New Build: Location of outside tap

    Hi,

Our builder reached out asking whether we want an outside tap for our new build semi detached house. We definetly want one, but we're not sure of the location. The builder is offering 2 options: Back or side of the house.

We're thinking of going for side of the house as it will allow us to be closer to the driveway (to wash the car), but also not far away from the garden.

    Any thoughts?

You could put a second one in the garden.

Yes, but why pay for 2 if 1 is enough :) Trying to figure out whether there are any drawbacks for having one outside tap, or whether we are better off having 2.

Once the hose is long enough it doesn't make a difference.

I Just have the one that winds up and do that after use. Takes about 2 minutes to tidy up

I have two, one side and one on the rear. And the one on the side came into good use a few years ago when a neighbour's skip caught fire (they disposed of hot ash into it) and I was able to move the hose from the rear tap to the side and then use that to extinguish the fire. I was the hero for the week. 😁

    So yeah, two. 😂

Where ever you put them make sure to put out both a hot and cold tap.

I have one cold tap at each end of the house, but my house is long and thin so it makes sense.

Also, outdoor electrics! Finally got that sorted and can't believe I've "suffered" for years with extension cords running out of open doors, windows and catflap! The cat is happy too.

Once it's under a drain do you care?

You need it closer to where you're gonna need it.

Mine faces the back of my garden .

Could you hit the tap if bringing large items down the side of your house ( assuming a meow side entrance like mine)

Let me think??? 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 yep 7 outside taps. None would be traditional through the wall of the house outside taps. I just tapped off the mains supply coming into the house and ran black half inch standard pipe to where ever we wanted a tap.

So my thoughts on the question would be get your builder to show you the route of the mains supply coming across the property so if needed you can dig it up to add an extra tap without having to come out through house walls.

Wake me up when it's all over.

He could have 7 skips on fire😂

In passing do the regs not limit it to one off the rising main, in kitchen

Using decent fittings it cost about €30 per tap and on a long thin garden over an acre we were regularly running out 50m or more of hose pipe. So really I treat the extra taps as just permanent hose pipe.

Not a problem if someone starts to worry about regs as I can turn them all off by one valve and go over to using a pump to pump water from the river. Main use is watering plants.

I can't even run a pressure washer off the mains as the pressure is far too high and the hose blow off the fittings or burst. I have to fill a water tank and run a pressure washer off that. Same mains supply supplies houses about 100m higher up the hill so we have normal pressure + 100m. In the house we have a pressure reduction valve.

Wake me up when it's all over.
