Disappointed with the performance. We showed a much improved ability to keep possession tho - but did little with it in the back line. I think the Aussie defence deserves a lot of credit, really nullified out attack and smothered chances. They conceded ground but very little line breaks. The lineout was much improved from an awful start of the series, but killed so many hard fought for positions. I an hopeful we are going to improve a lot in performance against England, otherwise it could be a mauling.

I’d say it will be same old same old for the 6n. I’d also say that a good few international careers will finish with the Lions tour. The young squad Easterby will take for the summer series will allow for the young bucks to play their way into the squad. Aki will finish with the lions tour and Hendy POM, Healy and others will also finish at the end of the season

I have a theory & I could be miles off but I'll throw it out there.

One of the 1st indo podcasts with Joe Molloy was with Paul o Connell.

The question was asked regarding how coaches speak to players and& was the the day of shouting & bollocking & calling a guy out is over & it's more a softly arm around the shoulder approach

O connell paused & said its much more the latter nowadays but some need the tougher approach.

We've heard previously Farrell is a great man manager.

Maybe the approach with Crowley re media duties & benching him today was to observe his reaction both on/off the pitch.

A test basically & maybe that's what he needed, perhaps Farrell thinks there is more in him & thus lighting a fire under him

Am I in tinfoil hat territory??😁

Ireland seem a team in decline, or at least a team a bit behind the rebuild of other teams.

Losing Farrell and the Lions tour will make things interesting for the national team over the next year.

Name one other player he has treated like that since he got the job.

Your missing my point maybe it's the right approach for him...we are not privy to attitudes in camp obviously.

This is a really irrational thing to be bothered by but can we say 'Gibson-Park' or 'JGP'? His name isn't Park.

Horses for courses but in general with Leinsters pack dominance this season I'd let him at it in most cases.

Remember it was Farrell who saw the promise in JgP & then backed Frawley at test level 10

I am not missing your point , i am just saying Farrell has followed this approach on no other player. I could accept you have a point if there was a history of Farrell doing this.

My theory is that everything was fine with Crowley and Farrell until Johnny sexton joined the management team and has got into the ear of Farrell, sexton has such an ego he believes Ireland can only be successful if they play sexton rugby - a 10 who is the alpha and calls all the plays and even has a say in how the team is selected.
There is no doubt he had a say on Pendergast getting the nod.
    Sexton has to go immediately.

I think it worked. Crowley looked like he was on a whole different level when he came on.

    first I heard of it.
I can’t remember Farrell dropping any of them while they were first Choice and playing well for a complete newbie and then publicly humiliated them.

interesting take by JS on the two out halves…

“I think young Sam – I’d still be a good friend with Richie Murphy – Richie was talking about him two years ago as a real talent so it was no surprise to me,” said Schmidt. “He’s got a great short-kicking game, but his long-kicking game was exceptional tonight. I thought a couple of times they got penalties and he put us deep into our 22. Yeah, when that is happening it’s pretty difficult because there’s not a lot of Oxygen out there.

“I think we did isolate him a few times tonight, we put some pressure on him and he did look a little flustered which is unusual for the young man that he is he is usually very, very calm. He’s got great potential.

“I got to say, I’d be a fan of Jack Crowley as well. I think Jack is a super player and a very brave one. He is a very good defender.”

my theory might upset some but. I think I am on the right track.

Lot of absolute scutter being written about the 2

10s. I think they're both at about the same level. Crowley is more of a running threat, but Prendergast looks better at organizing an attacking shape.

We've been struggling mainly due to our forwards not getting successful carries across the gainline. Defenses are able to keep their shape more effectively and we're not seeing the gaps for cut back runners that were there previously. The aggression that saw us batter NZ and France for example, hasn't been there at all this Autumn.

Yeah fair enough. I didn't mean anything by it but will use his proper surname in future

aw come on, you cant dispute what we’ve seen with our own eyes, sp wasn’t ready to carry the game today , Crowley showed everything required for an international 10 in only 15 mins on the pitch.

Great to see POM have a great game , there’s life in the old dog yet

Nonsense. Prendergast put in a fine display. Crowley and Casey came on and played well, which is what you what your bench to do. They were also benefiting from playing against tired opposition. Prendergast put us position to score, and players knocked on or lineouts were lost. The whole team has been off this month, true today as it was when Crowley was starting vs NZ. It's a team issue, nothing to do with the 10s in particular.

Disappointing to see some of the comments on here about SP. He’s a 21 year old who’s started against a tier one team in a game we won and given a very good account of himself. Was he perfect? No, but he’s shown that he’s more than capable of mixing it at this level. The same sentiment applies to some of the comments about Crowley earlier this window who hasn’t been at his best this season in red or green but had a great cameo when he came on today helping to change the momentum and seeing the game home.

I reckon Farrell will be delighted with the two of them and the character they’ve shown this autumn, Crowley playing himself into form and showing exactly the reaction he would have wanted to see from him after Prendergast got picked for today and Prendergast’s ability to step up to this level and rebound well from mistakes made during the games (the YC last week and dead kick and the penalty he slotted after a poor conversion attempt today).

The future looks bright at 10 for Ireland. Now for the easy bit-sorting out our rucks, accuracy with ball in hand and the lineout.

    Crowley

We were leading v The All Blacks when he was subbed off, we lost

We were leading v Argentina when he was subbed off, we won

We were losing v Australia when he was subbed on, we won

I wonder what Andrew Goodman thinks about sexton coming in. The chap hired to be the backs coach having his authority undermined at 10.
The other coaches and the senior players who were delighted to move on from sextons ego must have been going wtf.

I said on here when it was announced sexton was joining up that it was a terrible idea and it is and the performances this autumn prove my point.
the way the players have carried themselves bar a brutal Fiji team has been very low energy. Probably raging sexton Is involved.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,606 ✭✭✭techdiver

I'm amused. Forever we call for young players to be developed and build a squad. Then we select a young player to do that very thing and people complain that he's not the finished article.

Christ, what short memories everyone has. Sexton was not the world class player he became at the start, but our biggest failing was putting all our eggs in a single basket. Crowley is clearly first choice, but what happens if he's injured? Take a step back people and realise that we have actually tried to blood young talent (like we were told we never do and that the likes of France do) and still won the game.

Our issues go deeper than 10 at the moment but SP has been exposed to a better level opposition than just a token Fiji cap.

Crowley is clearly first choice except that he was dropped for Prendergast when he is nowhere near ready

fair point if there was more young players and not just Prendergast being developed against nz argies and aus. For example If Casey, gus McCarthy and both prendergasts started today then fair enough
that’s where your point falls down.

Yes, absolutely. He should have been starting from the beginning of the season.

now you’re just using sentimentality as a defence for SP.

The pack have been well tossed around in all the games bar Fiji , and that gives a poor platform to any back line. SP was well marshaled by Oz and needed to vary his game more than he did. Some nice kicks aside(bar the missed conversion), he never challenging the OZ 10, 12, 13 after 15 mins.

Games against top tier opposition require a 10 who can adjust to the oppostion and vary the game in real time . SP should be played at 10 for leinster in order to hone this skill., he was well able to do it in the U20s , so no reason he cant do it at senior level.

It’s over to Leo to develop him at 10 for ireland until the 6N.

PS where does Frawley go from here ? He not gong to be starting for leinster and Ireland any time soon. His bench spot will be under pressure with Barrett on board .

I hope he does. I’d reckon most Leinster fans would too. I’m sure a few would go for Frawley or Ross Byrne but in fairness they’re all good options who have been capped by Ireland.
