I know, I was just using it as a example of what early to mid 2000s Ireland was, which the poster i was quoting was talking about.

Foil arms and hog seem teenage humor to me, not very funny in my opinion. Im not a fan of the 2 johnnys but they seem ok lads, not sure why people hate them. obviously mr browns boys is the biggest load of $hit ever made.

The thing that annoys me about Brownes boys is the way after a joke they all stop to laugh at their joke. Fair enough every now and again for a really good joke but it is usually a really obvious barely amusing joke.

Because they don't want to spend the money on good writing and afraid of their lives of those being satirised writing in complaining or sueing so most of what comes out of RTE is "safe" to satisfy their legal/PR teams but also chronically unfunny.

Complete SLAPSTICK in other words. Yeah, cringeworthy.

RTE is legacy media or whatever they call it, all comedy today and maybe the past 10 to 15 years emerges through social media.

Because foil arms and hog aren't on broadcast media, meaning many people don't have the opportunity to hate them

Foil Arms and Hog are well known enough to sell out a few nights in Vicar St and tours of smallish venues in US and Oz .

MBB is cringe worthy stereotypes and well past its sell by date . Who said it's for over 50s ? More like for anyone any age with a taste for slapstick Benny Hill type humour .

The 2 J s cringeworthy attempts at humour for the younger crowd ..I am not in that focus group so it's possibly why I never took to them , not sure if I ever liked that sort of humour though ?

Benny Hill had more talent in his little finger than Brendan O'Carroll has in total.

2 Johnnies are just cringe, their dads should have used two johnnies 😁

Foil Arms and Hogg have some mildly amusing stuff but that's about it.

    I'm partial to your abracadabra,

I'm raptured by the joy of it all.

Interesting point about Benny Hill. He certainly was an actor in his day .

We spotted him on Chitty Chitty Bang Bang of all things a week ago . He was the Toymaker !

Probably true about the talent but he always creeped me out .

comedians do standup for years if they are successful they will appear on tv panel shows and on podcasts .

They use social media to promote their shows and tv appearance,s

All terrible, MBB is the lowest form of comedy out there, if indeed you could call it that.

I vaguely remember Jenny Maguire and Hilary Rose did a decent show, but Maguire stopped being funny after she changed her name and haven't seen a lot of Hilary Rose about these days

Last genuine top notch comedy(Irish anyway) i remember was Naked Camera with PJ Gallagher, used to love that show.

The Naked Camera spin off thing where he went to America in character as Jake Stephens was fupping awful.

Yeah but isn't it fine that comedy would be aimed at different audiences? If comedy was aimed at everyone, it would ge so broad and shallow as to ge meaningless.

I'm a culchie and I get the 2 Johnnies. I don't find everything they do funny. But sometimes they really hit a parody of people, or parts of the culture, which are very funny.

It's fine if other people don't get it. Why should they get it if it's parody of a culture they don't know about?

The young offenders is a funny sitcom it's now being shown on BBC 1 UK .It was shown first on BBC 3 .sitcoms have fictional characters there's. Not much chance of being sued by anyone for a comedy .that's why many tv shows have notice these characters are fictional any resemblance to real people is coincendental

Hilary Rose plays the matriarch role in the young offenders tv series on BBC/RTE. The 2024 Christmas special has just been aired. Her husband is the writer/producer so in some ways they have all their eggs in one basket.

I have never watched either of their shows, just have seen trailers. This is really desperate stuff and I cannot understand how anyone would find it funny.Well anyone over 14 at least.

Hey, what’s with the ageism ? I’m (well) over 50 and I think Mrs Brown is probably the most unfunny sitcom I’ve seen in my life (and I remember Are You Being Served ?). Dreadful rubbish. I think what especially grates is that they put it on at prime time on a Christmas night. Not like they use it as filler at 8.30 on a Monday evening or some such.

mrs browners boys is utter tripe. No surprise RTE show it, fits right in with the rest of the garbage they show.

Foil Arms and Hog seem to be quite popular in the US. It gets posted on my FB feed by others often enough.

That must be Nigel with the brie...

I'm suprised Foil, Arms and Hog have never been given a sketch show on RTE. They've been around long enough. Have they even appeared on the LLS or any other Irish chat show?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,096 ✭✭✭✭elperello

MBB is not only for lower IQ people.

A couple of my neighbours were at the 3 Arena last night for the stage show.

Two smarter more well informed women you wouldn't meet in a days walk.

(also if you don't mind me saying it's a bit harsh to refer to the two lads as a*******s, they are just a comedy duo doing no harm at all)

(also if you don't mind me saying it's a bit harsh to refer to the two lads as a*******s, they are just a comedy duo doing no harm at all)

It all goes back to the OPs question asking why the hatred for them.

It's weird that some people would use that sort of language to describe a piece of entertainment they don't like and probably never watch.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,497 ✭✭✭thereiver

Its cheap to make someone watches it it's sold to BBC in the UK I don't expect every program rte makes to be aa quality it's not for every one like not everyone watches hurling on tv or listens to heavy metal music

I expect its watched by over 50s or maybe people who are half drunk

I find it strange theres still people who watch the voice tv show when there's so much good music on YouTube

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,096 ✭✭✭✭elperello

It's actually a BBC production in association with RTE filmed in Scotland.

The reason the BBC keeps making it is that it has good audience figures. When it wanes they will drop it.

Full disclosure: I don't like it.

The TV schedules are chock full of shows I don't care for and MBB is one of them.

With all the channels available now I'm still almost never short of something to watch.

    Watch and let watch.
