Snap Bernard did very similar for our family raising Dail questions and follow-up enquiries, Catherine was similarly involved and was active on local issues for us too. Naosie plays a great PR game but has too many broken promises and blames everyone from the council to central government for them then takes credit for stuff that's a done deal like Dart+ and Bus Connects when he can't manage to get the council to fix a few street lights or trim back trees! I feel for Angela as she does seem genuine and responsive. It will be an interesting few years to see what if anything he delivers on for Maynooth. He guaranteed if elected further work on Ring Road would start in February on the doors so that's the first promise I expect to slip!

Well to be completely honest - Not one person seeking election knocked at our door for the entire campaign. I was itching to pull a few of them up on promises and issues. In the end I gave my No1 to Aidan Farrelly followed by Durkan, Independents and FF , FG and SF last on the ballot.

You've reminded me that Cronin replied to a months/maybe a year old email just before the 2019 Locals. She has form for digging through the email backlog!

TBF, she hardly had time to reply to emails back then, what with her averaging more than 40 tweets a day for nearly 8 years….

and she was told by head office to stay away from social media after posting some opinions that didnt match SF official policy - maybe she misunderstood and thought she had to stay away from all keyboards.

Sad to see Durkan not getting in but times have to move on I suppose. New energy and that. Durkan was alway one who you could rely on to raise Dail questions on your behalf.

Catherine Murphy is like Naioses granny. A great talker but that's it. Lived off a reputation for a long time as some sort of community activist. I have had negative experiences with herself and her office not responding to emails over the last few years. No loss at this stage.

It's good to have a Sinn Fein rep in. It might keep the other lot some what on their toes.

Considering this is basically the Maynooth chat thread - anyone using Allied for their bins?

Thorntons are now looking for ~290 off me which is obscene, Allied would be 210 (very very low black bin usage). Panda are 252 and a bit more of a known entity. AES/BNM are off the cards twice - they want 300, and I won't use anyway them after appalling experiences before.

Greyhound called to my door this week, saying they are coming to area. Timed it perfectly for Thorntons price increase email.

I'm tempted by their price, but no no-one using them yet. And their calendar section isn't working

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,888 ✭✭✭donspeekinglesh

Got the Thorntons renewal notice a few hours a go - they want €347.88. Crazy money - that's €28.99 a month!

It'd be nice to know when Greyhound do their collections etc, as their €22.50 a month (plus 3 months free) is a big saving.

I suspect, from past experience of Thorntons, that when you phone them to FO they'll cut the price.

I'm done with playing those games these days though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,518 ✭✭✭Patser

Yeah I've filled in the Greyhound call me back option - 19:50 for 9 months - so a guaranteed less the €180 a year service compared to Thornstons €105 service charge before they even collect a thing… then price increases on all collections as well, gotta try it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 609 ✭✭✭jethrothe2nd

Same experience for us. A phone call is usually enough to get the price cut with Thorntons.

While the constant shopping around for service providers (not just bins) is necessary I'm becoming increasingly fed up with it. Energy suppliers are among the worst to navigate, and I get particularly annoyed with the ones that send people round to knock on doors. I had 3 different ones calling to the door over the last number of weeks. Each of them swore blindly that they were offering the best deal on the market and I wouldn't get any cheaper. This despite me telling them from the off I was currently in a contract and don't sign up to anything at the door. Bah humbug

    Call back from Greyhound.

Thursday collections for black and green - rotating. Brown on Friday of black - so copy paste of Thorntons calendar.

    I'm going to jump.

Same as Jethro above, tired of the constant haggling with everyone but figure the more people that jump around rather than blindly pay increases, then the more competitive they have to get and less likely to shift existing customers.…and I've blindly believed that for past 15 years and still waiting

Thorntons have, in the past few years

    • Picked a skip up on a Bank Holiday Monday morning despite my confirmation email saying Tuesday - what skip firm works BH Mondays? Went to Dollys/Wilton for my many skips since (full house refurb), cheaper and keep it as long as you need
    • Tried to claim my bin weights were 100% accurate, the truck never lies when many weeks had the same nonsense number (someting 6.5656565656kg) and another one would have been higher density than if the bin was filled to the top with water (>240kg)
    • Put me on to a higher cost band due to said nonsense figures, then said they'd put me back down as a "gesture of goodwill" rather than admit their weights were made up

AES gave me more nonsense in a shorter time, but come to think of it, I've wasted days of my life chasing Thorntons. And I'm old enough to remember the various waste court cases - lack of digital archives for the Champion mean I can't find full details but there was some heavy stuff going on.

Allied do Monday collection for Maynooth. We're considered Leixlip on their charts.

I'd still be concerned about being the only customer on a run.

Has anyone here stopped using Thorntons? I was considering cancelling before but was told there was, I think, a charge to collect the bins that essentially, if paid, would negate the saving I would make by moving. Do they try to follow up on this? I am sure it can be avoided but it does seem to be in the terms.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 72,824 ✭✭✭✭L1011

Good luck to them enforcing that against someone who pays by credit card for a year. There were no T&Cs when I signed up in 2012, so they can't enforce new ones against me anyway.

