I know who I'm voting for so haven't really bothered with any of the debates, but it does seem very lackluster In fairness. Maybe it's the time of year or the lack of any serious opposition.

So you think socially housing EU citizens who have never worked here is good for the economy?

Also, housing bogus international protection people who in a lot of cases will never be able to gain employment that supports them independently, is also good for the economy?

Most tax payers whether they were born here or immigrants would echo the same. Because as tax payers we all face the same challenges.

An island population that can grow sustainably in line with economic and social cohesion is what we should be aiming for.

Our political system which is infiltrated by special interest groups which benefits a few or a collection of bonkers ideology driven joke shops who never engaged in productive toil will not deliver the above.

Aontu talk about getting people to return to Ireland… The rip off housing and scandalous marginal rate of tax over a pittance, would need to be addressed… that wont happen…

Darragh O Brien says he won't release them until 2pm the day of polling, even though he will have them before that day

With an election just around the corner, you wouldn't have guess that in my area.

Barely any literature in the post, no canvassers and barely any signs up compared to previous elections.

This general election is as dull as dish water, you listen to these debates such as recent one on "Upfront with Katie Hannon" and it was abysmally with an awful moderator in Katie Hannon. Why do I need to know what party you wont go into power with, why do I need to know your parties Gaza stance (it's a no brainer that they are going to support Gaza) all this rubbish instead of talking topics such as the terrible justice system in this country from our judges down to lack of Gardai presences across our country

It's actually sobering the mess this country is in tbh

The Soc Dems seem to be pushing Rory Hearne out every chance they get, wonder are they worried he will get nowhere like in the European elections.

We’re a signatory to the 1951 Geneva Refugee Convention. We have responsibilities to people fleeing war or persecution under that. Therefore we accredit them protection and due process until the case is decided. As we Irish would expect the same if fleeing the country.

We’re also a signatory to EU freedom of movement which allows our citizens to work elsewhere as it allows the citizens of other countries to work and reside here. No issue for me. Immigrants statistically more likely to contribute to the Treasury than local citizens.

I find that those who complain about immigrants are those that do least in this country. Be that in terms of work and taxation, but also voluntary or community work. Hate ain’t an achievement.

Nail , hammer, head... I'm telling you, a proper competent leader against this wome white, would do well in an election here... one if the big reasons for trumps victory, was a long overdue backlash, against the plague of wokeism...

Keep on prodding the sleeping bear and it will bite... but to do that it needs a leader, obviously that isn't an option here currently

I would pay anything to see hear the attacks Trump would launch on simon Harris, if he were his competitor in the US election

Also, the media here, rte, Katie Hannon are massively culpable in not holding government to account... then again, government fund the rte gravy train... but hey... our media are impartial..... Loooooooooooooooooool

We have no obligation house or pay unemployment to EU citizens who have never made social contributions beyond twelve weeks..

Our government said we could sustainably assist 3/4 thousand international protection applications from Syria over the period 2019 - 2023.

What’s has changed that we are now obligated to house people who already are in a process in other EU countries or people from designated safe countries. But as I said these topics are annoying tax payers the length and breath of the country.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,231 ✭✭✭✭Seathrun66

Refer to my previous post regarding our statutory obligations. These are not vague. If you’re unclear please refer to the statute books.

If these were annoying people throughout the country you’d see the far-right morons on course for power. Instead they’ll get next to no seats. So you’re best advised to reassess how many people are really annoyed. Sod all is the answer.

I don't know, abortion is 'legal' in England, but sex-selective abortion is against the law.

In order for an abortion to be legal, doctors need to show that continuing the pregnancy could threaten the physical or mental health of the mother. In a recent case, two doctors were caught on camera offering a sex-selective abortion but the Director of Public Prosecution deemed it not in the public interest to proceed with the prosecution.

Following this incidence, MPs voted 181 to 1 for a Bill put forward by Tessa Munt and 11 other MPs aiming to end confusion about the legality of this practice.

So it's pretty much a 'don't ask, don't tell' situation

Came across this on twitter, pity the 'political satire' thread was closed

unfortunately some people don’t want facts to get in the way of tired and over played narratives.

