Hi, I would like to collect some acorns and plant them.

Does anyone know of a good place in County Galway or County Sligo where I might find them?

    Regards,

    D

I don't think it has been a great year for acorns, you may find a few but we had hardly any after a good year last year.

Find some accessible, deciduous woodland and look for oak trees, they mostly still have a few leaves so you would be able to identify them. Or park land where they have a few oak trees

Even on a good year though the acorns will have fallen by now and taken by animals so its possibly a bit late. Its really just a matter of going out, identifying oaks and searching. Apparently Barna Woods in Galway has massive oaks, so that may be your best bet.

You could also lift some small oak saplings and plant them.

About 10 years ago, my wife got the idea that she wanted to plant an oak tree in our garden (in a pot).

I went out to the local woods where I knew there were oaks, but there were no acorns to be found.

She posted on a local "free to a good home" Facebook group, and after some messages back and forth, that evening someone posted an envelope of acorns through the letterbox.

One took, and we now have a 3 foot oak tree on the patio.

If you ever get near Longford, I can give you some that germinated this year. I have some acorns as well, but as already said, a poor crop this year and they're quite small.

Hi thanks. What part of Longford are you in?

    Thanks.
