Question about battery capacity on a Renault Zoe

    I’m thinking of buying a 2017 Zoe. The ad states that it is the Expression Nav trim and that it has a 41kWh battery. Putting the reg into Motorcheck.ie comes up with Expression 2015 4DR auto, 2017. It’s hard to find the specs online - believe me I’ve looked - but what I did find says that the Expression Nav is the base model which still seems to have the 22kWh battery while the other two models have the 41kWh one. To confuse matters though, the dealer says that it is a Z.E. model and the video he sent confirms that as it is printed on the seats and elsewhere inside and is on a badge on the back. Research says the 2017 Z.E. models have the 41kWh battery. Unless I’ve missed something..

    Can anyone confirm for me which battery this car has, 41 or 22, or where I could find this out for sure? I’ve tried calling a couple of Renault dealers but they either can’t tell me despite looking up the reg, or won’t help cos I didn’t buy it from them. One guy did tell me that the traction battery is an NBT007 026kWh if that helps at all. Is there anywhere on the car where the battery capacity is shown? The dealer, who seems very genuine, says he has looked at the VIN but can’t see any battery specs there. He also said he was sure it was the 41k but acknowledges he might have got that wrong. He is willing to do a good deal on the car if I want it. Mileage is pretty good, around 50k kilometres.

    I think the battery capacity was written on a sticker on the b pillar when the door was opened.

    Ok I’ll ask him to look again but I think he already checked that sticker.

    Could the 026kWh spec above refer to nominal capacity and would that translate to 22 useable?

    if its originally an Irish registered car would be reasonably sure that a 2017 expression could be 22kw and might be a battery lease model. think it was 18 when they started to sell the 40kw model in ireland but open to correction there. however I did drive a 191 expression and that was a 22kw but battery owned! so that might be a fair indicator, hope of some use

    Thanks for that. Yeah I’m beginning to think it probably is a 22kWh alright, given it’s an Expression. I live in Dublin and mostly drive locally but I do go down to Wolfhill in Laois to visit a relative every month or two so would probably need the bigger battery for that. Don’t really want to have to do more than one charge stop if I can help it.

    The battery lease thing is a factor. What happens if a private seller or an independent dealer sells you one of those? Do you get a nasty surprise in the post from Renault at some stage? Can they actually sell the car with a lease contract still in place? Hadn’t thought of that.

    Was there battery leasing offered by Renault in Ireland?

    Almost every Zoe I've ever seen was battery-owned, leasing simply wasn't a thing.

    Well I just found reference to this in a Facebook post from 2020 so it seems to have been a thing alright. Whether there are still any leasing contracts in place I don’t know, maybe someone else does? I’ll have to check this on any Zoe I’m considering though, unless it’s all stopped.

    Battery leasing was quite popular in the UK alright, no chance the FB post was related to that market?

    I'm looking at a couple more of these. One is from a dealer, 2018, base model with only 25k km on it. Very clean. The other is also 2018, Signature with 51k but 1k cheaper, a private sale. Haven't seen it yet but the owner says the battery SOH is 91%. Is that ok? What sort of percentage SOH should I be looking for in a used Zoe anyway?

    There were/are battery leases here in Ireland. Avoid in my experience as Renault won't hold up their part of it if you test it. I had a 2015 Zoe that had a lease and I was able to buy it out from Renault. That made it far easier when it went to sell it. Battery SOH is fairly good on the Zoe due to a hidden buffer. You can check with the canze app.

    Ok thanks. How can you tell if an independent dealer or private seller is selling one with a lease on it? Would a 2018 Zoe be likely to have one?

    It would show up with having finance if you run motorcheck (or similar) on it, or you can confirm directly with Mobilize financial services (formerly RCI). It's Renault's finance arm. I believe a 2018 would be less likely to have a battery lease but still good to check.
