use the wifi file explorer app run it on the stick it gives you an ip and port to connect to and you can access and transfer files to the stick from the pc

    Hi,

Are Firesticks generally a good bargain on Black Friday? I bought 2 a few years ago, one of them seemed to brick itself (a known issue a good while back). Thinking of getting a 4K or 4K MAX one for faster processing.

No such thing as a stupid question….but is there any benefit if I'm streming from Cinema Free (or similar) and Netflix (not premium which supports 4k). For Netflix there's be no beneift. I also have Amazon, Disney; no idea if they have different subscription plans, some with and without 4K.

Edited to add- I noticed 4K MAX for €60 on Adverts (Techbay. Seller has hundreds of positive feedbacks. How are they managing to sell at that price?

they're generally reduced yeah, wouldn't buy them at full price.

4k is included as standard with prime & Disney+, you'd also be able to stream 4k from your other sources. obviously need a 4k TV too

Normally if they have just released a new model it wont be discounted much, but the 4K Max gen 2 was released Sep last year, so I would expect a good discount across the range.

@dinneenp - I would get 4K Max simply to futureproof yourself if you upgrade your TV or Wifi for a few extra quid.

Late to the party, but big thanks to those who figured out how to get the RTE player back working on older firesticks.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 6,439 Mod ✭✭✭✭Nowso

works well had the arsenal game on it as the stream is better than soarview

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 958 ✭✭✭Trevord

Yes that was the first thing I noticed about the live feed - RTE on Saorview is 1440x1080i and the resolution on the App seems to be higher. 1920×1080p

I'm fortunte to get the odd trip to the US and paid $27 for a 4k Gen 2 and the 4k max gen 2 was $39 mlast month . The main difference for me being that the former is wifi 6 and the latter wifi 6e. I think there are storgae differences as well. They usally have comparable deals on the UK amazon site for Black friday. This issue is they wont post /send to an address in the Republic

Can I ask which store in the US did you buy that from?

And speaking of US purchases ………. has anyone got their hands on an ONN stick from Walmart? They seem to be very cheap, less than US$20. Wondering how they would perform over here compared to a firestick.

I always buy from Amazon. You can you use your existing account and change country in the app if on phone or just try login to '.com' rather than '.co.uk' or set up a new account. I always use Amazon locker. That way if anything happens and you don't collect your 'stuff' within 72 hours Amazon take it back and refund you. I find that you can get same day delivery to most lockers when it comes to Firesticks and most of Amazon's own branded hardware. Best buy always have them in stock if you fancy a more traditional bricks and mortar shop and they seem to track the Amazon website price

the onn boxes are locking up if not set up with a us ip etc avoid them

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,683 ✭✭✭wassie

There is quite a few Amazon counter pickup points in Newry now. Oohpod lockers in Jonesborough is the latest one which is handy as they are open until 7pm weeknights and you have 7 days in which to collect.

Mind you, when Amazon finally open an Irish store next year, this will be a thing of the past.

Wondering though whether an Irish store would make any difference when it comes to access to firesticks?

Did anyone ever get an explanation as to why Amazon won't sell them on the Irish market from the .co.uk store? It just seems like they have chosen not to do that.

Maybe they want to avoid complaints from Irish customers about geoblocked apps not working. That issue wouldn't change when the .ie store opens.

I assumed they thought they'd have amazon.ie up two years ago 6 months after they stopped selling them to us from.co.uk and didn't realise Ireland is hard to business.

Maybe they just wanted to. Could be Brexit too.

a slight upgrade on the rte player - it installs and updates the previous version without needing to uninstall old version

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 885 ✭✭✭manster

Maybe they have a 3rd party deal with Currys not to sell them below a certain price - who knows

In any case, shop around as the 4k Max version is available at different prices

    • Currys.co.uk are selling at €54 (£44.99 as part of Black Friday)
    • On adverts.ie 'zteck naas' is selling at €60
    • Currys.ie are selling at €89.99 (no Black Friday deal as yet)

On Amazon UK 4k Max gen 2 - £44.99 new, £40.99 refurbished, gen 1 34.99 / 31.99 respectively. They won't ship to Ireland though, so family/friends up North would be handy. ;-)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,683 ✭✭✭wassie

Prime members can just have it shipped to any of the Amazon collection points just over the border for free.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 6,439 Mod ✭✭✭✭Nowso

4k max gen 2 now €69.99 on currys website , others also reduced

Safe to assume that the rteplayer live still doesn't work on fire stick?
