Yeah bizarre how they hand out big contracts, if he was off the books they probably wouldn't need to increase the ticket prices. Fans are paying for the mistakes of the club.

My sympathy for Shaw disappeared when he rushed himself back for England.

I know it was a big tournament, but with his injury record it was both unprofessional and disrespectful to United for him to risk himself like that.

He had missed 30+ games with injury last season, his injury record in general was a dumpster fire, he absolutely should have been rational and professional by properly completing his rehab over the summer and focusing on being fit for the new season. Instead he forced it, missed the start of the season and now still can't get caught up on fitness properly.

Not that this changes anything really, it was always rather stupid of United to be making any plans that relied on Luke Shaw being fit. But his decision in the summer was badly misjudged regardless.

Gossip columns are banging on about Amad being out of contract in the summer and hasn’t agreed a new one yet. Is that true or is it like other situations United have where they can trigger an option to extend the current deal by 1 year?

There will be rumours he's linked with other clubs. The agent will be leaking them. It's all to get a good contract fo

Need to be careful with any new contract for Amad and not make our usual mistakes.

Yeah he's been good in his last few games but he's 4 years at the club now and has 6 goals.

Obviously he's struggled to get into the team and spent time on loan, hopefully any new contract offer will reflect his time at the club and not just the last few games.

Our past mistakes would be to offer a nice fat 4 year contract off the back of a dozen good games and watch him slowly disappear and we're left wondering how we can offload him.

There’s an option for a 1-year extension that can be triggered before 1 January.

Surely the sensible play is to trigger that, and then make a decision next summer on what value to place on a new contract with a larger sample of form to base it off

They have an option of further year. All the noise from amad is he wants to stay at united a long time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48,944 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

Imo you have a tricky situation with amad cause the stories are he'd no interest in a new contract in the summer because he felt united and more specifically ETH didn't have a real interest in him.

If we were to just trigger his extension it would further indicate a lack of faith in him, while also locking him here for another year despite that.

I'm not saying give him 200k a week on a 5 year contract, we do have to be sensible, but I don't think it's a clear cut negotiation either way.

    my team for tonight:

onana, maz, maguire, de ligt, amad, dalot, ugarte, mount, bruno, rashford, rasmus.

i think amorim goes with the above but replaces mount with casemiro.

the back 3 is a mess with both Martinez and Shaw out - but then again we could never have counted on Shaw so we need to have a viable alternative to Martinez. I think he will go with Maguire out there - he played there the other day didn't he, with Martinez going to the right side? Might be a hint at that being the option.

I've also wondered if he could look at Dalot as being an option there. No a fan of it, but I think it is maybe a better option than Evans - but then what do you do at LWB in that case. You could look at Garancho there, but I don't think you pick Arsenal away for such an experiment.

    So i reckon:

Onana, Mazraoui, De Ligt, Maguire, Amad, Dalot, Ugarte, Bruno, Mount, Rashford, Hojlund.

Which i think is as 'first choice' as we could go tonight, with Martinez and Mainoo out (along with Shaw)

a pile on will start on maz shortly i reckon:

Manchester United scrapped plan for pro-LGBTQ+ walk-out jacket after Noussair Mazraoui refusal.

A United statement to The Athletic read: “Manchester United welcomes fans from all backgrounds, including members of the LGBTQ+ community, and we are strongly committed to the principles of diversity and inclusion.

“We demonstrate these principles through a range of activities, including support for our Rainbow Devils supporters’ club, and campaigns to celebrate our LGBTQ+ fans and combat all forms of discrimination.

“Players are entitled to hold their own individual opinions, particularly in relation to their faith, and these may sometimes differ from the club’s position.”

When England were playing 3 at the back, Maguire was on the left side IIRC and getting plenty plaudits for it. His best period for United under Ole was to the left of two.

With Maz on the right and Dalot at LWB it makes the transition from 3 to 4 at the back easy too when required.

I think the whole idea of rainbow laces and armbands was silly, it's just asking for trouble like with James MacLean and the poppy, just stick to the official kit and nothing else

Time is contagious, everybody's getting old.

There's a lot you can get away with in International football when you one of the big boys

Maguire played there sure, but England are better than 90-95% of teams they play each year. A lot of England games are just going through the motions and getting the win.

Utd won't be that level of dominant and he will be tested to cover space a lot more. We seen Evans struggle to push up and compact the space when he was out there.
Can't see anything but the same for Maguire to be honest

trigger the extension this month, if he keeps up the good form we can offer him a new contract in the summer.

