In the middle of catching up on some of the indie games I missed during the year. Played some Echo Point Nova as I’m a sucker for cool first person movement systems. And this is absurdly fast - combining a hoverboard and grapple hook so you and enemies are just darting around the maps. It’s terrific fun as you throw yourself off ramps, wall ride to safety, or even just jankily grapple your way back to land after what seemed like a fatal error.

The game doesn’t have the level design chops of some of its inspirations due to its modest scale, but its maps are big open floating sky islands you have to navigate between, which works very well given the movement. Combat so far is a series of arena battles, but there’s some nice extras like the Crackdown agility orbs and lots of bonuses / power ups to collect.

Jesus, I don't know if I'd have the reflexes for this but it looks insanely good fun, may go take a look at it

It has quite a number of assists and options depending on how involved you want the controls to be. I’ve heard it plays surprisingly well on a controller too, though it’s pure m&k fodder for me :)

Read a few of those reviews today and I'm just nearly at the end of playing Wolfenstein the new order so will be nice to stay with their games.

    Black Ops 6 loading screen.

    Untitled Image

Saw this on Reddit and there seems to be a few trains of thought on it. The obvious being it's lazy AI and it certainly looks like it. Some say it's deliberate, 6 fingers for BO6 and some say it's actually 5 fingers but the little finger is degloved.

I'm going with just lazy AI.

Loved that when logging on during the week. The feels.

Any interest in this soul reaver remaster? Have the game pre ordered.

The car wash in Mafia II is cool.

Do you really have to put petrol in the car or is that just novelty thing? I played the original back on the 360 but I forget if you have to keep putting petrol in the car.

Even with understanding the context of their releases and how they were received differently in the West/East, it's still somewhat mindblowing to see Dragon Quest 7 rank so far ahead of Dragon Quest 8.

It's the biggest selling PS1 game of all time there. And there was a massive gap between 6 and 7. There's also the demographics to consider. FFX came out around the same time and is one of the weakest FF games but that's the kind of demograph that's shaping perceptions of old games at the moment, the ones that grew up with FFX and dq7 as kids.

Went to see Grand Theft Hamlet over the weekend, which for anyone who doesn't know is the documentary shot entirely in GTA Online. It starts during the pandemic when two out-of-work actors have an idea to stage Hamlet in GTA, and then spend the next year or so trying to pull it off - going from Vinewood Bowl to a ludicrous, cross-map final production. One of the guy's wife is a filmmaker and captures the whole thing in-game.

It's very good fun, and captures the inevitable chaos that is trying to do any organised activity in an online world. There's one dude who shows up in a grotesque naked alien suit and becomes the absolute star of the documentary, despite not actually participating in the performance itself.

It's funny and endearing stuff. Some of the more dramatic scenes involving the main players' interpersonal strife maybe seem refined after the fact (maybe based on what actually happened, but perhaps restaged in game for maximum dramatic weight - I'm just speculating though), but it's a really fun and often strangely moving watch. All in-game footage too, other than a few real world clips at the very end.

Absolutely incredible! Where did you see it? Would love to watch it.

I saw it in the Light House in Dublin. They have a couple more screenings over the coming week but only one evening screening it looks like.

So I sort of rolled the credits on Wizardry Variants Daphne. Despite the fact that it's a mobile Gacha style game with all the nonsense that ensues its actually a fantastic game.

First the bad. You roll for characters and there's some legendaries to get with low chances to get them. Just like any gacha game. However the legendaries are only marginally more powerful and I've been rolling with a group of scrubs that have handled themselves well. It's actually quite generous in this regard.

And as a gacha game it's a bit too complicated for what it is. Equipment comes thick and fast and the upgrade routes aren't easy to get your head around. You can upgrade with money and ores to a certain level but then you have to 'unify' equipment by sacrificing a number of the same type of equipment to raise that limit. There's other upgrade routes but there is one nice feature. If you wish to change to a new weapon you can inherit your old weapon's upgrade level so you don't have to level it up from scratch.

The other thing you can do is sacrifice any gacha characters to give and upgrade an other characters abilities.

To be fair it's not so bad once you wrap your head around it. What is annoying when you are starting off is that you get no warning if you accidentally try to sacrifice a piece of equipment that you are using, or worse still, a party member. This is something I did with a level 5 fighter and had to get a replacement levelled up. You can activate a lock icon on characters and equipment to avoid this happening.

    Now to the good stuff.

Wizardry Variants Daphne is just a damn fine game. If it was a paid for game with Gacha elements removed it would be regarded as a minor classic.

