll report back if I make progress.

Can anyone tell me if I can buy a Roku stick in Tesco?

    Thank you

Any recommendations for a Fire Stick/ Roku Stick from Amazon.uk that works in Ireland?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,514 ✭✭✭JMcL

I think they all work, it's more that Amazon won't ship the frequently discounted UK versions here. If you have the means of ordering it through the north, that's probably the way to go. For what it's worth, I ordered mine through Currys, and it worked out cheaper than the "international" version (€65 Vs £69 for the 4k Max) and the one I got came with UK apps pre-installed saving a bunch of sideloading

anyone have a link for bbciplayer for phone please?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,109 ✭✭✭wassie

Plenty of sellers on Donedeal for new Fire TV sticks, including latest versions - they are all the same devices as UK. All work here once you setup with your own Amazon account.

Are you using an Amazon account with a default UK address? I thought that access to the default UK apps on a new stick disappears as soon as you enter account details with an Irish address?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,109 ✭✭✭wassie

No it depends what region your Amazon account is set to. This then dictates what apps are available in the app store.

You can check what region its set to in your Amazon account under

Your Account → Manage Your Content and Devices → Preferences

No. To clarify I ordered it through Currys - not Amazon - for collection instore. They were out of stock before Christmas so it was ordered. I imagine what happened is that somebody in the Currys warehouse in the UK grabbed a UK stick and dispatched it. I've no idea if this would hold for all orders, or indeed for just going in and buying one over the counter (I imagine not) so I probably got lucky

all the ordered online sticks in currys Ireland are posted over from england

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 46,860 ✭✭✭✭muffler

    It seems that way alright.

I find it a bit strange though that Currys are the only "high street" retailer that sells all types of firesticks here in Ireland. Makes you wonder how legit that is bearing in mind that Amazon won't sell them here and Argos couldn't sell them here either before they closed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,109 ✭✭✭wassie

The Irish Curry stores are probably buying them from their Northern Ireland counterparts (which is a separate operation, both owned by Currys PLC). Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland are part of a single market for goods, thanks to the Northern Ireland Protocol within the Brexit agreement. How they actually deliver these I couldnt hazard a guess, but either way it will be legit.

Amazon (located in Great Britain) aside from licencing agreements, could choose not to for a number of other reasons, such as market segmentation & content availability (eg UK Firesticks have Alexa setup specifically for UK).

Argos made the decision (Jan 23) to close its doors before the Windsor framework was in place (Oct 23).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 46,860 ✭✭✭✭muffler

But years before the Windsor framework (and I doubt if that changed Amazon's licencing agreements) and when Argos was open for business here we were all part of the EU yet Amazon wouldn't sell their firesticks here (apart from the international version) and they didn't allow Argos to sell them either. Just saying.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 958 ✭✭✭Trevord

Ya. I think it's Amazon's own decision not to sell them in Ireland. The fact that UK TV apps feature in the marketing but they are geolocked (and not everyone knows how to get around that) might mean that they'd get hassle on their support desk from Irish customers if they did ship them here. What do Curry's say when customers turn up saying that the BBC Iplayer doesn't work?
