Yeah, he should have ruined his media propaganda reputation like Simon Harris, walking away from a care worker after talking to them like she was a criminal.

Figures this year on immigration into Ireland:

    40,000 Ukrainians

    33,000 work permits issued

    30,000 EU/UK

    16,000 illegals

    19,000 Student visas

Political parties on RTE1 now.. first question from an immigrant on a student visa asking why the Irish Govt. is encouraging so many people to come here when there's a total lack of housing, and a lack of Services…

Shame he didn’t follow the footsteps of your mate ROG, the unlikeable idiot that has overseen an unmitigated disaster in the areas of his remit and has f’ed up his reputation with his ineptitude

If he manages to get re-elected it’ll only be through the dumb luck of his constituency gaining an additional seat

it’s immediately obvious they aren’t going to discuss asylum seekers, it’s focused on workers arriving on work visas

"We need workers" says McEntee as FG preside over tens of thousands of emigrating Irish citizens in the education and health sectors because they won't pay them properly.

It's clear you don't appreciate my attempt at humour either and that's fair enough.

But anytime I've seen that poster mentioned it's got laughs, regardless of whether left or right.

I guess not everything is a culture wars issue.

We need to keep workers wages low in order to prevent Ireland becoming a high-wage hell hole like Switzerland.

If what you are on about is on RTE its pretty obvious they aren't going to discuss anything whatsoever

First time I ever heard Switzerland referred to as a "Hell hole!" :-D

    FFS

Rodders - "Today, we are making a new commitment to all those seeking refuge in Ireland. We will end direct provision. Read our plan here.”

    Article - https://archive.is/EfdEL

No one knows what Roderic O’Gorman, the integration minister, was thinking when he began tweeting about his plans to reform the immigration system in early 2021 but staff at the International Protection Office (IPO) were aghast.

…but staff at the International Protection Office (IPO) were aghast.

Why would the staff at the IPO be aghast? - Could it be that they knew this would not end well…as we are seeing

If anyone has a problem with the article and its contents/sources, I suggest contacting the publication in question and taking it up with them - I'm happy enough to take this papers credibility/reliability at face value

Of course the other aspect to bear in mind with regards to the cost of IPA accommodation is that it's highly unlikely this money would otherwise end up to back in the taxpayers coffers.

Suppose every person seeking asylum vanished in a puff of smoke in the morning. Who would fill their jobs?

Everything else remaining as is, we'd simply end up with more hiring from abroad, leading to more pressure on housing, therefore more homelessness, and then more spending on emergency accommodation.

Even a 12 year old would be able to distinguish that trained health care professionals are going to be more useful than Deliveroo riders.

I think Helen really believes that both workers are equally important to the country 🤡

The neck of McEntee saying 'it's really important to debate these issues' regarding the use of hotels. Why wasn't it important when they were contracting the hotels in the first place? It's only important now because it is an election is it? They might send an email to notify communities 96 hours in advance instead of 48 if they get re-elected. Herself and O'Gorman couldn't run a bath.

He gets no mainstream attention. It's not in their interests to promote him. He done unbelievable work in the bike shed and other controversies.

Daa came out and said it was a group of contract workers from Slovakia who are coming here to work in Turkey farms for Christmas and the buses were organised by the employer/agency.

There are plenty of other candidates who were elected with no media profile. His policies clearly do not resonate with the electorate.

I read DP was to be abolished and replaced with own door accommodation after 4 months.

Now there is own tent accommodation and an expansion of DP .!!

You forgot to mention the cost of modular homes to house Ukrainians and refugees rising from 165000 to 422000 and with a lifespan of 60 years at most !!

I was not aware asylum seekers were trained workers unless the government now needs unskilled workers ,deliveroo ,and taxi drivers .

But but they all Doctors and Engineers.

Maybe a few tweets should be sent out to criminals to locate their crime sprees in these districts. More profitable for them

So aghast were these particular staff they waited nearly two years, until after the story had become a far-right talking point, before speaking to this journalist for his watered down opinion piece.

In fairness to the journalist he does offer some interesting opinions on the increase of people seeking asylum in Ireland at the time, but failing to mention Covid or Ireland's history of higher numbers makes his piece look a bit silly overall imho.

I don't know what that's supposed to mean about Doctors and Deliveroo drivers.

But we hire both highly skilled and lower skilled workers from abroad.

I think it's extremely likely that money spent on IPA accommodation would end up spent on emergency accommodation for other groups should they stop arriving.

how would they know the number for “illegals”

    Much confused

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,982 ✭✭✭enricoh

Denmark introduced policies which lead to a 90% iirc reduction in asylum seekers. Where do you think the money they are saving went? Did it vanish!

Who would fill their jobs- is this comedy hour. Virtually no countries in Europe want asylum seekers any more as their are such a drain on resources.

Deliveroo- we can no longer get staff since your crackdown on asylum seekers we'd like 5000 work permits.

Government - get f@#ked. The end.

In Denmark's case I'd think a lot of it went towards implementation of their policies and dealing with the consequences. For a start don't we hear a lot about all the gang-violence linked to migrants in Denmark and other Nordic countries?

Even if it were the case that as many asylum seeking people were working as Deliveroo drivers as you and other posters seem to believe, I don't think your proposals are as straightforward as you think.

What would happen if Deliveroo simply increased it's prices to lure people away from other more essential work? Those jobs would still have to be filled by permit holders.

Like it or not (and it seems to upset some people very much) there does seem to be quite a high uptake of employment amongst asylum seeking people in Ireland, so any demands they put on services or emergency accommodation would still have to be met.
