It looks like Clint (the aussie guy) who was PD at Nova is leaving to go back to Australia based on his Instagram?

I've noticed they don't play Picture This.

Looking back through their early hour playlist for Sunday morning on IrishRadiolive.com, I found that they did play, around 12:49am... "Talk You Down" by The Script.

And only a short while after a Bad Company, Kinks, Van Halen triple-play...

(Radiohead were on after the aforementioned BC-Kinks-VH trio.)

Anyone know where Emily Bru came from?

Saw her on IG and she seems a lot older than she sounds so was curious.

    *Brew

I think she was on Xmas FM before joining Nova.

    Not sure.

Picture This, on a bit of an unrelated note, seem to be the only one of those safe, wishy-washy, pop-rock Irish bands I haven't heard on Nova. Dermot Kennedy, Gavin James, Kodaline, The Coronas... but not the boys from Athy.

I'd love to hear a bit of Charli XCX or Sabrina Carpenter on Nova for a change 😂

(If it wasn't obvious enough, I'm joking)

    4 Non Blondes - "What's Going On?"

Neil Young - "Keep On Rocking in the Free World"

The irishradiolive "recently played" section is hilarious. Can they not get the song titles of the aforementioned two songs right?

Edit: Just thought of another one. "Last Night" by The Strokes.

Whoever types in the song names into the system also seems to think "ELO" is the actual name of the band, and clearly couldn't have been bothered to type "Electric Light Orchestra".

In fairness today, they had a live breakfast with PJ, the rest of the day appeared to be live too.

The #6 on this list at time of typing, "Hero" by Chad Kroeger, he of a band I like to describe as a poor man's Nirvana, is very similar to "Kiss from a Rose", a song Nova would NEVER play.

Both were used in superhero films as well.

As for the song above it, they never ever play the original 1982 blues-rock version (with Jon Lord no less on keys!), but always a heavily synthesised, saccharine, polished version that wouldn't sound out of place on a Michael Bolton album.

Kieran McGuiness is growing on me a lot the last few weeks/months. Always plays a good range of songs and is full of decent chat.

When was the last time Nova updated its playlist? It seems to have stagnated now for some time. Also, a lot of the more classic rock-oriented songs they used to play never get played on the daytime shows anymore, for example when was the last time you heard "Jet Airliner" by The Steve Miller Band on the station?

Edit: as I update this, they're playing that Chad Kroeger "Kiss from a Rose" rip-off again.

I heard Black Dog by Led Zeppelin yesterday evening on Radio Nova. I don't recall ever hearing that particular song on Nova before.

Edit: with the possible exception of Pat James' Off the Record at some stage, when it used to be on Radio Nova as opposed to online sister station Nova Classic Rock.

It's a great tune, and Nova should play it more often. And Led Zeppelin in general!

The daytime playlist is getting a lot less rocky. Lots of George Ezra, Keane etc. Don't like it.

I don’t get the point of the movie reviews from Clint. That new Cameron Diaz / Jamie Foxx film sounds crap, he says as much about the script, effects etc then he gives it 4.5 stars saying he doesn’t know why he loved it.

Any chance of was because Andrew Scott was in it I wonder? 🤔

Dee Woods just played Beat It by Michael Jackson because Eddie Van Halen played on it.

I don’t recall hearing any MJ music on nova in years, but I don’t regularly listen to the 80’s shows so I could just be missing them being played. Or perhaps he doesn’t match the nova genres?

(I had assumed he was blacklisted from the playlist.)

Yeah, Mumford? F off. Dee woods , f off.

They were better, more honest ten tears ago

Irish radio provides only MOR mush.

    I'm partial to your abracadabra,

I'm raptured by the joy of it all.

Beat It is a rock song and was a massive cross over.

MJ is not blacklisted from any playlist. His music is too popular, he's too influential and huge. He's also not been found guilty of anything so…

I recall in the early days of Radio Nova that Enda Murphy used to present in the evenings - the slot now occupied by Greg Gaughren. I happened to hear Enda one evening when he was playing/reading snippets of something like the greatest guitar riffs. One of them was that guitar solo from Eddie van Halen on Michael Jackson's Beat It. I remember Enda saying something along the lines of that of course they would not play the whole song as it did not fit into Radio Nova's music. It seems that this view has been revised since.

If we're getting George Ezra, Keane, and that god awful banjo band who I can't remember the name of, we deserve a bit of MJ too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,963 ✭✭✭its_steve116

Mumford & Sons are the band you're probably thinking of.

Florence and the Machine, George Ezra, New Radicals, I heard on Sunday. And Hozier. Thought it must have accidently tuned in East Coast FM when I heard George Ezra, but no. This was in a relative's car. MJ would be some welcome relief! It certainly didn't encourage me to reconsider my decision to switch off all but Kieran McGuinness.

I got into a bit of a spat with one of the presenters a few years ago because I put up a post saying that it was a good job that Nova shared the same building as Classic Hits, they could nip downstairs and grab their cd's and play them as there was little to choose between them.

When it first started it was quite a decent station, but now it's just another Radio Bland FM.
I know they have to play the game, but any station that plays the above and Dermot Kennedy, Duran Duran, Soft Cell and UB40 as much as they do is just the same as every other station.

Oh for the days of the test transmissions when it really played some great stuff.

Only listen in on the drive into work in the morning, just can't handle the banal deejay talk anymore, and the same songs over and over and over again….

    But that's just me..
