Maybe because Nissan arent making cars that anyone with taste (and money) want. Look at this lineup and tell me you'd rather not walk than be seen in these.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,427 ✭✭✭Mad_Lad

The same could be said for most cars these days, I'm no fan of crossovers or SUV I hate them they're really ugly, in my opinion and they're just too big for our roads and parking spaces.

Most cars now are not even good to drive nor offer a good driving experience to those who like driving, car manufacturers now cater seemingly only for those who prefer an appliance like experience where more in car tech and entertainment are seeming the most important thing in a car.

One reason I love motorcycles, and I really love it, one really important thing is they make what they call modern classics or retros that are almost identical to bikes that are 40-50+ years old and they're selling like hotcakes because they offer a good riding experience, engines and exhausts that sound good too and I think, hmmm, if there's such a market for modern retro motorcycles then why do car manufacturers not follow suit ?

Honda had gone the ultra modern high tech for years and have recently brought out a modern classic bike due to strong sales in the segment.

VW are in a bit of a bother too.

    https://www.theguardian.com/business/article/2024/sep/04/volkswagen-has-a-year-maybe-two-to-turn-around-financial-chief-warns

    There's various sources for this.

It's probably not a good idea having a Green politician who doesn't own a car sitting on the Supervisory Board of VW ? lol 😂

Is the Micra completely gone in Ireland now? And Europe probably too...

Micra will be a renault 5 with different skin. Leaf has been photographed around europe charging at ccs stations and based on renault megane platform. Ariya is not a bad car but they priced it too high to begin with and is forgotten…too late in lifecycle to save it now.

Nissan in US has terrible reputation for self-destruct CVT transmissions.

That's news to me ? what a shame.

Manufacturers are making huge money selling cars that sit a few mm taller on larger wheels with bulky body kits to make them look bigger but they're still hatchback size inside.

Some of the cars are just ridiculously big to drive the kids to school so Mammy can show off debt. I need the space they say, yeah get an estate, more room or a proper 7 seater.

I'd put a super tax on all these big crossover/SUV especially when they go over a certain weight. say 1500 Kg.

They are not that bad now. The Juke is funky, the Qushqui has a bit of style and they are reliable but ye they never going to have class or real desirability because that are Nissan after all but if they were at the right price and I am in the market for new or 2nd hand I would consider one.

    Nissan's ridiculous "E-Power" concept probably hasn't helped?

Petrol engine → Charging tiny battery → Electric Motor.

You cannot drive any distance on Electric power alone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,039 ✭✭✭User1998

Same can be said for Toyota and their self charging hybrids?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 726 ✭✭✭kaahooters

yes you can, i had a rental xtrail epower lastweek, did 400k on 20ish liters.

look, the issue is, and this is industry wide, china is selling better cars, for less money, and all the "big" maufactures are loosing market to the likes of byd.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,427 ✭✭✭Mad_Lad

Chinese market is massive and without the absolutely massive Government incentives cars wouldn't be so cheap there and remember all the tax we pay here is ridiculous, the Government are adding probably 20k in tax or more to new cars and one reason I'll never again buy a new car, it's a huge waste of money.

Chinese cars sold here aren't cheap either.

What the market needs is cheap cars not big heavy SUV which I'd fully support a super tax on the car companies who produce them but if I were in Government I'd just ban their sale or charge 2K a year for Motor tax for anything over 1500 Kg and anything over 1.8 meters wide.

There's strong evidence for vast amounts of fields full of all sorts of unsold cars due to the Government incentives it was cheaper to build cars and dump them. Do we really want to support the Chinese ? I certainly don't more than I do.

Byd doing well here . MG sales have nose dived and Tesla not doing so well

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,427 ✭✭✭Mad_Lad

Still expensive in reality like all cars due to the sheer level of tax, it's disgusting.

I was in New York in October and saw on a billboard adds for new cars advertising just 3 % tax lol

Petrol around 67 cent a Litre too and they think it's too high. This country is a joke. Just tax people to hell and squander it rather than spend it better and tax us less.

No way Tax payer money should be going on grants for cars, solar etc.

Carbon tax costing people 15c per litre of petrol, 54.18 cent Excise, 32.43 cent VAT, 1.90 Cent NORA, 1.2 Cent for Better Energy. (whatever better energy is )

Total tax on petrol is €1.40 and 93.34c on Diesel

The car owner in Ireland has always been an easy cash cow for the Irish Government and probably the sole reason public transport is absolute ****, where's the incentive to have a private company come in build an underground system in Dublin for example and charge money for it, it would be like the toll bridge and the Government would loose a lot of money they'd tell us has to be replaced probably with higher income taxes but if the Government didn't waste so much money in the first place we wouldn't need to be taxed so high. + with all the extra money from the corporations they still screw the working Man.

