We all know there's lots of times where a sequel is better to the original. Like T2, Godfather II, etc

But I was trying to figure is there prequel films that are better than the original? I can't think of any off the top of my head

A little bit of a cheat but Rise of the Planet of the Apes is better than the og Planet of the Apes imo. I actually watched POTA over the weekend with the kids and other than the ending, it's a bit crap.

Not all great films but a few spring to mind.

Annabelle the original isn't great, the prequel Annabelle: Creation is much better imo.

    Pearl (prequel to X)

Bumblebee (I am guessing that counts as it is a prequel to transformers?)

Orphan First Kill, it embraces the campiness of the first one but it's so much more fun imho. I adore Twin Peaks but Fire Walk Me is equal to series at least and laid the groundwork for the return.

Not a movie but I think Better Call Saul was possibly a little bit better than Breaking Bad and the idea of it was hated. A great prequel should enrich the original and be able to stand on own, I think it did that.

Had a similar conversation to this in a pub once and without missing a breath one of the group answered "Temple of Doom" which to be perfectly honest I had not even twigged was a prequel. But it was better than Raiders of the Lost Ark in my own opinion.

Since the Willy Wonka reboot with Depp was so bloody awful - I guess the recent "Wonka" as a prequel is miles better on nearly every level. But I am of an age that I would never rank it as better than the one I grew up with :)

Rogue One when counted as the prequel to the final StarWars trilogy.

One of my favourite Star wars films. Closes loopholes in the story beautifully.

For me, Cube zero was more enjoyable than Cube, partly because the acting in Cube was so bad, but also because it gave some very vague hint as to wtf was actually going on in the first place. I did like all the Cube movies though.

Not sure if it counts as there was a Cube 2 as well, but afaik zero is set before them both.

Ouija: Origin of Evil is far better than the original Ouiji movie.

Will likely be controversial for some but Bladerunner 2049 over the original for me.

Not trying to be edgy or anything, it's just my firm belief/opinion.

Not sure would I agree that either 2 examples above are better than the first movie. As I've so often mentioned, for me the De Niro flashback episodes in GII keep interfering with the momentum of the main narrative. Also, I've found T2 to be special-effects driven with the rudiments of a plot tacked on, whereas T1 was a very solid package with the effects supporting the story, the way it should always be in movies.

Blade Runner 2049 is not a prequel, the original was set in 2019.

Sorry yes, I had the first line of the OP in my head when responding…that is, I completely misread it😆

Ya can't agree on ToD being better than RoTLA. I watched both back to back around a year ago and I was shocked how much I disliked ToD in comparison. Not that it's a bad movie per se but RoTLA is a 100% thrill a minute from the off. ToD drags an awful lot in the middle.

ToD is a much more mean spirited movie compared to RoTLA or TLC I find, it would be my least favorite of the original three movies but still has it's moments - the opening fight in Club Obi Wan is great fun.

Temple of Doom is by far the weakest of the original three , Kate Capshaw alone makes it unwatchable

Spielberg himself has said that meeting his wife was the only thing he likes about that movie

Dune 2. It's out today on sky cinema. I wanted to rewatch from very start of the story, but Dune is not on any streamer or sky cinema, it is only on Sky store. FFS who’s responsible for this disaster??

I think the 2 examples put forward by the OP are perfect examples. T2 is a big step up from Terminator in many respects.

The first time I saw Godfather, I thought it dragged a bit. But the same can't be said for Godfather II. I thought it was a remarkable. Many years later, I went back and watched the first one, and it was definitely better than I thought the first time. But not as good as the sequel. The less said about the third one, the better.

The first Terminator is a superb movie..low enough budget, horror type film..

The 2nd is also superb as a big budget, blockbuster type film....

    Hard to compare the 2....

I love the 1st one...and wouldnt dismiss it as being inferior to T2.

They're stylistically two different films, much like Cameron's Aliens vs Scott's original; pretty much different genres so it's difficult to directly compare.

Having said that I do prefer T2 to T1. For the longest time I preferred Aliens to Alien but I find it hard to pick between them these days.

I always felt GF 2 was the better of the first 2. However, I re-watched all 3 again relatively recently and now feel GF 1 is the better, more tightly honed, film. Take nothing from part 2, it's absolutely phenomenal and both are all timers. Part 3 certainly has its problems but it isn't bad IMO.

I saw ToD in Savoy 1 back in the day, absolutely loved it and thought it was my favourite for a while...But it definitely is the weakest of first 3 without doubt.

As much as I love Temple of Doom, there's just no way I can put it ahead of Raiders.

That must be Nigel with the brie...

X Men: First Class gives the original a run for its money.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,679 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Both are carried by amazing actors playing X and Magneto but the First Class movies have a better supporting cast and a much better "vibe".

If for no other reason it's automatically better for not having that wooden plank Cyclops.

Separately I'm one of those that doesn't see Tempe of Doom as a true prequel. It is because Lucas says so but nothing about when it's set is mentioned or relevant. I never even noticed despite seeing it a million times until it suddenly became cool to point it out for "geek cred".
