After being quite worried about the state of the world in 2016 when Brexit and Trump were voted for, I actually refuse to let this ruin my mood this time around.

    1. The Americans deserve what the vote for. We can't blame China, or Russian bots, or the likes of Tucker Carlson anymore. They had four years with him, and four years without him, and decided it was better with him. "Oh but what about women's rights and minority rights?". Huge amounts of minorities and women voted for him. Let them look inside their own communities for the answers.
    2. We seem to labour under a belief that Americans are just like us. Just because they are predominately white and speak English does not mean they are anything like us at all. Maybe back in the 40's/50's but not anymore. Their ingrained mistrust of every elected official, and of their own neighbouring states, their insistence that the right to carry a gun outweighs the right to a child's life and their systemic class system leads to me thinking they have way more in common with Russia or India than they do with Europe anymore.

Set them adrift for the four years. I know it's not great for Ireland if he starts taxing the *rse out of the tech firms here, but to be honest, a Democrat could do that too.

On their own heads be it.

    A "gun nut"?

How do you figure? She owns a pistol, as does a very significant portion of the US population. The various policies she has proposed or advocated over the course of her career have not been what the firearms enthusiast community would consider supportive.

Harris set to concede in around four hours time apparently. Her campaign are briefing that she will call Trump shortly to concede and will make a short speech later.

Waiting for the stories of ''Elon Musk must have hacked the voting machines, if anyone could have, he could have.''

Compared to cost of living, economy or immigration,it looks like it's actually a niche one, one that gets far more attention than it warrants.

Abortion scored higher in the exit polls than immigration.

"Democracy" scored higher than the economy.

The majority of Americans stated they were better off or just the same economically as 4 years ago.

The peanuts will have to be picked out of this one for a while to come we may never get a conclusive answer why America have gone back to Trump again.

Her job also, is to certify the election, like it was Pence's job. It's her duty as VP to do that, so in theory she can refuse to. But I can't see that happening.

He did offer to give away all his money yesterday if Trump lost.

I don't know what I want more, Trump receiving a call from Kamala and being utterly statesman like, or Trump stopping short of calling her a ginormous LOOOOOOSSSEERRR!!!!!!!!

It genuinely could go either way.

Yes, he seemed ABSOLUTE in his belief Trump had won, he talked multiple times of how easy it would be to do it

He will be 82, think dictator for life isn't too appealing a role to divert your energy towards.

Will Trump be able to get a third term? It’s very unlikely.

But I can see him trying. The Supreme Court have removed any potential issue for him by granting him immunity so it’s low risk to him, and with all branches of government at his disposal, I’m sure every possible loophole will be looked at.

It will definitely be a test of their democracy.

I look forward to Trump telling putin to go home, saving the people of Gaza and lowering grocery prices and inflation

But not calling Joe Biden to concede the 2020 election is a bad look for him

"Just because they are predominately white and speak English does not mean they are anything like us at all."

We are more similar to any (Western?) European nation than to an American. I've been saying that or a long time on here. Consuming their media, visiting family there, and them coming to Ireland or us shopping in New York, does not make us similar to them whatsoever.

I notice this an awful lot being in an Asian country with mixes of foreigners all the time. My American friends are pretty much always the outliers in their behaviour, beliefs, and view of the world. I've been spending a lot of time with French people the last while and of course they're different, but a lot more "Irish" than the Americans.

That's not always a bad thing. I love Americans for their absolute support of entrepreneurship and taking chances. Irish and British friends treated my business failure like a bad smell while Americans treated it as a learning curve and were excited about my attempts. They didn't see it as a failure but a stepping stone. It's culturally just so different.

Because its a gross simplification and misrepresentation of the reality. As with most of Trumps' pronouncements.

The Modi friendly puppet tyrannical government was removed from power in August. While that government was tyrannical and anti-democratic it did keep a lid on some of the sectarian sections in the country. The replacement PM has struggled to bring the country under control post August resulting in some Islamic extremists increasing sectarian attacks on Hindus and Christians. This needs to be stopped. But it is not being perpetrated by the "Islamist Jihadi" government. Its more accurately described as an technocratic interim government struggling to gain control on the country, and has a Hindu minister.

But Donal said they were Islamist Jihadis so they must be.

I look forward to him building the wall with Mexico paying for it, banning Muslim immigrants, and creating the biggest jobs boom in US history.

    Wait… what year is it?

Trump cannot run again and he won't. Enough of this rubbish about him overturning the constitution and being allowed to do it. Honestly who's the conspiracy theorists now.

He's unlikely to have all branches in two years though. It generally flips to the opposite in the midterms so would need to move quickly to get anything done, and that give less chance of being subtle about it.

More likely that he dies and Vance takes over. Then the Democrats have yet another fight against an incumbent next time round rather than it being two newbies fighting for the top job in 2028.

It might be an indicator to the Florida representatives and State level personnel, though, on what might be important if they want to get re-elected on the simple plurality basis of their election, even if the amendment didn't reach the 60% threshold.

I think you’re giving Americans as a whole too much credit. Not saying what you wrote isn’t true but I guarantee you there are huge demographics (older generation, young males, the majority of the white population) who would never vote for a woman as president.

Nah, she was a terrible candidate.

If he does, I want my money back. I just gave the b*st*rds €160 last month. Daylight robbery.

Am Yisrael Chai - Bring them home.

An interesting way to look at it, we could have a lot of changed republican minds in the next 2 years

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,950 ✭✭✭Hande hoche!

Yep, consistently polling as the lowest rated VP. The puff pieces about vibes and the astroturfed coconut memes go only so far. There is a theory that if Joe had stepped aside earlier, she would have had a chance to develop her "brand". Not too sure about that.

I doubt we will see him try a third term, although he has the supreme court at his disposal to make a creative interpretation of rules if he requires it.

More likely you will see him move to anoint a successor, perhaps his son.

All it takes is for him to roll out of the scratcher with a mad notion in his head. He's bad for Europe and it follows anything bad for Europe is also bad for Ireland.

I can't get over the numbers of Irish people who arse lick and adore this orange tinted excuse for a human.

I think ultimately Trump economically will do what is good for his doners. And his voters will believe whatever he does is for them while being royally screwed over