Motorbikes have nowhere near the amount of regs dictating how cars are designed or powered. It also costs literally orders of magnitude less to develop a new bike than to develop a new car.

A brand new Honda CB125F is only 4k, plus €250 for VRT. You'd be lucky to get a 20-year-old 3-series that's an abandoned project car for that money. If you're a car enthusiast who wants something brand new (and not imported) your cheapest option is the MX-5, which starts at just over €46k. Even if we had US levels of car taxes I can't imagine it being less than €30k here.

They need someone like this legendary figure…….

    Nissan Main Dealer.

    I'll get my coat.

Yeah a CBF125 new is cheaper than a CUB 125 lol. I've seen C90s go for over 4K lol, pure mental !

The CBF125 is known to do over 80 imp Mpg too , that's 3.5L/100 kms and even better once the engine is ran in.

Of course bikes cost a lot less to develop they are a lot less vehicle to begin with. But I get what you're saying , to make a modern classic car would cost a lot but any new car as you said costs a lot to develop.

There are huge benefits if People only saw the value of having bikes for 1-2 person transport like they do in many European and Asian countries, cheap to buy, cheap to fuel, free to park, can filter through traffic and in my opinion, Bus lanes should be officially open to Motorcyclists.

ireland dosent want cheap cars, look at all the 10year old bmw about. thers vast fielsd of unsold cars from vw, ford and nissan in the uk, this is a thing, its not just chineese evs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,427 ✭✭✭Mad_Lad

"thers vast fielsd of unsold cars from vw, ford and nissan in the uk"

That's true but in China it's on an entirely different scale.

There's plenty of people that want cheap cars, BMW are not designed to be cheap cars.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 726 ✭✭✭kaahooters

its a diffrecn scale as theres 1.2 billion people in china and 500million in europe, cars per person unsold is far greater in europe then china.

And noone wants cheap cars, the top 5 selling cars this year

     HYUNDAI TUCSON (39k)(, 2. SKODA OCTAVIA(31k), 3. KIA SPORTAGE(39k),  4. TOYOTA RAV 4(44k), 5. TOYOTA YARIS CROSS(31k)

if people wanted cheap used cars, people would be buying cheaper new cars

    nope,

look at any of the car sales sites, lets look at carzone, for example.

using 2017 onwards, cos why not.

so, numbers of cars for sale, by brand.

    bmw 2825 (5s 820, 3s 513)

Audi 2173 ( a3 633) im supprised by that too, i dont see a lot of them about.

    dacia 966 (duster 386)

    merc 2029 (eclass 427)

    toyota 2300 (corola 612)

vw 4300 (polol 633) supprised by that, cant remember the last time i saw a polo.

    hyundai 2536 (tuscon 1056)

    kia 1960 (sportage)

going whats live and fors sale atm, people arent looking for small cheap runarounds anymore, there looking for bigger cars, which cost more. go have a look at teh numbers for sale and then youll see what the markets looking for.

Ireland is a tiny market. Have a look at MG in the UK!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,921 ✭✭✭✭MetzgerMeister

I often think that if it weren't for the UK being such a big market, we'd be driving on the opposite side of the road.

The Government were really clever putting the year on the reg then the 1 and 2 for January/July etc. Irish People like to keep up with the Joneses.

The SUV craze now too, can't be seen in a hatch lol

PCP is the " Real Never Never " people fooled by cheap monthly payments and forgetting about the inevitable big balloon payment or the forever Never Never to avoid it. The spending on cars in Ireland given the average industrial wage is absolutely insane especially considering the cost of new cars today.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 726 ✭✭✭kaahooters

the pcp model is very clever, "sure its just 300 a month, i make 3k a month, thats nothing" chipping away with out actually relising its 10k deposit + 12k in payments + 20k final payment for a 25k car, but it keeps sales up for the retail market in irealand, cos we dont have a motor industry, we have a motor sales market ( its just shops).

weve a weird narative with cars here tbh.

But back on pont, Nissan, didnt they have massive sales with there little kei car released lastyear?

Yeah PCP is not explained properly to many people and I managed to talk a friend of mine out of it last week funny enough, he didn't really understand all the numbers the dealer was throwing at him. So instead of buying new he might going buy a 2 or 3 year old instead but not new now. I told him don't be fooled with the low monthly payments , if a car costs 40 K it costs 40K + interest and no matter how the numbers are fiddled it's still 40k + interest and told him to go online and look up how much his bank would charge him for HP to own the car over 3 years or 5 years and see the actual money he's have to pay, over 5 years the interest would be a lot more money, then I explained that in order to get out of PCP you either have to hand the car back or pay a big balloon, on HP you own the car after the last payment.

    What's the "kei " ?
