A Country & Western programme presented by Mailbag's Arthur Murphy seems very out of place on the "youth" station.

I think Barry was in for Ronan Collins. Ronan is listed as the presenter again in RTÉ Guides from October.

Arthur was filling in for Pascal Mooney on keep it country.

Country music was very popular with the over 18s in Ireland with Big Tom and TR Dallas etc. It was on in the evening so appealed to a slightly older audience, just like Dave Fanning's rock show did.

By the way, 2FM were playing Country and Irish music up until 1999 with Alan Corcoran sunday nights!

i've seen the group shot (with the birthday cake before) but a bit weird still to see my old secondary school physics teacher in there.

If Wikipedia is to be believed, Ronan remained as breakfast show host until the end of May 1985. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_RT%C3%89_2fm_Breakfast_Show

2FM had some amazing Live gig coverage in the early 2000's, with Mr Spring/Sunil Sharpe et al usually involved….

Any ideas where to even start looking for some of these broadcasts?

I would absolutely lover to get my hands on The Advent, British Murder Boys, Surgeon sets from Planet Love 2009… plus numerous others.

There are some interesting entries. I did not realize that Gerry Stevens had left the pirate scene by 1987. Had he just recently left Q102 for 2FM? I did not know that Maxi had a show on Sundays mid-mornings. It is interesting to see the name Rory O'Brien as one of the contributors to her show. It is only in recent years that I learnt that he was previously with 2FM (Radio 2) and now see one example of where in the schedule. I also do not remember John Clarke's Sunday afternoon show Rock Roll & Remember.

It was strange that Michael McNamara was featured on the Maxi and Co. slot in this week, as this was a chance for new presenters around the country to gain national radio experience. Michael at that stage had been with Radio 2 for 8 years !!!

Yes John Clarke did weekend shows in his early years there in a variety of timeslots though never mornings I don't think - and he never had a weekday slot.

I was young at the time, but I vaguely remember the rebranding of Radio 2 to 2FM circa 1988. I can just about recall an ad campaign and a competition called "The Key to 2FM" (I think the prize was a Ford Escort.) My memories might be fuzzy, but because of those ads, I'd always assumed that Radio 2 just rebranded to 2FM and introduced the "heart" logo. Looking at the November 1987 listings, however, it seems there was a period of "hybrid" branding where the station was referred to as "Radio 2FM" with the heart logo.

Further up on this page, there’s one from November 1986 with the Radio 2FM logo, so it goes back at least that far. Like yourself, I thought that logo came in with the 2FM rebrand.

I clearly remember the "Radio 2FM" hybrid imaging period between "Radio 2" and "2FM" - it lasted around nearly 2 years - however if memory serves me correctly the DJs continued to announce the station in links as just "Radio 2".

I wonder had they initially wanted to call it "Radio 2FM" for this 1987 re-brand and gradually planned to change their mind in 1989 settling on just "2FM".

Though I think "2FM" was as a result of another re-launch in early 1989 a few months after Gerry Ryan moved to mid mornings. I remember the "2FM is mine" campaign.

It was in early 1987, the first Mercedes Roadcaster was introduced with a new one in 1996, but they continued using the 1987 as well, such was the demand and popularity of 2FM.

By the way it was in 2000 when that black/yellow heart shaped logo was replaced during the John Clarke re-brand - so it lasted 13 years !!

    GREAT DAYS !!!!!!!!!!!

On top of the hour, the djs would hand over to the news by saying, "on AM and FM nationwide, This is Radio 2 Fm"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,596 ✭✭✭JoeA3

That period from 1988-1998 was definitely 2FM’s heyday. They can only dream of that kind of popularity/relevance today.
Is the Roadcaster still a thing to this day? I can’t remember hearing or seeing any mention of it in years. Interesting that Today FM never bothered with a “roadcaster”, to my knowledge.

I don't remember the "2FM is mine" campaign, but I have find memories of the "2FM is the magic" ad, though that was early/mid 90s I think.

The 2006 model roadcaster is parked prominently between the Radio and TV centres at the front of the RTE campus, very visible from the Stillorgan road. It is branded with all RTE stations, not just 2FM. They use it still on 2FM and other radio shows. The desk is fairly basic with some faders, a monitor and 2 CD players.

RTE have multiple radio OB units I'm pretty certain.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 603 ✭✭✭Shan Doras

Even as recently as 7/10 years ago, the roadcaster was used every weekend for the Ruth Scott and Paddy McKenna show but after they left, it ceased to be a regular feature.

That was the late 80s (when it went 24 hours) / early 90s and there was a nice 2 minute jingle/song too that was made by JAM or one of those jingle companies.

I think I have a copy of it somewhere. 2FM used to play it before the top of the hour news.. sometimes if they had to fill 2 minutes, or if they had to wait for the TV ads to finish during The Beat Box simulcast !!

    From my memory😁😃:

    Chorus was:

    "2FM has the magic,
    something special every day,
words and music that live forever,
we share them each time we get together,
have a golden day with 2FM"

    Verse was:

    "2FM's your station,
we really do it all for you,
we start off in the morning,
but we never stop the night before ….."

    😀

About 10 years ago I was in The Square in Tallaght and thought to myself “what happened to the ‘Crow’s Nest’ studio they had here?” So I went up to find it, it was cleared out but still had the original 2FM logo on the wall.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 952 ✭✭✭TheBMG

TM Century were the jingle company and it was from the 1989 mini-relaunch. They were fond of playing it! Also I noticed Peter Collins listed for 12s on 2 - always enjoyed that show (Gerry Stevens hosted it too I think)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,857 ✭✭✭Declan A Walsh

It is interesting thinking about the former 2FM music presenters/deejays who went on to be fulltime sports presenters: Peter Collins, John Kenny (yes - I know he kept his hand in the music!) and Shane O'Donoghue.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 75,277 ✭✭✭✭L1011

Was used by the Tallaght local low power station; which I believe is gone. I believe they tried shopping it around other radio operators and nobody bit; its not quite the Dundrum studios in comparison!

There was also the 98fm bubble studio in Stephens Green, and there's something that I'm not sure about in Omni that really looks like it was meant to be the same as the Square one - up above the defunct upper floor cafe.

Fun fact, the late Simon young did his last ever 2fm show from that studio

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,157 ✭✭✭ford fiesta

The biggest jukebox was presented by Simon from The Square most Sundays from 1999 to 2001

Tgat 87 schedule is great reading. That was the year I really got into radio and listening to 2FM. The 12s On 2 show was great. Really enjoyed it back then. Great memories really, G Ryan and Mark Cagney at nighttime. I was too young to appreciate Fanning’s show but the charts with Larry on Sunday was required listening. God those were great days!
