I have to say, I am shocked. Who could possibly have predicted this?

Clearly Elon Musk in Trump's executive has massive potential conflict of interest problems. The potential for corruption is gargantuan, and I cen see DJT making sure that the relevant laws are not enforced. He is after all, immune when it comes to official acts (including failure to act?)

The war could've been ended years ago if the US had chosen to support Ukraine with what it's asked for. It's more convenient to use it as a means to bleed Russia, at the cost of Ukrainian lives.

As to the value of Ukraine to the West, it's one of the most important sources for grains and fertilizer for the entire planet. Can't see the EU being keen on handing Russia more leverage to extort them with

I see Trump still hasn't signed the ethics undertaking and hasn't declared no conflict of interest yet. But he has given Musk a role in government even though all of his companies are being investigated by numerous State and Federal regulatory bodies.

Accusations also abound that the Department of Government Efficiency will be a crypto pump and dump scheme making both Musk and Trump ridiculously wealthy before they force a market crash in the next couple of years. Republicans get richer, everyone else gets poorer until the Dems come in and reduce the deficit. Rinse and repeat.

    Early setback for Trump.

Himself and Musk wanted Rick Scott as Senate Majority Leader because he indicated that he'd be most willing to do whatever was asked of him.

Unfortunately for them it was a private vote and Scott was eliminated in the first round of voting.

John Thune beat John Cornyne in the run-off and becomes the new Senate majority leader.

I must be the only one who missed that Elons new role is in the proposed Department of Government Efficiency (ie DOGE). How hilarious 🙄

Also read a piece in the FT about how there is a move back to using X by some of the large companies that previously left, now that Elon has established the ties to Trump.

Basically the idea is that X is a backdoor to exposure to the president.

Given he bought for 44bn, its not worth about 11bn, and advertising has dropped every year since he bought the place, it might make you wonder if Elon was being entirely altruistic in his intentions supporting Trump 🤔

I don't think anybody believes there is the me rest hint of altruism in his support!

I would have thought so, but had a recent conversation with someone who genuinely believed that because Trump and Musk are rich that they're only into politics to help (I did laugh when I realised they were making the point without a hint of cynicism)

Apparently Arab-Americans who stayed at home because Biden was feeble about calling out Israeli misdeeds didn't.

Matt Gaetz being nominated for Attorney General.

    **** lol.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 24,220 ✭✭✭✭Tell me how

Will congress seriously accept Gaetz' nomination?

What a sh*t show this has all become.

They were warned, it's on every Conservative voter and mouthpiece that America now looks like something it has spent decades threatening to impose sanctions on if they didn't get their act together.

    Do they care?

It's also in the interest of the Trump government for Europe to shift to the right and there are few better ways to make a country shift to the right than being inundated with refugees or migrants.

Congress is elected every two years, Senators every 6 years. Senators are there for the long haul. They are not as easy to replace as Congressmen and women.

I imagine Musk will be only too happy to see an end to this sort of snooping into his affairs and what better place to be right now than hanging with Donny? I believe there's up to 5bn in capital he borrowed that he hasn't declared where it came from and there is little doubt that Russia would consider it a small price to pay to have one of their assets back in the White House:

Trump is gonna have to face congressional by-elections to replace the people he's taking from congress into his administration.

Or is he gonna try and claim they can double job?

Is there any rule that says a congressman cant also be the AG? (For example)

I don't think they care about conflicts of interest

Gaetz has already resigned his seat in the House.

That means a special election is going to happen. Johnson suggested they could turn it around by Jan 3rd meaning the new member will join with all others who won last week.

Im just back from a short break in Connecticut a largely Blue State early on during my visit I quickly realised how Trump had prevailed. People who had never before voted Rep. now voted Trump and when I asked why i got these answers. 1 Trump was going to restore law and Order in the Cities. 2 . The Illegal emigration was going to be sorted.3. The US were were going to stop wasting money on helping Ukraine. 4. A woman preident was never going to Happen.5 The whole aboortion womens rights and Transgender issues was plainy wrong. All these resopses were qualified with the resonse " Oh I know Trump is a despicable person but at least he is offering an alternative vision of America and Im happy with that" . One Democrat said she voted for Harris but the reason they lost was Biden should have stood down earlier. They also thought 3 Dollars for a gallon of petrol was outrageous. And what depressed me most was these were not Right Wing Maga types but ordinary working and in some cases buisness owners. But then again its their country and the can choose whom they like. Hopefully the whole thing doesnt implode into chaos, though some of his choices for cabinet are strange to say the least. Anyway thats what i encoutered during my short stay their last week.

I knew Trump's picks would be bad, but holy ****…what the hell.

Gaetz in particular was about to have an apparently damning House Ethics report released on him, which now won't be released because he's resigned from the Senate. That's absolutely insane.

Still, you get what you vote for America…no sympathy for them.

Sadly, there was no one willing to listen to the concerns about genocide in Gaza . The Guardian carried a report a number of days ago. It said those concerned with the destruction in Gaza were faced with 99.99% chance of Trump making things worse, or 100% chance of Biden/Harris making it worse.

We now see that Biden has increased munitions supply to Israel in defiance of his own statement that he would reduce the supply if humanitarian aid was not allowed into Gaza. So, those voters were right.

Everyone he has picked so far is from a safe seat. Their only concern was the length of time between now and the special elections if the majority was wafer thin.

Presumably all those advocating countries should just give up their territories without any resistance would all be nice little quislings if something similar was to happen in their own country

Whatever about the rest of the picks this one is straight up a "I'm coming after my political enemies" indicator. Picking someone who has zero morals and will likely be incompetent but will be 100% loyal.

If I were someone who had had a beef with Trump in the past I'd be considering moving to Canada.

Even Senate Republicans think he's a terrible pick. Thing is they have 53 of them now and I can't see 4 of them being brave enough to vote against him in a public vote. Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins might because they don't have to worry about being primaried. Struggling to think of any others.

I guarantee that Oklahoma's Markwayne Mullin will vote for him, if it comes down to it, even after saying this about him last year.

There seems to be some talk of getting these picks through when Senate is on recess - no idea if that's actually a real thing or not but personally I hope the Senators have to vote for these clowns.

From his point of view, I'd be more concerned about what the FBI, NSA and Congressional lawyers are going to do to him, if it does look like he may squeak a confirmation.

They could very easily destroy his life and career. Same goes for Hesgeth.

Also a lot of them like the idea of settling down Middle East problem, many ofthem have a visceral hatred of hezbollah and the Iranian regime, like many in the middle East they don't like Palestinians or amas see them as violent reprobates.

There is a lot more nuance to it than the western rich kids waving flags on a Saturday would suggest

The whole Trump's first term wasn't too bad, don't worry too much about second one hasn't aged well already.

I don't recall key appointments like this from his first term.