It stays remarkably close to the wizardry series. The dungeon crawling is excellent. There's a lot of modernisation. Battles aren't random but initiated with enemies that walk around the environment that you might see if a party member passes a perception check. The battle system is excellent. There's a lot of skills to exploit and stuff like elemental weaknesses and buffs/debuffs that are pretty much essential to use. The game is also very difficult and can do a dark souls thing were it will let you wander into areas you are under levelled for (but will warn you). Apparently the developers took the game systems from the very well regarded PS2 game Wizardry the Forsaken Land and built the game around it.

And while the game is difficult there's also nice quality of life features. If you die that game will let you resurrection 3 times. You can lose party members permanently like in the original wizardry but the stat that dictates this replenishes over time so if you don't want to chance it just leave the game off until it's full. When I died at a particularly nasty boss the game told me to level up and what type of armour was expected.

And then there's how the game presents itself which is my favourite thing about it. It's all from the first person and it really feels like it's you leading your band into dungeons. The way your party interacts with you after battles really makes you feel attached to them. Graphically it's impressive for a mobile game, probably about PS3 level on the highest settings.

I've gotten 12 hours out of the game and not needed or felt the need to spend a penny. I'm hoping that this game is kind of like Warframe, where you don't need the micro transactions but if you like the developer then throw them some money which I probably will do considering I've gotten more out of this than some Sony/ubi games

    Some screenshots I took:

Anything to be done with a PS5 controller that is always reading the L2 button as being pushed? Is it banjaxed?

I haven't looked at the full video, so can't vouch for how easy this is, but here's the first one on youtube:

Plenty more out there. If you're not comfortable taking apart your controller, it is easier than you'd think, slightly fiddly. At least, that's the case on the Xbox side anyway.

Been playing this all evening really enjoying it. More stealth than action but the mysteries and puzzles are enjoyable. Baker does the voice well

Only played the first -part of Italy. Definitely reminds me of Riddick with a bit more immersive sims. Felt like a genius when I found the hidden area and hoping there's more like this. Always good to have a game with some actual level design.

Have played up to getting the camera as you’re free roaming in the Vatican. It makes a bad first impression with the recreation of Raiders, which I think was a bad move as it really underlines the uncanny valley aspect of the graphics and performances. But when you’re out of the tutorial proper it picks up swiftly and definitely has a lot more immersive sim vibes than I was expecting. The writing and pacing aren’t a patch on classic Indy, but as a Machine Games game it seems really fun and solid. And to be fair they’ve done a lot of work to make it feel different than an Uncharted or Tomb Raider - one more on line with the character, rather than just an endless shooting gallery (it’s a ‘punching and hitting people with easily smashed objects’ gallery instead).

They have these tiny springs that break. They usually push the trigger out so it doesn't read. I've fixed 3 of my white controllers now. Two L2 and one R2.

I got replacements on Amazon. Opening and closing the controller is simple. Putting on the spring is a bit fiddly as it's so small, you need to put hook it around and clip it into the trigger. But very doable with a good tweezers.

Any cure for left stick drift. One controller I have is unplayable with it.

Could be just dirty? However, I've found the ps5 controllers harder to take apart to clean because the mic port is so delicate, I've broken two controller mic ports already :(

Played a fair bit more this morning and am loving just wandering around finding new stuff to do, the fact as said that its not all guns Wolfeinstein with an indy skin is brilliant. Whilst the tone can be a bit hit and miss as you wonder the cut scenes are solid and nail the vibe of the movies.

it can almost be hitmanesque at times with ways to solve stuff with different disguises etc, big fan of the general maps and notetaking. I think its looking like a hit for Bethesda and a very wise choice by Xbox to start branching out these type games to a wider audience

Might be able to replace the joystick with a hall effect one like you can do on switch.

Kind scummy that Sony have cheaper out on joysticks without hall effect as this is an issue that was solved with the Sega Saturn analogue pad, the first one released during the 32bit era. Same goes for Nintendo. They charge so much for joypads now yet cheap out on parts.

It seems to have had a pretty small launch on Steam relative to some other recent single player titles, so hopefully the black box that is GamePass economics work out for MachineGames. They’ve done a damn good job here, but I’m not sure if the combo of ‘Indiana Jones’ and ‘immersive sim style gameplay’ is a recipe for a blockbuster hit these days, regardless of quality. We’ll see!

Have to say the ID tech engine is incredible and puts to shame the likes of Unreal. I've a 6900xt and everything is on ultra other than shadows that I turned down to high and I'm getting 60 fps with no hitches. 6900xt is pretty weak when it comes to raytracing but handles the RT global GI in this perfectly. Also nice to have 16GB of VRAM. Apparently performance really suffers and you have you have to turn down settings on cards with low VRAM. NVidia cheaping out on VRAM is starting to hurt them.

Also there's no shader compilation issues and no even shader recompilation stage. It's just handled through some good coding that doesn't rely on a stop gap that just throws all the compilation on to the CPU.
