    My top three

    3. Susan O Neill - Kenny's lahinch. Lovely intimate venue, last gig before everything changed with the arrival of a baby 😂

    2. Mary Wallopers - ATN. Epic set by the lads as usual, also mixed in some anti fascism which is always welcome.

    1. Eoghan O Ceannabhain - Doolin Folk festival. Absolutely mesmerizing voice, backed amazing musicians. Anyone who's into their folk/trad/Sean os needs to see him live asap.

Interesting seeing Stipe there. I always worry about going for a tribute band but I would love to hear some REM live again

An acquaintance of mine who lives there said much the same thing. He hadn't enjoyed a gig so much in years, reckoned it was stunning in every way.

I went to Air in Trinners, without doubt the worst crowd I’ve ever seen at a gig. Half of them spent the whole gig in the food area. Someone described it to me as “a real Taste of Dublin crowd” and that sums it up perfectly.

Other gigs this year included Limp Bizkit in Belfast, Depeche Mode in Dublin, Metallica in Madrid, Janet Jackson in London, and a nice end to the year with Teddy Swims, Eminem, and Muse over a few nights in Abu Dhabi.

Limp Bizkit were incredible - first time seeing them live. I’m not even a fan, I barely knew a third of the setlist but wow they put on a hell of a show. They’re playing Dublin in March next year - highly recommended.

In fairness, I only ever imagined "a real taste of Dublin crowd" referring to it as Trinners.

Nick Cave was easily the best gig I went to.

Many other gigs were great, but it would be hard to rank them.

Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds was easily my gig of the year.

Outside of that, I was lucky to get to see some cracking gigs this year too that would fill my top 10 in no particular order:

LCD, Fontaines, Taylor Swift, Rejjie Snow, Stevie Nicks, Peter Hook and the Light, The Killers, P!nk, Coldplay as well as over 50 comedy gigs between Edinburgh and Dublin.

It was a good year and I was lucky to see some great shows. I'll be happy if 2025 is even half as good.

    😊

This year was my all time largest number of gigs, 29 shows some of which were double bills/festivals for a total of 37 bands. But it was such a good year for concerts that there were another 20 bands I considered going to (or were sold out!)

    Top 3:

    Idles, Olympia, Dublin
    Fontaines DC, 3Arena, Dublin
    CMAT, Fairview Park, Dublin

    Honourable mentions:

Peter Hook, Olympia, Dublin (Joy Division material played with great intensity. New Order stuff great, they even threw in that Monaco song from the 90s)
In the Meadows, Kilmainham, Dublin (near perfect evening: weather, venue, crowd, lineup)
Crowded House/The Waterboys, Virgin Media Park, Cork (both bands I hadn't listened to in over 20 years but both brilliant and weather/venue/crowd was perfect)
Nick Cave, 3Arena, Dublin (secular religious experience, he sings like it's his last show every time)
The Last Dinner Party, Olympia, Dublin (such pure fun and their singer is a born frontwoman)
Les Savy Fav, Whelans, Dublin (everything you want them to be, I was soaked in beer/water/sweat after)

The LCD/Idles/Young Fathers gig in Malahide was also great, but I don't want to say Idles twice.

Either Fontaines DC in the 3arena or Kneecap in Belfast, leaning more towards Kneecap at the minute.

Great year of live music with new venues and new experiences. Enjoyed visiting The Academy for the first time as well as the new Co-Op Live Arena in Manchester and of course Mad Cool festival in Madrid. A few honrable mentions of a few

Coldplay Croke Park Night 4- Fantastic light show and atmosphere. Setlist was good with a nice bonus of hearing 'In My Place'

Rammstein RDS- Even with the June daylight it was a great show. I can only imagine how awesome it is in the dark

Weezer 10th June 3Arena/Green Day 27th June Marlay Park - Combing the 2 because of having missed Hella Mega in 2022 because of the Covid Bastard (should still of went tbh). It was amazing finally getting to see the 2 bands over June. Weezer was only a short but great setlist as it was only support for Smashing Pumpkins (who were amazing). Green Days setlist was perfect with 'American Idiot' in full an album that was a mainstay of my CD player back in the day
AC/DC 17th Aug Croke Park- After all the years of speculation it was great to finally see them back here. Still a great live act

Madcool Festival 10-13th July- My first time in Spain and at the festival. It was an enjoyable few days some amazing performances from 'Pearl Jam', 'Thef Killers', 'Smashing Pumpkins', 'Maneskin', 'Sum 41 among more. Was suprised at how good 'James Arthur' and 'Kneecap' were too. The heat was hard work though lowest got most of the evenings was 22 degrees

Bruce Springsteen Kilkenny 12th May- another year another Bruce gig which was great. Kilkenny was buzzing throughout the day. Starting with 'A Rainy Night In Soho' was special

