Do you have a petrol station open in your town today?

It seems the local 24 hour isn't open where I live, which I've never come across before

Don't emergency services need petrol stations to remain open on a day like today or no?

Anyone else stuck for an essential or caught out by the petrol light?

Yes about 4 of them open. Cant understand how anyone would need an "essential" today that they could have sorted yesterday or any other day.

Emergency services including AGS have their own arrangements with suppliers to ensure they won't be short of fuel.

For the rest of us it's always good policy to fill up on Christmas Eve just in case.

You never know when a family/medical emergency will arise and you need to make an unanticipated journey.

    4 open, well that's convenient!

I've always assumed that any town would have at least one petrol station open xmas day but maybe that's not a thing everywhere?

I've no petrol (and ran out of tinfoil) but I'll have to wait till tomorrow cos I havent got enough to drive 30 mins to the next town.

No big deal at any rate I was just wondering about guards/ambulances etc

I think a lot of towns have one's that open for a few hours.

Some places are window service only.

True, good policy to operate from!

I my defence I didn't realise yesterday was Xmas eve, plus I can't put more than €15 petrol in my car at any one time cos theres a leak in the petrol line going into the tank.

It fills the car with fumes and that's probably not great for ya, driving and all

I hope you got a fire extinguisher off Santa. Maybe time to get that sorted while you're still alive too.

I'd no milk this morning and was absolutely horrified there was no garage open to serve me in my time of (emergency) need.

omg are you ok, how are you surviving sans tea?

Any UHT portioned packs at the back of the cupboard to tide you over?

These are real emergencies, I hope people appreciate that

I don't know where you are, but I got petrol today at Certa in Clonmel. Self service pump.

oh yeah, i've never used a self-service pump but I can check if there's any at the local petrol stations, thanks!

As soon as your mechanic is back at work get that sorted.

It's an easy fix and it could cause a fire.

Those pumps are simple to use and full instructions are on the pump.

no one wanted to fix it tbh, i was told to buy a car instead.. and that is the plan, but yeah

I've only driven the car maybe once a week at most since a couple of months ago

Having the use of the Mammy's car when I was last back in Dublin from The Continent, I found it really ( like really, really ) weird to have to leave the car and walk into a shop to pay for fuel. Hadn't done that in France for about ten years, maybe longer.

Even the pumps with the option of paying at a kiosk on your way out switch to card payments when the guy or girl in the box locks up for the night. What's holding Ireland back in this regard?

idk I only know one place locally that has them for sure, but they only have the diesel pump 'open' once they close so I've never used them

Usually if I'm getting petrol i'm getting something in the shop so it's not really occurred to me to check for them either.

It's really efficient though, definitely. Also stops some people wandering around, having a look in the shop - while their car is blocking a pump, cars lined up behind them, and nobody happy about it

Little profit is made on fuel, much profit is made in shops, hence the present situation.

I think that fuel stations given planning permission on main roads should be required to have some pay at pumps. The GO stations in NI are very convenient in this regard and I acquired some cheaper petrol today en route.

All three stations in my town have 24/7 pay at pump (one is Certa so always only automated), I think all three take the biggest fuel card (DCI) too.

Bit screwed if you entirely work in cash and have a very bad memory (to go yesterday) I guess. I only forgot the fill up bit.

Pandemic caused huge rollout of pay at pump.

Actually now that you mentioned the fuel card, I remember I've seen ambulances filling up at the Top Oil near me after closing time, it's my closest petrol station but they don't do a pay at pump petrol pump for whatever reason

Can't even see if other local petrol stations have pay at pump for petrol cos it's not on a website anywhere that I can see. Like circle k's website or texaco etc doesn't have the info

Anyway doesn't matter much at this stage. Lesson learned, pay more attention next year

fuel cards are a scam, avoid. check the online reviews.
