Went mad and treated myself to 25x bags of Olive Wood for stove, hopefully it'll be ok. Got it for 230 including 20 off for first order ( code is FIRST20 ).

Any idea what's delivery like in dublin. Do they schedule fiarly soon or just show up some random time in the future?

My oak arrived within 3 days. Both times I've ordered so far, they've rung me to check when I'm in for deliveries.

They do have different delivery companies though. First one arrived all neat on a pallet, 2nd one was just a heap.

I ordered the 40x40L bags in July for late October delivery. They arrived a few days earlier but they were much better in terms of the proportion of bigger logs than their 440kg pallet. I depend on a stove for heating so I can go through a lot, but I still have about half a 625kg pallet I got in April plus about 19 of the 40L bags from October in my shed. It can be hard to assess how much I need as its a mix of weather dependency plus how much I'm actually at home.

The first couple of times I ordered the mixed batch of briquettes plus bags but the briquettes are too big for my stove and need to be broken up. But they are easy to store. I just buy the logs now - ideally the smaller bags as I can pile them high along my shed wall. Unloading a pallet or jumbo bag just takes too long. I've pre-ordered the XL bag for mid Dec as I go through a lot more this time of year & should have time to stack them. Just hoping that the bag deters the rain as that's always my fear with a bulk delivery. I don't think I've ever paid more than 220 euro, and that includes the 625kg pallet.

Honestly stopped buying from shops & especially petrol stations as I found the wood to be damp, presumably because deliveries were left outside on very wet days & not too much care taken of storage. The big DIY stores slightly better but again have had some awful bags. Lidl recently had a moisture meter in again that is worth getting if you are looking at drying out yourself or have new fuel from an untested supplier. Generally the specialist fuel suppliers are best and value to be had in buying in bulk if you have the shed space for it.

I put in an insert stove a few months and have been burning the bagged kiln dried logs, switched to the willow warm logs the last few nights and there is some difference. Willow warm lasts longer and savage heat out if them. Looking to see now if I can buy some on bulk.

What are you all doing with the pallets the firewood comes in? I've a small enough house and the pallet wood is piling up!

I got a circular saw and chopped some up and it seems to burn in the stove grand but I'm worried if that's emitting chemicals (Rathwood pallets just seem to be untreated wood to me so am hoping its fine). The wood is riddled with nails so nail free burning is thin pickings so far.

I haven't burned wood with nails yet but am too tight to pay Panda waste to take that away so what to do? My gut feeling is feck it and burn the stuff with nails too and just pick out afterwards. Any suggestions or what do you do with the pallets?

It's a real issue. You have the cost of buying a circular saw and a bit of danger/hassle with it too. They are a nuisance hanging around.

Could do with a scheme to make sure couriers or suppliers would bring them back and reuse them.

If you've a job lot of them staking up somebody might take them, but there'd have to be demand in your area.

I slice mine up and use it for kindling in the stove. Do it bit by bit and it's done over a few days.

Anything that's left with nails in it gets burned in the firepit outside during the summer.

Is this a good deal for a crate of Kiln dried - collected? I can vouch for the quality.

That's a brilliant idea! The kids are always at me in the summer to have a BBQ but i hate cleaning it. A firepit with bbq grill seems like a great solution for untreated wood which i reckon it is.

Supercell: A jigsaw is a lot safer for cutting the pallets. It’s excellent wood for kindling and getting the fire going. (Mine were untreated.) Kindling is very expensive buy. You could avoid cutting the bits with nails, set them aside .. burn or discard.

As for Panda- I’d review the contract your on. If you’re on a pay per weight, changing contract could halve your bill and save €100’s. A monthly flat rate can work out way better. Currently it’s costing me €14 per month & after 6 mths €17.50 -not worrying about weight, lift charges etc 👍

Off topic so will keep it short 😉I rang Panda to cancel contract, they offered bout €17.50 p. month flat rate, I insisted to cancel, then they offered that price for 3years plus a credit of €100 (reimburse the annual fee for PayPerWeight contract) and some extras. Id already switched to another company. Panda are awful to deal with but will offer a deal. PPW is a ridiculous tarriff to be on…till I shopped around.

To join in here I contacted Panda today as was on a PPW working out at more than €50 per month over the past 2 years. With no negotiating they put me on €26 p/m flat fee with 100kg waste allowance per month (unlimited green/brown) which we will be within (c.80kg p/m black bin average over the past 2 years), old moto if you don't ask you don't get! Criminals all of them…

@Supercell on the pallets you have take a look for markings on the pallet, generally if there's none it hasn't been chemically treated and is OK to burn, likewise the letters HT, DB, KD, EPAL are all OK and no chemical treatment, MB is the stamp you want to avoid as they are the chemical treated ones (usually but not always blue pallets)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,808 ✭✭✭✭Supercell

Thanks for this, really helpful information, i was a bit concerned about chemicals. I don't recall seeing any markings on the wood but will definitely keep an eye out when I'm cutting it up.

Ya wood was all decent size for me. Don't know if Olive wood is all that, but didn't burn fast anyway

thks, I have a few pallets, will look out for that.

Good to know 👍 I haven’t tried olive before. The heat output seems to be higher than Oak. I’m considering giving it a try. Looks like logs in the bag (Boyles). A guy on this thread ordered Olive in a ton bag last year and got a bag full of roots which were v. poor and looked a sorry site.
