Exactly. Trump was bang on the money in his last term about rich EU nation's not meeting their 2% NATO target. And that was pre war in Ukraine. Everyone laughed at trump but if European NATO members were hitting those targets Ukraine could have received a lot more aid.

With America tied up in a posturing match with China over Taiwan it was always important the EU had a strong military for global security but we were too busy getting into bed with Russia and China.

To be fair when we had the referendum (which was unequivocally passed) there was huge traction with the approach like this. The Repeal jumper plebs garnered a serious audience. For me it was real conformation we have become a real secular society guided by our own knowledge. The place of religion is still much more ever-present in the US. Abortion was/is an emotive subject here but across the pond it's different level.

After being quite worried about the state of the world in 2016 when Brexit and Trump were voted for, I actually refuse to let this ruin my mood this time around.

1. The Americans deserve what the vote for. We can't blame China, or Russian bots, or the likes of Tucker Carlson anymore. They had four years with him, and four years without him, and decided it was better with him. "Oh but what about women's rights and minority rights?". Huge amounts of minorities and women voted for him. Let them look inside their own communities for the answers.
2. We seem to labour under a belief that Americans are just like us. Just because they are predominately white and speak English does not mean they are anything like us at all. Maybe back in the 40's/50's but not anymore. Their ingrained mistrust of every elected official, and of their own neighbouring states, their insistence that the right to carry a gun outweighs the right to a child's life and their systemic class system leads to me thinking they have way more in common with Russia or India than they do with Europe anymore.

Set them adrift for the four years. I know it's not great for Ireland if he starts taxing the *rse out of the tech firms here, but to be honest, a Democrat could do that too.
