Meanwhile iranian drones and north korean shells are raining down in Ukraine. While north korean troops are fighting Ukrainian forces on behalf of Putin.

Russian forces had some run with every arm free whilst calling any retaliation an act of escalation. About time Ukraine got some fingers free if not for a few months before Trump.

Russia don't play fair and that's the highest understatement going. But they never had a fair fight replayed on them back. The hollowering now is just that they've been found out as they can only fight someone if they tie their hands behind their back first.

Big concern is been expressed by Russian Milbloggers over the Biden weapon announcement.

    A) if you think it was done wrongly then you don't think there was decline and are being disingenuous.

    B) He dropped out after a disastrous debate performance that made trump's ramblings look coherent.

He was in better form the next week at the UN meetings but that was too late for his presidential run. trump was smart by chickening out of further debates with Harris, putin will control him like a MIB style Edgar suit:

I still can’t believe this is only happening now.

Shame on the west and the US for waiting so long.

All because they might hurt Putins feelings???

    Grow some balls at last..

On the approval of missike strikes the question is what will Russia's response be and whether or not they respond immediately or after a strike?

They've a number of obvious options and it probably depends on the nature of the permission (are there very restrictive conditions on use?) - they can do nothing, they can do a "quiet" response (a cyber attack or some such), sabotage (cables, pipelines) or some sort of demonstration strike on Ukraine with a nuclear weapon or other form of WMD.

I think WMD is unlikely as it's just not in Russia's interest.

Overall it will help Ukraine but without doubt the notion of NATO effectively firing missiles in to Russian territory makes the whole situation a lot more dangerous imo.

One thing that might mitigate against some extreme response from the Russian perspective is the knowledge Biden is on the way out.

How in gods name is NATO firing missiles into Russia??

    What are you waffling about??

Don't believe myself that the decision to restrict the use of long range US weapons by Ukraine had anything to do with putin's feelings. Can only speculate but maybe it has been a behind the scenes agreement that weapons sent by the USA would remain restricted as long as countries sending supplies to putin would also in some ways restrict what they would send. Maybe north Korean troops attacking Ukrainian forces was enough of an escalation by the forces supporting putin to negate any such agreement. Could also be simply a calculation that with the amount of missiles available it was decided that Ukraine would be better off initially only targeting putin's forces actually in their territory rather than spreading the targets too widely and having less of an impact on the front lines.

If they were going to cut Biden, they needed to do it for someone better than Harris who was - despite massive media manipulation trying to convince us she was beloved by all - a nobody. It made no sense to pretend Biden was too incompetent to run for President, but was perfectly capable to serve as President. Absolute best course of action would have been to recognise Bidens decline back in 2023 and run a proper Dem primary then. Failing that to rush a primary after Biden was forced out. Instead there was neither and Trump strolled to an easy victory against Harris.

And here we are with Biden - a man the Dems decided was too incapable to run for President - apparently deciding to declare war on Russia.

I do wonder how much of the decision making is actually done by Biden, and to what extent he's just a doddery figurehead slumped in the corner of the room while others make the decisions. Blinken is well known for his hatred of Russia for reasons of his family history (though his stepfather was a Russophile - maybe connected) and when Starmer came to the US a few months back seeking US support for UK attacks on Russia it was apparently at Blinken's urging. Starmer was humiliated when Biden and others said no then. Perhaps Blinken is still pushing for strikes now, and others are leaking to try sabotage it.

How many "escalations" has Russia done (for free) since 2022 now, I think I have lost track? Biggest one being getting Kim the Mad King to send support troops.

    Who cares.

It’s happening and that’s all that matters

Seems our Russian sympathetic friends are really riled up. Must mean the decision is a good one.

    Glad to see it.

NATO personel have to do the targeting with these weapons, not Ukrainians. As Putin said that is a declaration of war on Russia so we just need to see now what the response is going to be.

Olaf Scholz is looking worse and worse for not sending the Taurus.

Lads ATACAMS were used in Russia already. They used them on the river crossings in the Kursk region. Now they'll have more scope including deeper into Crimea.