Nope, you need to re-read my post. It’s pretty clear. The highest number of immigrants are returning Irish. No other nationality comes close. The other 26 EU countries as a whole don’t even match the numbers of Irish.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 347 ✭✭chooey

but what about the other 86800 from out of the EU? Can’t see it broken down further

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,378 ✭✭✭✭suvigirl

I think you may have to look at those figures again. Also, pick a year with a local war, to try and prove a point about immigration? Very dishonest.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 347 ✭✭chooey

how is that dishonest? They’re CSO figures. I understand that those figures include Ukrainians but those figures are dropping since the welfare rules changed.
also as a net, if you look at the emigration figures, more Irish are emigrating than immigrating which is not the same for other groups.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,378 ✭✭✭✭suvigirl

What does your last sentence mean? More Irish are emigrating from Ireland, than other groups emigrating from Ireland?

It's a unique situation, disproportionate amount of Ukrainian refugees arrived because of a war.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,653 ✭✭✭riddles

We have about 4-500k EU migrants on social welfare and foreign nationals make up about 60% of the housing waiting lists. All the talk of building more houses is a pointless objective unless we understand clearly what’s driving the need.

It is clear our social welfare model is a draw and there are repeated cases to show it’s being abused. It’s a complete nonsense providing state support for visitors who have never been in employment or in some cases have had minimal employment. This has not been addressed at all in the election campaign even though the dogs in the street know this.

Well it might be irrelevant but the point was Martin said similar before 2020 election in regards to Fine Gael and done the opposite so how people believe these guys is beyond me

Well done on quoting a 11 year old newspaper article.

Possibly the figures are different now?

Our membership of the EU allows for freedom of movement (workers, includes former workers) and others. They can come here and we can go there. That's the benefit of EU membership.

    https://www.irishtimes.com/politics/2024/11/22/simon-harris-rejects-coalition-with-multi-party-left-wing-alliance/

Mr Harris also reiterated his commitment to tax cuts as a way of helping people with cost-of-living pressures. “What I’m definitely, definitely, definitely hearing from people ... and I don’t like that label, ‘squeezed middle’, but it’s real,” he said. “I mean, there’s a lot of people out there who are saying, ‘Look, Simon, I’m working hard, I’m playing by the rules, and I’m still struggling to find ends meet.’”

Simon Harris is full of bull£hit.

He had multiple budgets and surpluses to help ordinary working people and he did nothing.

Possibly most people consider it to be a foregone conclusion that FF and FG will be in power again afterwards with maybe Labour as the "eccentric Uncle" partner this time. They're probably not wrong either - even if neither get the numbers on their own, back-room deals will be done to get there and keep others out as happened before.

The lack of a real alternative for much of the population is a serious issue though when returning 2 parties who have wholly failed on the key issues is seen as the "best" option.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,268 ✭✭✭Allinall

There's been tax cuts for the last 4 or 5 years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,231 ✭✭✭✭Seathrun66

Ukraine (very obvioously), India (mainly students and IT, huge net contributors), Pakistan, Brazil, China, Syria, Japan, Nigeria, Phillipines, etc, etc. We're now a global country, and all the better for it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,231 ✭✭✭✭Seathrun66

2013 article. Seriously? Whilst coming out of the recession. Give us some current figures, or do they not suit your agenda? This from 11 months ago, unemployed figures include students, a large number Ukrainian refugees (mainly mothers of school-age children, or younger) and those excluded from working. When all taken into account the Irish unemployment percentage figure will be much higher than non-Irish.

Thus don't believe the lies from the far-right, many (most?) of whom are scrounging from the state and blaming others for their own personal ills. There are better choices on the ballot paper.

Mod: Folks, can we please be mindful when linking articles to check the dates they were published. Linking articles from 2013 (11 years ago) or 2003 (we had this in another thread recently) does not help your argument, it looks incredibly disingenuous which could be considered as bad faith posting/trolling. If you want to debate a topic and wish to link a source please ensure it is at least somewhat within the period you are discussing. I am adding this to the OP of the thread also. Thanks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,590 ✭✭✭Mr. teddywinkles

We had double figures after the crash recently too. But immigration took care of that again as per.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,223 ✭✭✭creedp

It is but what's annoying is that this free movement means EU workers coming here have higher entitlements that equivalent Irish workers while Irish going there get exactly what the local worker gets (i.e equal treatment). Just an example of how the Irih State worries more about other citizens than its own.
