I was in Jonesborough today for some other bits and I ended up getting 10 x 20kg bags of supertherm for €100 in McGeoughs.

Same in woodies cost me €200 down south. I was delighted with that saving, it’s the coal I always buy, great heat from it.

How do you find the quality of the coal?

I don't necessarily need a tonne but that price is pretty good.

Whats this surcharge for? A number of delivery companies had temporarily stopped delivering coal to ROI from the North last week and as far as I am aware, this is still on hold. Ive spoken with two companies myself and neither could tell ne why they had stopped, only that it was coming from their bosses. I was on to Ryan in McGeoughs also, and he confirmed that a few companies had suspended their deliveries to the south and he didn't know why either.

Guy that delivered mine had broken english but he said something like can only bring certified stuff (cause Irish gov wants to clamp down on non duty paid coal) and they (couier) not going to check every pallet so might just stop doing the coal delivery.

He didn't seem to have full story either.

they gave fair warning of the price increase, not many couriers will be doing coal delivery and those that do will charge for well for it

They did to be fair ,have enough coal in anyway for the winter but just when yad think be saving few pound with price coal going down the delivery brings it back up ,but I suppose then too its still cheaper then buyn locally anyway.

I ordered a tonne a few weeks ago and also ordered another tonne last week.

Ordered Tuesday and arrived Thursday morning and still ovoids are €430 delivered.

I wonder have the pallet networks been feeling a bit of pressure from the revenue for allowing coal to free flow across the border? If I'm not mistaken, there's import duty due on it over a certain amount?

It will only be a matter of time until they do clamp down on it considering some of the northern sellers are now offering a delivered price which I imagine has increased the volume of stuff going across the border. They should have just left it the way it always was, i.e. customer arranges and pays for collection

It was part of the Good Friday agreement, so is legal once it's for personal use and attracts 5% vat for 1 tonne or less.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,506 ✭✭✭JVince

True, but its for personal use and you are meant to accompany the goods.

It was a grey area for organising 3rd party transport yourself but its quite clear that a commercial company cannot take delivery payment and deliver into the south without paying the relevant taxes.

It will go back to you organising and paying for delivery at arms length from the supplier of coal.

That was my understanding too. I've always paid the 5% to the coal merchant when buying in the North and arranged my own collection. I assumed the 5% was just NI VAT on solid fuel as the merchant would be marking it as a domestic walk-in sale as opposed to an export.

I can somewhat understand the hauliers pulling back as I imagine at this stage, there are truck loads of coal crossing the border to their central depot every night. Business to business pallets is the bread and butter for hauliers… every aspect of their operation is designed around this. A one-off pallet of coal up the side of a mountain to a guy who probably spent 2 weeks haggling the price over the phone ... that's only a headache and likely a loss. Even from a billing perspective, it's much much simpler for the haulier to send an invoice to coal warehouse or whoever at the end of the month for the 2,000 pallets they've delivered versus trying to contact 2,000 folk scattered throughout the South for payment.

    Went with Large Smokeless Ovoids - 1 Tonne 50 x 20Kg Bags from easyglow.ie

    €496 delivered.

Very happy with delivery and quality of fuel. One small niggle is that, despite being well wrapped on the pallet, some of the ovoids were wet.

Burns hot and for a loooong time when air flow turned down. Very little ash too.

Thanks for all the suggestions here.

just to go back to this again, first new bag all was good, but after opening another bag and it's like the first lot I had.

Has anyone else ordered the smokeless ovoids recently from coalwarehouse? If so, any chance you can pop up a picture what's left the next day in your fire. One other thing I've noticed when cleaning out the fire is there's a smell of rotten eggs, presumably sulphur but I've not noticed it before

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 464 ✭✭2forjoy

that would be Columbian sulphur. Anyone that believes the coal is smokeless because it says so on the bag , need a reality check.

I ordered a ton of Eco Stove red bag - in my opinion the best stove fuel, from Smokeless Coal Express.

    https://www.smokelesscoalexpress.com/

CJ was very helpful, ordered Monday - arrived Wednesday & well wrapped.

^^^ Agree very good coal. Not 100% sure its worth the premium over the green bags but the Eco Stove Red Bags produce a lot of heat and are as smokeless a fuel as I think you'll find anywhere other than maybe anthracite.

Wake me up when it's all over.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,092 ✭✭✭✭Discodog

The premium seems to vary a lot. It was only 30 euro per ton on Smokeless Coal Express

Hi anyone using Clickcoal site for Star fuels smokeless.? Free delivery on half tonne pallets @270 euro delivered all over Ireland.?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 562 ✭✭✭cathy427

I haven't but coal warehouse doing half ton of full ovoids for €255 delivered.

The click coal starfuel has calco mixed in with the ovoids

TThe ovoids from click coal are €325 delivered

Depending on your location McGuires might be cheaper again for ovoids.
