Yesterday, for the first time ever, live streaming of TV was poor. Movies would freeze every now and again for up to 20 seconds at a time, same with the late late last night. I put it down to increased demand on NYE.

Anyway panic over, I've a happy 2 year old watching Peppa pig this morning.

    Overall it's a great service.

I've found it needs some form a reboot about every 3 months. Perfectly acceptable. To date it's been rock solid. Near a year in. NBP coming this year though and will switch but going to keep the contract dormant and unit installed where it is as backup.

Mine seems to reboot after it gets updates (middle of the night usually), so I've not needed to reboot it manually in the longest time.

Digiweb-NBI is coming to me next month, but I will be leaving the Starlink gear in place too (but account dormant), for backup purposes.

How quick is it to activate an account? If you are just using it for backup purposes.. can you activate in a minute or two and cancel say the next day or do you have to set up for month?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,171 ✭✭✭ItHurtsWhenIP

I will check, but I have a memory that when I got it set-up years ago, they would activate fairly quickly and yes, it would be for a month's service.

I've checked and it seems likely that it would be quick and easy to reactivate the service … as long as there is capacity in the area. I doubt that Starlink is in any way over-subscribed in Ireland.

    How do I reactivate service?

    1. Log into your account on starlink.com
    2. Under "Your Starlinks", click "Manage"
    3. Click "Activate Service"
    4. Select your service plan

To activate your service, you have the option of picking your previous plan or choosing a new one. Note: some plans might not be available.

    Limitations of reactivation:

    • Availability - The ability to reactivate Standard and Priority service is dependent on capacity in the area. You can view Starlink's service availability map on starlink.com/map. If there is no capacity in the area, there will be the option to reactivate with a Mobile type service plan.
    • Unauthorized retailer/reseller - We are unable to activate service for a Starlink that has been purchased from an unauthorized retailer or reseller.
    • Country moves - We do not support Starlink reactivation in a different country at this time. To use Starlink in a different country, you must create an account in the desired country.

Cancelling is, as I expected, after a month's service.

    Cancel Service:

You can cancel your service at any time by following these steps:

    1. Log into your Starlink Account
    2. In the 'YOUR STARLINKS' section, Click 'Manage', next to the Starlink you wish to cancel service for.
    3. Click 'Cancel Service'.

Your service will remain active up until the date paid for, and will be removed from future billing cycles.

Please note, by canceling service, you may not be able to reactivate immediately. Reactivation is dependent on service availability and capacity in your area.

I've about 20cm of snow here (so far), but Dishy is nice and clear …

Today is the first time I needed to enable "heating" on the dish as I was losing signal, had it disabled up until now. No issues since.

Just got starlink. Great speeds, all going well. I did notice a good few very short outages last night. Is this normal?

Occasionally get that many but checking now just 3 less than .1ms in the last 12 hours.

What does the "Obstructions" map look like?

Thanks, that did the trick. Seamless streaming ever since.

Just keep an eye on it. I have had days like that but its been so trouble free for the last 6 months I hardly bother to check anymore.

Just a thought with the current weather warnings, anyone worried about their Dishy? Mines not in a great location on its original stand held down with sandbags. Been fine for the last year and other storms.

yeah mine is in direct line of fire. Hoping for the best at this stage.

If I'm up that late (sometimes I am) I might keep an eye on the stats and see if any gusts affect the connection? If my Dishy does get blown over its not got too far to fall.

I just noticed you can buy starlink in Curry's l. Has anyone done this? Is it the exact same as buying it from starlink?? The dish looks different the one starlink sell directly. Big advantage is you can walk in store and come out with it. Plus the router has an ethernet port so no need for adaptor. I'm looking at getting it as back up to fibre because that seems to go off on every storm.

I can think of no advantage of buying anything in Curry's!

I think that's the latest version of the dish. It doesn't auto align like gen 2? Not sure how hard it's to place. Ours was fine during the wind..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,221 ✭✭✭The Continental Op

    Placing? Setup?

Step through the Starlink install process on the Starlink App. Once connected, an alert on the App will show if you need to rotate Starlink to be properly aligned. Click the alert to use the alignment tool.

    From set up guide https://api.starlink.com/public-files/installation_guide_standard_kit.pdf

Don't like the kickstand? No good for me as I have my gen 2 on a flat roof with a couple of sandbags on the base. Can't do that out the box with a gen 3.

Setup with the sandbags ours didn't move in the storm.

Buying in Currys is faster. And currently €40 off in a sale.

When ordering from Starlink you also set up your account so dish is ready to go.

With Currys dish you need to set up your account and payment when dish is turned on.

I bought one from Currys after hurricane Beryl and shipped it to the Caribbean. I am pretty sure, as @micks_address said, it is the latest version. In terms of setup, the recipients were older and not what I would describe as tech savvy and they had it up and running with no issues.

The appeal of buying from Currys was, as you say, the convenience.