It's nothing like that. There is no rainbow army responsible for persecuting multiple countries behind the campaign for inclusivity. It's telling people who are fans or working at the clubs that the players are accepting of them. Nothing to do with country affiliations or whatever else.

How would you feel if you were a gay fan going to a game, maybe abused for half your life over something you can't control and the players you pay your money to see can't even wear an armband or a laces to show the smallest modicum of support to you?

On Mazraoui, he's lived in the Netherlands and Germany the last few years. 2 far more liberal countries than England. Not sure quite how he can be so vehemently against wearing a coloured jacket. It's disappointing but it is what it is. As the statement says it's against the club's values which is a good line anyway.

I see Mount starting tonight too. We will have fair idea of what he thinks of squad after tonight.

Tonight feels like a real proper test. I just want see something even in defeat.

Maguire is at his best as a front foot defender looking to press and nip ahead of the attacker. So if anything I would expect the goal of getting tight will suit him. Its if he gets turned having gone for it that we will see the problems. His worst form at United came when he was mistiming those jumps and getting caught, consistently. You could seem him hesitate, miss, and be punished. if he was to do the same, yes, we'd be effed.

Beyond that… who is your alternative to play there?

Move Mazraoui (and De Ligt?). Would De Ligt be any better in the wider CB role, on either side, than Maguire?
    Play Evans?
Put Dalot on one side and Mazraoui the other? (with MDL or Maguire in the centre).

IMO maguire should play LCB tonight because he has played there before, and because I don't see a better alternative. You can say its easier with England etc… but that doesn't help us with Martinez and Shaw both out. We need to play someone there and I don't see an option better than maguire.

Well that would be the logical thing to do but this is Manchester United we're talking about.

IIRC he didn't participate in similar at Bayern either.

Can't believe it's not on regular telly, used to be one of the games of the season.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,338 ✭✭✭The Rooster

Arsenal v ManU is on Premier Sports1

I don’t know what it’s like to be gay or to be Muslim but I struggle to understand why anyone, no matter their religious belief refuses to wear rainbow colours this week. Not understanding, and maybe deliberately not understanding the concept.

As LiamO said, comparing it to the poppy is completely wrong. They are totally different concepts.

It's a marketing gimmick to sell more merch, nothing more, nothing less. You can support gay people and not want to wear those rainbow tops, armbands, etc because they represent a political opinion that not everyone agrees with.

Anyhow, Crafton should be immediately banned by the club from Utd pressers for leaking this stuff. This is the level of nonsense managers and players had to deal with for far too long now.

"Well, yeah, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,356 ✭✭✭IncognitoMan

No De Ligt I would see the same, needs to be the CCB.

On who should play there tonight? Yoro is in the squad but yeah options are limited.
I'm not 100% if throwing him in here is the right call or not

Don't want to crucify the young lad but he has come in highly rated and we need to start seeing what he can do.
Providing he himself is 100% fit

I just have very little interest in seeing Maguire running back towards his own goal struggling to keep up with Saka

I don't think it is. It's not something that applies to me but if you look at the reaction to the Jordan Henderson transfer it's clearly important to fan groups and people have been personally touched by the actions of the players who have made even token gestures to their rights.

Fair enough Mazraoui doesn't want to but in a lot of other employments you refusing to do something that does not align with the companies values would be a problem. Obviously sport is different as it's physical competition but still disappointing as if it's just to sell merch, nothing more as you say then it's just a meaningless piece of cloth?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48,944 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

Don't get me wrong, its not something I am desperate for, I just don't see that we have a choice.

I think long terms the likely plan is that Yoro and Mazraoui will share time at RCB, with Mazraoui possibly playing wing back too.

But I also think we could see Yoro RCB and Mazraoui as LCB.

I just don't think tonight we will start Yoro without a previous minute of game time in the last 4 months, so our options for the back 3 tonight are (i think) Mazraoui, De Ligt, Maguire, Evans - with Martinez, Shaw, Lindelof all out and Yoro (imo) highly unlikely to start.

from the 4 I reckon are possible, I think Maguire is above Evans, and then I'd play him LCB before I would play De Ligt there. Plus on that side i think we will have Dalot, which would hopefully help while at RCB they'd have Amad ahead of them which will make defending a bit harder.

I do wonder if we would play Mazraoui on the left side though, to double up with Dalot vs Saka. But then the ball progression on the right will suffer.

    No easy/good call imo.
