he can’t even manage a bit of hate watching 🤣 I mean can anyone seriously believe a word he says. That hotel over in the west probably only gets 2 tv channels anyway

In the hotel over in the West they show videos of himself and various other "celebrities" on a TV beside the urinals in the jacks. Seriously.

am glad to see that the thread is still very alive. I would hate to think that ‘ the anointed one is waiting for it all to die down so that he can ‘ slip back into RTE/Newstalk

Sorry, but you can't get the RTE Player in the UK? Is that actually right? I'm almost never there for work so I wouldn't know, but that can't be true?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,943 ✭✭✭GSF

I think you have to pay to watch non news programmes so that was likely the stumbling block for a man who never paid for anything

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,739 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

Anyone with the slightest bit of know how would be able to watch the rte player in London.

He has seen Kielty host the LLS, he only pretending he hasn't so it looks like he has moved on.

How to answer this….it depends. it’s technically an Ireland-only service and not supposed to be accessible in the UK - in the same way the BBC streaming service is geo-locked to the UK. You can of course bypass this with a VPN and there are other ways to access it but that’s not for discussion here (against the rules apparently).

I have been able to access it without a VPN in London and Edinburgh - maybe my Mac hadn’t “noticed” I was out of the country but it has worked on occasion. Other times it doesn’t, even through a VPN. I have a close friend who lives in London (no, not Ryan) who whenever he tries to use it by means fair or foul says he has “about a 1 in 4” success rate of accessing it, mainly for sport - which invariably means he will go to one of the many bars in London showing said event - sometimes via the player apparently. In short, it’s even more unreliable than it is here.

I'm living in Spain at the moment and can access it any time I want on the laptop via an Irish mobile phone. I've also used this system in Germany, Austria and Italy (where I usually work). I assume Tubridy has an Irish and UK phone.

Only surprising thing is that I watched the Toy Show on it as a young lad of a school friend was on it and it worked perfectly for the whole show. I'm more used to it collapsing on itself after 15 minutes.

I have a relative living in the UK who has held onto his Irish mobile phone, He can access the RTE player using it, along with other geoblocked Irish media. I assume he's doing so using the mobile network rather than WiFi.

I'm inclined to believe Tubridy if he says he hasn't watched the LLS. It's the equivalent of somebody keeping a close eye on their old job after they've moved on - I don't believe many people ever do that. That's before you consider Tubridy's baggage. We don't know if he left the LLS voluntarily or as an attempt to sidestep the upcoming storm. Watching the Late Late Show or tuning into Oliver Callan in the mornings are painful reminders of what he has lost.

Plus if you worked somewhere for years and supposedly made friends with colleagues you'd want to check in to see how the old crew are fairing now, but it just shows how little he thought of those he relied on.

Well he never looked at the LLS when he was doing it. If he had he would have realised how bad he was.

Terry Wogan said once that he got that advice off Eamonn Andrews; always rewatch the show with a couple of people from your team, and don't have an atmosphere in the team that they cannot critiscise you. You learn and get better. Parkinson said his best critic was his wife as she wouldn't hold back if he was poor. Tubridy never reviewed anything before or after, so yeah, it's possible he hasn't seen Kielty. Also a lot of people outside of the Noel Kelly circle have been very much in praise of Kielty since he started.

Well he was happy to lie to their faces about taking a pay cut in solidarity with them so it’s hardly a surprise that he thought these people were beneath him.

Huh? "I'm embedded in the UK?" The man who comes back to Dublin every second weekend, leaves London at the height of the summer social season and, by all accounts, presents a show with a bias towards all things Irish is "embedded" in UK life?

Also, he is trying to take credit for Kielty's appointment while also being sly about it. He said Kielty was "close to the top of my list" so he's saying he was keen on Patrick to replace him but he wasn't top of the list. Quite the backhanded compliment.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,163 ✭✭✭Peter Dragon

Well you’d have to assume the top of the list was reserved exclusively for NKM clients of course, but Kielty was certainly in the next score or so…..very generous indeed.

Embedded is a strange word to use to describe his residence in the United Kingdom. It’s suggests a certain lack of permanence and detachment. Like he’s a war correspondent. He’s not exactly integrating!

Agreed. I put it down to his poor use of English, in general.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,769 ✭✭✭yagan

Embedded, awaiting reassignment. That's what it sounds like.

Maybe he meant immersed but didn't have anybody to help him with his English homework (or do it for him).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,739 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

He has form when it comes to the incorrect use of words.

    A delicious book?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,619 ✭✭✭Tork

I associate the word embedded with journalists during the Iraq War. These were journalists who were attached to military units fighting in that war, and therefore were subjected to control by them. I'm sure many of the journalists in question didn't like this but felt they had been forced into it by circumstances beyond their control.
