Pathfinder loses power

I have a 2000 Pathfinder with a .5L diesel engine. It loses power and revs after a few miles, and if I turn it off and start after a few seconds it fires up again and the revs come back slowly.

I tried changing the plunger unit over the fuel filter but that didn't help. what else could it be?

On a separate note (possibly), could anyone identify the cable in th photo with the yellow stripe? It is disconnected at the other end.

That looks like the main engine ground cable

Just happened to watch this earlier. Different engine but symptoms sound quite similar. Worth a shot maybe.

Could be a lot of possible causes. MAF sensor, suction control valve, injectors, crank shaft sensor, fuel filter, timing chain etc. The best thing to do is buy a diagnostic scanner, you can get some relatively cheap, and see what fault codes it throws up. Sounds like it's going into limp mode. I had a 2008 pathfinder and it started doing the same. Turned out it was a faulty MAF sensor so a cheap fix luckily. Is it blowing black smoke from the exhaust under load by any chance?

No, when it dies and you start it up again, it puts out blue smoke for a while.
I have a scanner but it won't fit the plug. Did Nissan have their own proprietary scanner connection at one stage?

Thats pre OBD2 so you need a scanner that comes with the legacy adapters (anything high end will have them)

You could flash the code on them by looping the lower 2 lh terminals on your pic with a paper clip. Loop the wires, turn on ign, after 3 seconds pull the clip out & the engine light will flash. Long flashes are 10's short are 1's. EG 3 long & 1 short is 31. google for meaning if you haven't a workshop manual. Some other similar sequence for deleting codes - I cant remember
