"Hoodwinking" and convincing people about what you are running (whether it's true or not) is the definiton of running a successful and effective election campaign.

Trump managed to energise people by going on podcasts like Rogan and Theo Von et al and probably convinced people who would usually not bother voting into going to the ballot box. He said outlandish and ridiculous things that got people riled up and WANTING to vote. His tactics were undoubtedly dishonest but effective.

The Democrats spend a good portion of the campaign trying to convince the American public that a decripit old man was "sharp as a tack" before unceremoniously dumping him after being embarrassed by his opponent on television. Then they had Harris going on The View and other programmes of that ilk to pander to the voting base that she already had locked in. They did nothing to energise or motivate new voters. They also had Kamala Harris, who was the sitting VP, saying she was new blood and she would improve the economy, when everyone knew she had been part of the reigime that had the economy where it sat. She picked the blandest VP to accompany her.

Sexism, if it played a part, was negligible in comparison to how bad their strategy was.

Confirmation bias has played a huge role in this election, grass roots lefties, main stream media, and even some posters on forum threads, have all lived in their own fantasy political world. The people of America, from all ethnic groups, have shown their support for Trump and Trumps policies, including his stance on wokness and mainstream media. Trumps convictions mean nothing to his supporters, because they don't believe they are valid, they do their own research and simply don't believe the mainstream media headlines or bias courts.

In an ideal world the left/woke would look inwards, and evaluate their own stance and beliefs, but my guess is we will just have a bout of hysterical "I don't believe it" or "How could they elect a convicted felon" rhetoric. This was demonstrated on the Sky coverage in the early hours, quite comical to watch. At the end of the day its results from these new policies that count, and hopefully the fruit they bring will be so obvious and undeniable that political change will naturally follow.

So what should we do? Mollycoddle and align ourselves with fascists?
Unlike your side, we are decent people and victory at any cost is not the goal. We have something called morals, scruples and decency.

Trumps support from minorities surged from 2020.

Trump is married to an immigrant. He supports legal migration. Stop trying, like all media does, to make people against illegal immigration sound like they hate all immigrants.

Success is achieving something through means other than lies and deception.

You'll be disgusted when you hear what Trump said about Mexicans.

You people really need to give up on the fascists thing!

Come on, line up some fascists from history and compare them with Trump and then we can see if he's really a fascist.

Did the hispanics who saw a surge in support for him and see him flip loads of counties near the Mexican border not hear his comments?

Well put. I'd have no time for Trump myself. But certainly, as someone over here on the sidelines, wouldn't have been a supporter of Harris either.

Both are terrible. Could be argued one worse than the other. But jesus, the tribalism and loud voices on social media (on both sides) was absolutely nauseating.

A complete detachment from reality. And on the Democrats part, an ignorance of the more rational voter, who was drowned out by fervent support and passionate calls from celebrities and a desire by others to be seen to be part of a trend.

"I don't like Trump therefore I'm for Harris, and my condescending posts and impassioned pleas will generate likes and shares on social media"

The fact then Harris didn't appear to even thank the thousands of people waiting on her after a loss further convinced me of my thought of how shallow and fickle the campaign was.

She could have taken it on the chin, made a speech and urged Democrats to weather the storm and they'll be back again. There's no point doing it in a day's time. It evokes an image of her going off to sulk and giving the finger to those who spent hours waiting for her. Some candidate. (Don't take that to mean I view Trump positively either) Sh..show all round.

    Yep fully agree.

America is a very divided country and very different in large parts than Ireland or Britain.

There's a lot of complexities and nuanced layers.I was a contractor for the military over there for a few years,at the time you could take it they were 95% Republican.I am Irish and would not have been supportive of GW Bush who was president at the time.I kept my mouth shut and listened,I learned a lot and could see things from their side a bit but still largely disagreed.

Towards the end of my time there I felt I could try to put my own views across a bit.I wasn't going to change anybodys mind but at least we could have a discussion. I learned it was better craic to steer clear of that stuff and have a few beers instead.

People are people, they are largely sound.

If you get your info from a left (almost far left) echo chamber Internet Forum on the other side of the world I'm not sure how much of a broad understanding you're going to have of the situation.

This has played out here over the last year or 18 months.Thats not an opinion, its all laid out in black and white if anyone can be bothered to read back.

Anyway, the world won't end (just as it didn't last time) and Trump won't do a fraction of the stuff he was spouting on about (same as last time)

The real danger is JD Vance.Hes just as bad as Trump but smoother and smarter.the Democrats need to start planning now and be a lot more clever about it.

A successful election campaign is a different story. You know that.

You should tell MSNBC, right now they are saying one of the main reasons Kamela lost was because of identity politics.

Issues they brought up were transgender women in women's sports, college protests, defending police and curtailing free speech.

I was alive for his previous time behind the Resolute Desk, his actions when he was supposed to hand back power. He didn't even bother turning up for Biden's inauguration etc etc etc etc The most recent fascistic hatred spouted on the campaign trail. The man is vile.

He said he wanted to deport ALL Muslims.

    That includes legal and illegal.

Woke as it is now characterised is an invention of the right. Designed as a bogeyman and it has worked. But does not exist as its portrayed and was only ever used by a tiny element to describe themselves. Anything that is somehow empathetic to an "other" is now characterised as woke. A catch all term designed to capture as many as possible "What or who dont you like.. oh thats just woke", and that way everyone can have something to blame on the "woke"

Trump can sell a message and keep it simple, Obama did it, Bill Clinton did it. Charisma helps as well, command the room. Whatever people say about Trump he does that, he makes people believe and sells that message. That seems to be the core of American politics.

I don't think that sort of politician would work in Ireland, they would just laugh at that type of politician.

Irish people believe Republican voters are all stupid.

Perhaps the penny is dropping that all Democratic voters are stupid as well.

I thought it might be that if Pelosi steps down someone might start investigating her net worth of 250m when her salary has been 170-230k. I reckon Biden was just trying to sabotage the harris campaign by wearing a maga hat, calling people garage, wanting to smack Republicans on the arse etc

You are by and far, not alone.

The part of me that cares about the Americans and in particular those I have befreinded over the years, hopes that this collective mistake of the voting public will not hurt them badly. But the old history student in me is somewhat certain that they will regret this choice yet again.

If Trump carries out what he indicated he will we can look forward to (Not)

A Global recession as trump starts a trade embargo on overseas goods.

The 'Russian Peace' imposed on Ukraine.

Destabilization of Russian border countries especially the Baltic states

Multinationals leaving or not investing in Ireland with the loss of jobs and our balance of payments impaired.

    A blank cheque for Israel

    Rising interest rates globally

And one would have to be monumentally stupid to not see that. And when it happens they'll be shouting and screaming and blaming everyone else but themselves.
