There was an error displaying this embed.

I would say that he's faster than you'd think.

I thought Casey in particular got absolutely no protection at the rucks for his 10 mins or so. Some of that is obviously on our pack, but mostly for me the ref was just allowing a free for all on those rucks in terms of Argentines lying on the wrong side, flopping on the ball etc.

There's a lot of talk about our lineouts, as well there should be but my god our work at ruck time is terrible, we've gone completely off the boil there and as a result our penalty count has increased, even ignoring the penalties that kicked at goal, the amount we concede in attack in the opposition 22 is growing and very disheartening when watching the game. All that great work to get into the 22 and we gift them a turnover.

I'd love to see a plot diagram of where on the field we concede penalties and which team was in possession of the ball. Team YC were almost alien to us but now we got team warnings in our last two matches.

    That Drop Goal

Unfortunately, our last score of the game and it turned out to be the winning of the game

Apart from the converted try scored after it!?

We have to start building depth. Losing to Fiji is unlikely even with a rotated squad but hammering them with a mostly full strength side proves nothing if many of those key players will be retired by the next RWC

True, I actually thought Joe's try was before the DG

Id like to see Kendellan capped against Fij not least because he's English qualified and we need to commit hin to Ireland (but also because he's an outstanding player)

I'm still in shock. That second half was a disaster. What has happened to that Ireland team?

The six nations could be very very ugly.

It was an excellent DG too. It’s something I’d like to see more off.

There was one stage in the second half, I can’t remember the time I’d have to look back to see, where James Lowe caught a ball just inside the Argentina half and seemed to have all the space in the world in front of him. He made plenty of metres but I was thinking if that was Rob Kearney with all that time and space and the pressure on the scoreboard he probably would have went for a DG.

You should probably edit this as it's not true in anyway

The way our lineout has been for quite some time, you'd question turning down kickable penalties in the opposition half. The dropped goal, excellently done was following a kick to the corner.

Aside from our likelihood to f**k up the lineout, strong packs are able to contain or turn over our maul.

    One thing:

If you're not going to compete, defensively, in a linout then stop the half jump nonsense and set for the ground defence.

Argentina are arguably better than every other 6N side so I'm not quite sure.

Late in the second half, our game screamed out for a DG, we needed a cushion of more than 3 to see it out and couldn't get close to scoring a try. I know, there was an argument about gifting them territory from the restart but we saw how close they got to our try line at the end anyway and we had only a 3 point lead to defend.

Same here, it looked like he was going to try it at one stage and then just didn't, ran into a tackle

I thought at one stage in second half it looked like going for points, then they went to corner. I wonder was the kicker, can't remember who was on, able to make the kick

Looked at some of the penalties again - it is amazing to me that we were only awarded 6 penalties in the whole game.

    The penalties we were awarded:

    • 2 mins - Moroni shoulder to head on Crowley (TMO called, ref initially called play on)
    • 18 mins - Tip tackle by Oviedo on James Ryan
    • 27 mins - Isgro goes through the ruck and blatantly plays JGP
    • 64 mins - scrum penalty awarded against Argentina tight head
    • 67 mins - Argentina chaser in front of the kicker (called by touch judge)
    • 75 mins - Kodela shoulder to head on Doris (called by TMO)

That means in the whole game, Paul Williams saw 3 infringements total, and in a game with relatively little kicking (compared to last week) and plenty of attacking from both sides, he didn’t think Argentina were never offside and never committed a single technical infringement at any ruck (apart from Isgro’s, and that was incredibly obvious).

That is not only unusual - it’s frankly unprecedented I would say. It’s not like this is some brilliantly disciplined Argentinian side - across their 10 games this season before this they’d conceded on average of 10.5 pens per game.

Agreed. We know Lowe has the kicking power but can he drop kick ?.

Defensive clearances aimed at receivers who can & will drop kick could limit the defending kickers options to kicking for touch. Even a missed drop goal attempt keeps the opposition in their own half and (usually) guarantees getting possession back.

If Argentina hadn't 'scored' their intercept try would the TMO have intervened about the head on head contact? I heard no contact between any of the officials following the incident.

He is ready to start for Ireland, but where? There is a lit of serious competition at 12 and 15. And with Barrett's arrival the same will apply at Leinster.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 2,007 ✭✭✭Ben Bailey

Yes this also occurred to me.

That being said, one of the key markers of any improving side is improved discipline. Sadly the opposite is also true.

Not my stats but if they're true they're damning

    13 penalties conceded

    30 missed tackles

Tight five that combined for 36 metres made from 36 carries

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,477 ✭✭✭✭bilston

Casey isn't that inexperienced now. He may not have a massive numper of starts but he should have a reasonable number of minutes clocked up now?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,723 ✭✭✭Pete_Cavan

At least issues have been highlighted now and not during the 6N. Apart from prop, I still think Ireland has enough quality to win the 6N, even with moving on from a few older lads.

The Beirne in the back row experiment is a failure (again). He adds so much having him at lock and Ryan and Joe Mc aren't playing that well that Beirne has to be moved to get them on the pitch. It only unbalances the back row. If they want a 5.5 and another line out option, Baird/Izzy should be starting 6 (I think Connors would be good there too). A proper lock should be on the bench along with C Predergast, POM doesn't add much at this stage.

Back 3 needs a shake up but not sure what to do there. Nash isn't really a point of difference to what's already there. Pity Kilgallen is injured, he would be worth the national coaches investing a bit of time in.

Need to give proper game time to fringe props over the next two weeks.

It’s 26 carries for 36m, but still not great. James Ryan accounted for almost half that total at 17m.

None of our pack carried particularly well. Beirne got some easier carries in wide channels (most of his came on the try he knocked on), and JVDF and Doris carried into heavy traffic all day.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,088 ✭✭✭Clo-Clo

He has 16 caps(based on wiki_. I would expect most are from the bench, could be wrong.

Putting a young 10 with his first cap in against Fiji who are 9th in the World is leading to trouble IMO

Murray or JGP would be the player I would put with Predergast if starting

Casey/Frawley if that is the other option.

Ah yeah just post stats that could or could not be true. Sure what's the difference

Just from watching the game, even if the stats aren’t completely accurate, would you say they will be substantially different??

I can’t imagine the actual stats are going to present a rosy picture of penalty count, missed tackles and carries by the Tight 5.

    Right?

FWIW, it was widely reported we gave away 13 penalties.

And IrishRugby.ie has us down for 31 missed tackles. And the tight 5 carrying for 36m off 36 carries.
