what stations provide the supposed 'classic rock' niche for those people who do not live within the broadcast area of nova?

Yet they seem to have something against Rory Gallagher.

If they are going to play Soft Cell, someone should tell them that Soft Cell had more than one hit (you know the one!).

Re UB40, I would not mind if they played a few of their earlier songs such as their wonderful debut single Food for Thought.

Just wondering what definition of 'rock' isn't met by Florence and the Machine? Or Hozier and Dermot Kennedy?

And how acts like Fleetwood Mac, ELO or Bob Dylan don't fail the same tests?

    And why it matters?

The rule seems to be "if I don't like it, it's not classic rock".

Soft Cell's Bedsitter is starting to be overplayed on some stations, but probably not Nova.

Food for thought is another UB40 hit that is getting overplayed also, along with One in Ten.

I think stations like Nova may have to delve deeper into artists like these, to satisfy the listeners 'havent heard it in years' curiosity.

They’re doing a segment over the weekend along the lines of ‘50 best / most influential female musicians in history’.

They’ll be struggling with their roster of songs, hard to see them playing Nina Simone, Whitney Houston, Aretha etc 😂

I expect a lot of Stevie Nicks and Joan Jett

They have played Aretha's "Respect" on their daytime shows.

No Janis Joplin or Joni Mitchell in their countdown of 50 women who shaped music.

whuh? 50 women who shaped music, and both tina turner and florence welch feature twice by the time you get from 50 to 40?

    alanis morrisette features 4 times!

that list is so bad it's insulting.

Alanis Morrissette 4 times. Blondie 4 times. Cranberries 4 times. Florence Welch 4 times. Fleetwood Mac 5 times! though that covers both Christine McVie and Stevie Nicks - the latter of whom also gets one nod as a solo artist.

and one of the fleetwood mac songs was written and sung by a man - but it makes the list because it's about stevie nicks. and was written in such a way as to annoy her. christ.

there are 25 artists in total on the list.

Just give away the Nova Noise prize already. Coming up to 2 years now. If you have made a competition so hard it goes on that long, you must think it was a mistake.

Whatever about the definition of rock, some of the "newer" stuff people are giving out about are over 30 years old at this stage!

8radio more my bag when I'm on my own, but Nova enough of a mix to keep me and swmbo both reasonably happy.

"Power over Me" now their currently top-played song.

Does anyone else notice that Radio Nova occasionally appears to drift off-frequency?

We have a kitchen radio with digital presets and the same in the car, and the reception is usually perfect but sometimes sounds like it's off-station

West Dublin so well within the service area. Never problems with any other station.

I'm between Celbridge and Lucan. My kitchen radio has a manual dial. Many times when I switch it on having left it on Nova, it is East Coast or even Today FM (stations I never ever listen to) that's playing. I have considered that maybe the dial has been nudged accidentally, but that's highly unlikely based on the where the radio is, and this has never happened when the dial is left on any other station.

it’s not channel hopping onto one of Novas other frequencies perhaps? Nova are on 100.3 from Three Rock but also 100.5 from Saggart so could the radio be getting confused?

(Nova also has transmitters on 95.7 for Wicklow and 100.1 in Balbriggan but can’t imagine they’d be especially powerful in west Dublin)

So Nova are going to do a day coming up with Nova noise guesses 24 times in 24 hours (1 each hour) how will that work when they are not live?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,153 ✭✭✭✭Hotblack Desiato

No. No RDS on the kitchen radio and it's turned off on the car radio.

Matt Dempsey mentioned yesterday that he will be presenting live in the early hours for at least two days next week and will be doing the Nova noise during that time.

What happened to Gerry on weekend mornings? Marty said this morning that he's now doing that shift (presumably from their home studio).

It seems to be wall to wall adverts now to me,I know it's a commercial radio station but,,,,,,

To be honest, I used to be very critical of Nova but it has really improved over the last while.

It’s, now, my “go to” station if something uninteresting comes up on during Pat Kenny, Moncrieff or Off The Ball and it’s a must between 1 to 2pm or 4 to 7pm.

Yes, there’s a little too much AC/DC, at times, but that’s hardly the worst thing in the world.

I have Nova on all day now, other than Foley on Today FM and Tom Dunne on Newstalk

I know, I know, but twice now I’ve confused the intro to ‘Back in Black’ for ‘Lawyers, Guns and Money’ by Warren Zevon.

I agree, going overboard with adverts is never a good thing.

I have Nova on most of the time, but at lunchtime I have to find something else. I can't stand the banality of dee woods (her husband marty is not a lot better, with his constant chatter about his kids no one cares about)
