It was a great save. A crash there could have cost them the title.

Delighted for Mclaren today. It has been some turn around for them the last few years. They have two very good drivers now and I know I say things I should not. I do not hate them. It will be interesting to see them both racing next year if Piastti continueds to improve and if Lando has learned much from this year.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

Verstappen is serving his community service in Rwanda this week, the FIA awards ceremony is also on in Rwanda on the 13th and Verstappen was told he has to attend the awards ceremony

Mental how long that season was, the drivers get to go off on lovely holidays on private jets and live in the holiday homes for a stint. The mechanics and team members away from the glitz and glam get a well earned break.

the season is far too long these days, it was way better when the kept it too about 16 races.

Formula 1 is in fairly good shape after that season, very good season with 7 different race winners and McLaren winning the constructors for the first time since the late 90s. Maxs great start to the season was enough to clinch him the drivers championship but he was by no means the best drivers week in week out all year which is good to see, at times McLaren and Ferrari have looked better then red bull and even a couple times Mercedes were faster which kept the season nice and competitive

A couple driver switches to freshen up the grid for next season with an absolute heap of rookies coming in next year too which is again a good thing for the sport, less pay drivers on the grid is a positive.

Plenty stories forming going in to next season too, can Max and Redbull keep it going for a 5th drivers championship in a row? Will they call it a day on Perez? Will Hamilton get back to the front of the grid with a good looking Ferrari? Can Lando go the next step and take the drivers championship? Exciting stuff.

    Mildly depressing this:

But the wait might be worth it, could be a cracker of a season from the off. The top 4 teams much closer now heading into the last year of the current regs. Will be fascinating to see how Hamilton goes in the Ferrari - hopefully they give him a good car so we can see how he fares at the front. How will Kimi do against George - would be great if he was right on George's pace from the off but for sure the lack of experience will hurt him for now. Will Piastri be closer again to Norris this year and how will Lawson (or whomever) do against Max - hopefully Red Bull produce a less sensitive car too. Plenty of reasons to be excited for the new season.

I'm genuinely excited to see what Lewis does against Leclerc in Ferrari next year. I don't like lewis, I don't rate him, but he hasn't had a great teammate probably since Alonso - when the team imploded and it affected everyone.

And this is it, Ferrari will be as nervous as anyone because Sainz was a match for LeClerc for a lot of the season. It won't be a good look if Leclerc absolutely smashes him every race weekend.

Pressure will be on Leclerc too though, he's well bedded in at Ferrari now and is super fast - but prone to mistakes under pressure. Will Lewis put him under enough pressure though, it's going to be fascinating.

    Would you rate Russell?

I’m a big fan of LeClerc and would have him after Verstappen but the gap between a LeClerc, Norris and Russell wouldn’t seem that much. I guess what I’m saying is Russell is probably one of the better drivers on the grid too.

Anyways, I think it was time for a fresh start to see what’s left in the tank. Looks like he got the move right on his end but it’s up in the air whether Ferrari got it right. All could change if one car can come on leaps and bounds like McClaren did but you would hope that won’t happen so far into the regs.

I disagree, I think it could be the making of leclerc. Imagine he smashes lewis every week. Lewis is still a top driver.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 19,955 ✭✭✭✭ELM327

For me it is clearly Max head and shoulders above everyone, then there's the next tier with leclerc, alonso, then a slight dropoff to russell, norris, and then a dropoff to the rest of the grid, then there's the f2 grid, then the f3 grid, then perez, then the traffic on the way to the race, then stroll

I'd put lewis at just below alonso's level

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,471 ✭✭✭wazzzledazzle

Well of course it would be great for LeClerc, but Ferrari will at least hope Lewis brings his qualifying back up to standard. bit embarrasing if Lewis struggles to make the top 6 consistently for them. But let's see what kind of car they have. I hope it's as competetive as the McClaren but not as fast as the RB anyway

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,471 ✭✭✭wazzzledazzle

😂 Good oul Stroll, the laughing stock of F1 and his wider family circle no doubt. I wouldn't trust him in a milk float

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 19,955 ✭✭✭✭ELM327

I don't think RB will have the fastest car next year, at least not out the gate. I expect Max to be struggling like the second part of the year. They lost newey and even the additional time for being third may not be enough.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,335 ✭✭✭✭klose

I wonder how much he actually enjoys F1 these days, he surely knows he’s the most slagged driver for years now and even when Aston was competitive a while back with Alonso racking up multiple podiums Stroll was still nowhere near him in decent machinery. Inedeed when racing point had the “pink Mercedes” 5 or 6 years ago he was pretty decent in that but it was so long ago now he can’t even really point to that for himself. Granted the life of an F1 driver is luxurious and all that but Lance could be enjoying the life outside of F1 anyways, I’d be interested to know Lawrence’s thoughts on it, he’s putting serious money and acquisitions into Aston but lance surely is not the guy for the team to make the next big step, nor a 43 year old Alonso.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,471 ✭✭✭wazzzledazzle

Yeah, it's more in hope for me that they are quickest, although as you mention, i'm not sure they will. They do have extra wind tunnel time however for finishing 3rd in the CT, and obviously they have Max, but let's see.

I don't think Merc will play much of a part and they are focusing on new regs for the following year, so i think it'll be a 4 way battle for the title, at least until one of the McClarens pull clear of the other. Then who knows, let's see if Newey can wave his wand and get Alonso in the mix, now that would be some season!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 19,955 ✭✭✭✭ELM327

I would literally and unironically trade my left ball to get Alonso in a competitive car.

Would have been nice to see a win. Shame the Red Bull and max were on fire for the early stages of 2023 when Aston had a purple patch.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,471 ✭✭✭wazzzledazzle

We saw what he was capable off a while ago(was that the start of last season 23?) and he's as quick as almost everyone on the grid. I would love it more than anything else if they were as competitive as the top cars, and i think he's still got a world title in him personally.

hmm… Perez will not be looking at this one fondly

Teams aren't allowed work on 2026 cars until January next year, I think most teams will likely shift development towards 2026 cars unless there's a close title battle (which, I suspect there will be, the last year of regs usually does, look at 2021)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,239 ✭✭✭✭Frank Bullitt

We have Leclerc entering his peak years, and Lewis well past his. I think it will be a good pairing but I see Charles having the edge, he has been part of Ferrari for years now, even before F1.

Just spotted Tsunoda is in a Red Bull for the post season test. Thats interesting.

But does it mean Perez has another 12 years on the grid 🤪

    No.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,865 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

It's a sop to Honda more than a test for tsunoda

Finished the Senna series on Netflix. It’s grand. Bit cheesy at times and I’m sure it takes plenty of poetic licence but the racing is good. Not as poignant as the docufilm which I might go back and watch.

Obviously safety has come on leaps and bounds and his death would have been less likely but I was thinking, would a race really go ahead in modern times if a driver was to pass away on the Saturday? Pretty sure the F2 race was canceled after Hubert’s accident a few years ago and Bianchi’s was during the race.

Also, many think it was the steering column that failed. Newey obviously had vested interest but doesn’t believe that was it. Just found that interesting albeit makes no difference.