IMO this is a direct response to Russia escalating by allowing North Korea attack a sovereign nation. And the massive russian strike on Ukraine energy infrastructure yesterday probably was the last straw.

I'm going to take a guess and congregations of north Korean troops in Kursk will be hit by these missiles. I'm guessing they'll just move jets and ammo dumps further back out of range but even this hampers logistics and means it Russian jets and helis will be slower to attack.

This decision should have come a long ago but ATACAMS, SCALP, Storm Shadows all getting permission is a welcome boost. I believe we are one step closer to Taurus now. Maybe after the election in a few months. They could drop the Kerch bridge permanently and then move onto other HVT in Russia.

The ATACMS (with the aide of some high resolution cameras on satellites) could potentially break the Russian defensive lines in the Kursk region. We could see some large territorial gains into Russia. Kursk city could be occupied. How many more miles to Moscow?

This is bringing the war back home to Russia.

    Want it to stop?

    Then leave Ukraine

American, British or French ultimately depending on the missile. If it's Storm Shadows/SCALP then that's going to be British and French personnel.

It's a really serious escalation and I don't see how the Russians are going to just let it go which is what many seem to be hoping.

The only thing I see mitigating a bigger response is that the US administration only has 2 months left.

Some serious gnashing of teeth here from the usual suspects!

    Are you afraid of Russia?

Just because you’re scared, doesn’t mean everyone else is afraid and especially Ukrainians.

If you’re afraid and scared that’s your issue, deal with it.

It is ridiculous though, Russia can escalate to the moon apparently (and those aiding Ukraine can never reply). I suppose that's what loads of nuclear weapons does for you (though maybe Russia should try and remember they aren't the only people on this planet with them).

They failed to "win" their war on their own, and they have many 3rd parties quite deeply involved in the invasion now, giving them this kind of aid, keeping the war going on.

Afair, they supply targetting help to the Houthis too, as part of their grey zone attacks on US/Europe on multiple fronts.

I almost hope they are dumb and arrogant enough to carry out a direct attack of some kind on the US.

If they cause enough harm, it might create serious blowback on them that even a friendly "Manchurian candidate" coming into power won't necessarily be able to stave off.

I'd be very worried with this new instruction from the Biden administration that Ukraine is now free to launch US made long long-range weapons deep into Russia. Surely this is a major escalation of hostilities???

It's announced and going to happen.

In my opinion it's an excellent idea. It allows Ukraine to further strike back at it's invader (something they already do with their own missiles)

There's no magic bullet to change course of the war, but it will certainly help. Russia will have a massive headache having to move logistic centres, arms dumps, etc out of the way. Likewise will have to employ many more resources to defend key sites such as military airports.

Russia can respond (weakly) via Iran/Houthis but they won't be striking NATO ships.

The rest of your post is an extension of that fantasy about Iran/Houthi's striking NATO ships which won't be happening.

I can see this good news for Ukraine has triggered the usual suspects.

No surprise obviously about the announcement from us ,we'll publicised phone calls and meetings between the involved parties, so Ukraine will attack Russian assets and Russia will reply, then a big announcement of peace talks and dick swinging, then an announcement of Ukraine will have an agreement with Russia to make Donbass etc a D .m .z and Crimea ,and life moves on ,people made a lot of money and thousands died but they don't care ,on to the next war for them .

A slight bit worried about Putins implied threat of nukes

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,130 ✭✭✭Akabusi

I'm no geopolitical expert either but I consider the decision by Putin to invade a sovereign state and use Iranian weapons and Norht Korean troops to be a major mistake. Why did he have to cause so much death and destruction? Event s in the next few weeks/months will prove me hopefully right.

As opposed to Russias continued attacks and now getting troops from North Korea?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 561 ✭✭✭CliffHangeroner

Putin won't use nukes. This is too little too late from Biden. As soon as Trump gets into power the Ukrainians are in a spot of bother and he knows it. Putin won the war 2 weeks ago this is just Joe lashing out.

Hopefully these arms can do maximum damage to the Russians, and they have plenty of time to put them to work. Make hay while the sunshine’s.

North Korea entering this war opened the door for this. No surprise.
