It's good that 3 and a 1/2 years since Sky discontinued the Now stick it is still being supported. I presume the support is by Roku and the Now stick gets the same updates as that generation of Roku stick. Long may it last because without it our 3 different brands of tv, I take it that Samsung is a 4th brand, that doesn't have access to the VM player. Anyway glad to see the update and the continued support.

I keep one of the sticks in a travel bag, its handy for keeping in touch, news etc, and saves having to sign into tv's, for Netflix, Spotify, when abroad. It will be interesting to see how the LIVE feature will work away.

I picked up a new Smart Stick in Tesco’s as late as March 2023, they had loads of stock still at that point. They might not now mind! Cex used to be full of them going for a song from people who had used the bundled passes but had no use for the hardware (the value of the pass was usually much bigger than what the hardware cost which was the main reason people bought them).

It baffles me how the TV manufacturers struggle to implement, never mind maintain, such simple functionality on a €1400 TV bought relatively recently while a cheap stick can do it all. On my Samsung Qled bought Dec 2017, and a very current set right through 2018 -2019, Samung never had VM player, they killed off RTE Player on it recently, and also updated (downdated?) the software of the only browser app available for it so it no longer supports web players, any of them.

I've had similar experiences with players , I bought a Sony tv about 15 years ago, it had the TV3player, the player wasn't updated and just stopped, likewise with a Samsung bluray, RTEplayer updated but the machine didn't support it. So I stick with the Now sticks for as long as I can. A neighbour bought a Toshiba tv from Tesco recently which doesn't have the RTE player, my one bought in Powercity does, is there that sort of software difference, I don't know.

Is that an issue with the TV manufacturers? Or with RTÉ not updating their software?

The RTE excuse for the Samsung player demise was a masterclass in talking out of the side of your mouth. Not their fault, not Samsung's, welll..., maybe a bit, and not enough customer support (blame us), it's a wonder they didn't blame a Barter account, or Tubs.

In my Samsung case, RTE released a new updated app and the bluray player couldn't handle it. It happens all the across the IT world, a new app is released and its not compatible with a pc, phone, TV.

With regard to RTE/ public service broadcasting funding model, it was announced in yesterday's UK budget that the BBC is to be given increased public funding for the BBC World service. I don't know the amount but in the past I saw a figure of £600 million, I don't know how yesterday's allocation will compare .

Does RTÉ have a world service? They do get some funding from the Foreign Affairs Department for some world affairs on the news, but not the soft power of the BBC.

I suppose online radio has world availability, essential for expats maybe, but I doubt it would be included in hotel stream menus, like BBC. BBC World service on hotel TVs is the new Gideon Bible of our times.

I don't suppose RTE or Vmtv are doing anything for Halloween? I know we all have the internet now but what that logic they may as well skip Christmas next

VMTVs film rights are bargain bin - scraping the barrel ones, where they seemingly have about 20 made for tv movies and just show them every month for the past 4 years .No horrors within them.

They've seeped back into these shite clickbait documentaries again, and they've one about Cutting off a Penis tonight.

RTÉ largely forgets Horror movies at Halloween don't think they have really done anything in years, TG4 has Hotel Transylvania 2!

While RTÉ have quietly relaunched storyland! Tonight after a Halloween special of the 2 Johnnies

According to the BBC's own figures, the service is available in 1.3m hotel rooms and 300m homes world wide, how many would be on a subscription basis, extra income. There is no comparison between the BBC and RTE in terms of finance, reach and influence but some viewers make comparisons. Just on the public funding, the Common Wealth Office was at one time subbing the WS to the tune of £600m and the Dept of Defence £900m, those figures has reduced significantly over the years

Two jonnies, that's Horror alright, all year round.

1.3 million ho-tellys. The Gideons dropped two billion bibles according to them. I assume most were replacements, thats100 for every hotel room in the world, more if you remove hotels which would prefer korans or quarans.

RTÉ have made comparisons in the past. if they can why can't we.

BBC World was always a soft power, and UK governments saw that in the past.

But RTÉ could be that soft power but you'd need a Minister for Foreign Affairs or Defense to fund such a service.

RTE TWO badly needs to move on from showing the big bang theory and the goldbergs at 5/6pm. Are they going to leave them both on repeat in that slot for 15/20 years like they had sister sister and Sabina the teenaged witch ???

They were showing Sunday evening lions/tigers/elephants type programmes on a midweek evening. How hard up can they be for something interesting to show? There are extraordinarily watchable programmes on YouTube, WW2 detailed looks at specific events, fascinating industrial documentaries, etc. Last night I watched a pristine black and white documentary from the 1950's about advances in British transport, rail, road and sea, which opened with a then current major project to build a new 3 mile transpennine. tunnel from Woodhead to replace the old 1854 one . Fascinating given that both this new one and the old ones are now closed. Fantastic glimpse at post war Britain, the people and technology of it's day. In 60 short years the past is already unrecognisable in the present. TG for YT.

They do show a mix of nature, travel and historical documentaries between 7-9pm some times. Whether they are of decent quality that's up to the viewers. Your example is very niche though in fairness.

I'm just fed up with David Attenborough. The nature stuff is relentless. There's endless variety on YT, not just things eating each other.

Last nights Exit Poll special on RTE Two, must be the first time news and current affairs for adults was on broadcast on the channel since about 2017 ?

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,665 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

Can’t remember if they did anything similar for the last election, I thought they just announced the poll on the Late Late. I was surprised they did the special at all tbh. They had Katie Hannon, David McCullagh and Jennifer Bray on the Late Late at the same time talking about the same thing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,015 ✭✭✭decor58

I don't understand why they don't use the News channel, it's available on Saorview, how widely available is it, is it on Virgin and Sky. I think l read on here that they had improved the picture quality recently and they could use the side bars for rolling graphics.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,205 ✭✭✭RoTelly

Correct RTÉ2 haven't had any News and Current Affairs on the channel for nearly a decade.

As for the Late Late, happened to join it during the Exit poll, seemed to be live from a different studio than the late late, with no audience, while was everything else pre-recorded.

Seems to me TLLS will be really lack any kind of controversy if it is to remain prerecorded for certain parts of the show.

It is available on on platforms, but it only really covers live programming from RTÉ ONE and then rotating repeats. When you axe bulletins on ONE and then axe all News from 2 you have little to show on the channel, I wonder why it wasn't selected to be axed, they clearly have no interest in TV news.

Was listening to radio 1 a while ago and they mentioned that morning Ireland wasn't been shown on the news channel, they were simulating rte 1 instead. I don't get the logic of showing the same thing on 2 different TV channels when they could have the TV coverage on rte 1 and radio coverage on the news channel.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,205 ✭✭✭RoTelly

I don't understand why on screen they don't provide the exit poll and also a tally tracker, but sure look at the mess of the news channel.

Odd Xmas press release from RTE. Highlighting years old productions of Parks & Recreation, Office UK, Father Ted and Frasier Christmas specials doesn't give much hope for the rest of the schedule (despite them mainly being on the Player)

Young Offenders Xmas special will air on RTE1, despite the newest series not being shown yet.

They did basically nothing last year - so virtually anything would be better. Will reserve judgement till the Christmas schedules come out, though.