Blink 182 in Kilmainham 27th Aug- it wasn't the worst gig in the world and some of the Hits sounded great but felt it was a bit flat. Not a fan of the venue but will e ndure it for 'Iggy Pop' next summer

Gilbert O'Sullivan Theatre Royal Waterford 10th Dec and The Pogues 3Arena 17th Dec- Was very surprised at how good both were. Maybe it was the 'pre Christmas buzz' but for the most part of each show felt like there wasn't a note wrong all night

Sporting moment was Ally Pally for the Darts, what an experience

2024 was a great year of gigs and The Scratch this weekend will end it very well

2025 looks good and not as 'Blockbuster' (Its expensive travelling to and from Dublin so sorry if i can't afford to travel/support the 'smaller acts or whatever')

Top 3 probably Pearl Jam, Springsteen Kilkenny and Fontaines night 1 in Ally Pally, but was a great year and very hard to leave out Smashing Pumpkins and Olivia Rodrigo.

Although probably the worst value gig I will ever go to, very glad to have seen Gallagher Squire too with Oasis obviously playing much bigger venues.

    Happy Christmas to all

If 2023 was my gateway back to regular gig going, 2024 certainly ramped it up a bit with 40 gigs in all, including some great comedy shows! Another year with a great selection of quality gigs.

This year´s best gigs for me were:

Bonny Light Horseman | Vicar Street | November

    Aoife O´Donovan / Roseanne Cash | NCH | June

Richard Hawley | Olympia Theatre | May

    Muireann Bradley | St Anne's - Ballyshannon | November

    Simple Minds | 3 Arena | March

    Other gigs of note:

LCD Soundsystem / Idles | Malahide Castle | June

Kacey Musgraves | Olympia Theatre | April

    Nick Cave | 3 Arena | November

Alex Lucero Band | COI Glencolmcille - Donegal | October

Mary Coughlan | Olympia Theatre | December

The The / A Lazarus Soul | Collins Barracks | August

    Two great Comedy gigs:

Ben Elton | Olympia Theatre | November

John Bishop | An Grianan - Letterkenny | May

I´ll have to try to take a bit of a step back in 2025. The Donegal - Dublin - Donegal run can take its toll 🚘️🚍 Also, the steady upward creep in prices, particularly the usage of VIP pricing at more regular (MCD!!!) gigs doesn´t inspire confidence.

Happy New Year to all my fellow Gig goers out there 😎 Stay safe 🎸

    Top 3 probably

    Nick Cave & Bad Seeds

    Nadine Shah

    Phospherescent

Honourable mention: Los Bitchos, MJ Lenderman, Jane Weaver, Public Service Broadcasting and Liz Lawrence

Probably the worst value gig -Gallagher/Squires in the Olympia but with the subsequent "Dynamic Pricing" for Oasis possibly now a bargain?

Most eclectic fanbase for a gig The Beat (featuring Ranking jnr) in the GS - aging Skin heads (Rude boys), Rastafarians, and Rockers.

Most energetic mosh pits - Gurriers / Fat Dog

Regrets - didn't go to Cassandra Jenkins and couldn't get a ticket for Magdalena Bay

At festivals I normally randomly "discover" a band - this year it was Biird at ATN (hope to catch them in the Button factory in 2025).

Best Outdoor Gig: Arcade Fire @ Malahide. I've seen them probably 10-15 times now but great crowd and atmosphere, and hearing Funeral sound fresher than ever. Nice selection of hits with it also. Sound in Malahide - was in Gold Circle - was perfect for an outdoor venue tbh.

Best Festival: 2000 Trees @ Cheltenham. Sorry ATN but this was just an incredible setup and mix of people. The lineup was a belter - The Gaslight Anthem, Frank Turner, Manchester Orchestra, Spanish Love Songs etc. Weather was beautiful, VIP Bar and Viewing Platform for pittance with tons of clean loos and great food.

Best Indoor Gig: Villagers Acoustic @ Castlebar. Tiny room in The Royal Theatre consisting of a beautiful setlist of new and old tunes and Conor on absolute top-form.

Most Bizarre Gig: Frank Turner (aka Giant F*cking Moth) @ Camp Turner. Secret acoustic set of his own songs and covers (including Queen's "Somebody To Love") to a few dozen people at 2000 Trees Festival.

Only got to be in the audience for 49 gigs in 2024 but if you include the 5 that I performed in, then I definitely smashed the 50. 😉

So many great gigs, I could count the ones I didn’t enjoy on one hand.

My favourite is still Das Fig/Luxury Mollusc in The Grand Social in September. And still can’t share the genius of Luxury Mollusc’s performance because he hasn’t recorded it yet.

    IMG_5970.jpeg

Thanks to all here who shared their passion, especially Dreamweapon’s folk drone recommendation amongst others.

Ireland has so much musical talent, can’t wait to start gigging again on Thursday. Bring it on!

Anyways, smashed the 50! The Scratch were beyond awesome. Got the set list as well!
