Mercedes W14 €169.99 last week, €179.99 this week. Wonder how many more prices Smyths put up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,389 ✭✭✭Princess Calla

To be honest I have never found Smyth's price gouging.

They drop prices for a time period then return them. As said previously I never read the fine print so don't know if they advertise how long the price will stay low. So I've learned to buy when reduced/cheaper than the rest.

It is very rare Smyth's are higher in price than the rest of the retailers.

(I've no affiliation with Smyth's, but as toy retailers go I find them pretty much the best)

That Mercedes was reduced for ages. It's still far cheaper than buying direct from the Lego site or Lego shops

I always find Smyths good for price. They're a massive organisation nowadays with huge buying power. They must be one of the biggest toy shop chains in Europe

I dont even have the Mercedes yet and theres 2 more on the way already.

The marvel shield is reduced to 146 in the Lego store 140 in Smyth's.

Crystal ball territory but do you think it will go lower?

It was on "the list" last year but we're not marvel fans so not sure why, but I definitely wasn't paying last year's prices.....tempted with double points now. But I'll be raging if Smyth's go lower again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,355 ✭✭✭✭Exclamation Marc

Unlikely it'll go lower than that with 210 as the RRP. It seems its no longer available on Smyths online (searching for 76262 doesn't return anything).

For what its worth, I've heard its one of the more repetitive and boring builds (as well as being quite fragile). It's essentially the same part built 35-40 times with barely any variety. Looks great on completion as a display piece but I've a friend who really struggled to finish it.

It is very repetitive but throw on a few avengers movies while you build and it's a pleasure.

I think it was just the type of build I needed when I did it though.

Didn't find it to be fragile myself.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,389 ✭✭✭Princess Calla

I went for it! The eldest has lost their love for Lego so I'm hoping it will come back....I had read the reviews about it being repetitive, but that might actually suit them.

Also got the icons of play football set.

So then got the bakery gwp and I only had a few points to redeem so got the pallet truck.

So 4 sets for the original price of the shield plus double points....happy with that!

Got the F1 Mercedes 42171 recently and finished it yesterday.

Compared to the F1 McLaren 42141 the Mercedes looks a lot sleaker, smoother parts used, and a lot more stickers. Think it went up to 74 stickers on the Mercedes. Cant remember the McLaren from 2 years ago, but just looking at it is a lot less stickers. The McLaren's engine is also exposed so you can see the pistons moving. On the Mercedes it is covered, but the cover is removable, just sits loosely on top, then you can also see the pistons moving. The Mercedes has slick tyres, the Mclaren have wets, with the pattern. Front wing on the Mercedes way more detailed than the McLaren. The Merc can be steered by the little gear on top or its steering wheel, but I think the Mclaren can only be steered by its steering wheel which is hard to reach in. The Mercedes had a couple more "difficult" bits to do, attaching some assemblies without actually being able to see where it attaches, jus thave faith theres a pin or hole where you are aiming, stuff like that.

I also have the smaller Merc 42165 as reference, bit bigger than the Mclaren 76919 which is from the Speed Champion series, not Technic, so it also has a minifig with it.

A local charity shop is selling The Simpsons Kwiki-E-Mart.. already assembled, no box and incomplete. Not entirely sure how incomplete but it's missing the police car and only two out of six figures included. Although one of them is the 'Snake' character. It's a really cool looking set but is €100 a bit rich?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,569 ✭✭✭✭LambshankRedemption

That sounds like a lot for an incomplete set. Missing some minifigs is one thing, but once there is a question mark on the set as a whole, you have to wonder what else is missing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 387 ✭✭head82

Yeah, I was thinking the same. Same shop also has The Simpsons House. Same scenario.. assembled, no box and incomplete and also €100. I find charity shops in general over pricing themselves these days.

  • Moderators Posts: 6,927 ✭✭✭Spocker

Maybe make them an offer for both of the sets and see what they say?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 387 ✭✭head82

I feel a little uncomfortable haggling in a charity shop.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 78,693 ✭✭✭✭Victor

I was in a charity shop a few years ago and saw a child's microscope for about €5.

I asked could I check it out before I bought it and I said I thought it was severely under-priced, that one would normally expect to spend more than €100 on a new one.

It was aimed at 3-4 year olds, not 12 year olds. It had no magnifying ability. :(

I see with the brick search it's changed and they want annual/monthly payments to use it after 12 go's.

I just noticed if you put something in your basket online you can use your points for a discount there without having to convert them to a code

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,326 ✭✭✭RGARDINR

Yeah it's a lot better to be fair then a code.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,389 ✭✭✭Princess Calla

Is it just me or is this years black Friday gwp abit crap?

I love the train I'll defo be getting that. However the craft box is more unnecessary clutter I don't need and the record player I certainly wouldn't be spending 250 trying to get it.

I am not really pushed on the train as that's only if 170 euro spend, it's nothing special. This is being mentioned so will see when released as would be good if done over black Friday.

I actually love the record player (as I collect records myself) but jeez the €250 threshold is so high.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,326 ✭✭✭RGARDINR

Might of been better released as a lego Ideas set to buy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,389 ✭✭✭Princess Calla

The train will be lovely with my winter village if I ever get around to building it 😁

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 387 ✭✭head82

I'm really liking the look of Shackletons' 'The Endurance'. Especially with the gwp of 'The Caird' lifeboat.

Pricey at €270 but I'm more of a Shackleton fan than a Lego fan so I'll probably pull the trigger on it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,389 ✭✭✭Princess Calla

It's very small though 16cm x12 cm......now I'm not sure how big you'd realistically want it....I just think that's tiny. Especially for a 250 spend.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,326 ✭✭✭RGARDINR

Ha, it's that time of year you need to get it done. Would love to get that Shackleton ship on black Friday and get the Shackleton life boat GWP. You would get everything then with the other GWPs. But not sure as imperial pirate fortress is retiring so want to get that so hopefully that's dropped in price.

  • Moderators Posts: 6,927 ✭✭✭Spocker

Looking for some help from fellow Boardsies - I'm after the Retro Record Player thats one of the GWPs this weekend:

    https://www.lego.com/en-ie/product/retro-record-player-40699

but I've nothing in the wish list at the moment. If any of you Boards friends are purchasing this weekend who may get this as the GWP, I'd be more than willing to buy it from you for the €30, and cover the cost of delivery to me once you get it. I'm looking for 3, so if you're looking to offload, just let me know

If anyone missed 10243, the Parisienne Restaurant modular while it was available, I've just listed a complete set with box, instructions and LED light kit on Adverts:

If the shakleton ship is available at the same time as the promo I'd be happy to take you up on this offer. I love ships so will definitely be getting that but I've no interest in the record player