Allied don't have a charge mentioned in their T&Cs. Greyhound say they'll charge you if you don't give them back but nothing about paying to leave.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35 cgorzy

I’m not with Thorntons as long as you and I have no idea at this stage what terms I signed up on. Agreed I can’t see it being enforced but for anyone changing and with a direct debit set up be sure it is stopped.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 72,824 ✭✭✭✭L1011

Its on the website for a few years now; but only a few as far as the web archive suggests.

I can confirm that Thorntons matched the Allied price and in a moment of pre-lunch hunger induced madness I said yes rather than telling them I wasn't happy with them playing games.

I left thornthon and paid just to get rid the bin in the end was with them since 2007 They were pretty snotty with me on the call about it too. I had a door to door guy try to get me to resign up recently :) not a hope of going back to them. I'm with bord na mona and have no issue with them

Thread from sometime ago on it.

I email CCPC to see if they could offer any help, I could of when the DECC route but didn't bother in the end.

Thank you for your email to the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) in relation to your issue with Thornton’s recycling,We apologise for the delay in responding to your query.

Please note, the role of the CCPC is to provide impartial information on consumer rights and personal finance matters that empowers consumers to take action for themselves. We do not hold an Ombudsman role and cannot initiate investigations at the request of consumers.

For your general information, when a consumer enters a contract for services, such as Waste management services, there is an onus on the consumer to review all of the terms and conditions of the provider. In particular, where a consumer is cancelling a contract, the consumer will need to adhere to any cancellation provisions of the contract. These terms and conditions are set at the company's own discretion, and may include a condition that it is a rolling contract (which means that the contract may ‘roll over’ for a further 12 month term unless cancelled by the consumer) they may also include, notice periods or cancellations fees and if a consumer agrees to a service or contract without being aware of the conditions, they are still bound by them.

Further information on contracts can be found through the below link on our website:

In the first instance, if you have not already done so, we would suggest that you review the full terms and conditions of your contract. Where you feel that Thornton’s recyclingare acting outside of the terms agreed regarding the cancellation fee, we would suggest that you make a formal complaint in writing outlining the issue and how you would like the matter to be resolved.

More information on submitting an effective complaint can be found through the following link:

    https://www.ccpc.ie/consumers/how-to-complain/complain-to-a-business/

Where you are unable to resolve your issue directly with Thornton’s recycling and you feel you are at a financial loss, a final option that may be available to you is the Small Claims Procedure (SCP). The SCP is designed to deal with consumer claims up to €2,000 and the current fee for making a claim through the Small Claims Procedure is €25.

You may also wish to raise your concerns to the Department for Communications, Climate Action & Environment (DCCAE) as they are responsible for legislation around the waste sector in Ireland.

Finally, where you are pursued by the company for payment and you are unable to resolve the matter, you may need to seek independent legal advice.

We hope you have found this information useful and if you have any further consumer related queries, please do not hesitate to contact us on (01) 4025555.

The latest with energy company renewals is that they seem to let you cancel before offering the genuine discounts.Jesus wept! Anyway I left BG and we got a great deal with Thorntons …several months of free bins and even more on signing up via them with SSE for energy .Prices there just ok , but more for gas and a bit less for elec

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,518 ✭✭✭Patser

Yeah, I'm now going through this exact thing.

Thorntons very unhappy I left without them having chance to offer price match, and want €45 just to take away bins - even though Greyhound have a 'Take away my Bins' section to remove the rival's bin.

    https://greyhound.ie/digital-take-back-my-bin-form-page/

Waiting to hear from Greyhound and at moment Thornton account is v low on money - so unsure how they can get me to pay.

Is there anything currently planned for the old motor factors?

Was thinking it could be a good spot for a bike sales/service shop.

Something I feel that the town is seriously lacking, with so much potential demand. Any time I want anything done to my bike I have to traipse to the guy in Kilcock

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,567 ✭✭✭✭Electric Nitwit

Cafe planned, apparently Baa Baa Cafe from Chapelizod opening another

Edit: why did the bike shop in Newtown close? Was it lack of demand? (I agree with you, would love a bike shop. You'd even wonder if one could hire bikes once the Greenway is finished in both directions)

Bike shops never seem to last anywhere, not just locally but nationally - you get exceptions like Stagg in Lucan who are there decades but otherwise 5 years is about the lifespan.

I can remember three different bike shops in Maynooth in the last ~25 years, all gone.

Motor factors unit is far too big for one really anyway.

Maynooth is getting overrun with cafes at this stage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,518 ✭✭✭Patser

    Update on bin saga.

Thorntons added €45 bin collection fee to me account and won't close till paid.

Greyhound saying don't need to pay, they are obliged to collect bins and that by filling in their collection form, that everything is following protocol.

Bike shop at Newtown always seemed busy when I was in there or even passing by.

    Maybe it was increasing rent.
