Great news for middle and south American drug cartels, ordinary people have nowhere to run away from them.

    This too shall pass.

thats such a small sample size its insignificant.

It's not done via 'our system' of a referendum. It's done via parliament and would need the support of some Democratic states.

You are saying the democratic party would be far right in Ireland? What exactly economic or socially would make them far right?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,813 ✭✭✭Patrick2010

In addition to being a left wing party they are also communists, marxists and facists. A lot of posters here seem to take their cue from Trump, be as triumphalist as possible, no class. Harris mightn't have been the strongest candidate but how can anyone actually like Trump?. He lies constantly, indulges in vulgar abuse and name calling, has a history of stiffing contractors, a convicted felon and rapist.

Lets see if he'll carry out his promise to pardon all the convicted J6rs. He accused the Democrats of weaponising the DOJ but you can bet he'll be trying to go after anyone that crossed him the last 4 years. Aileen Cannon will get a promotion for her work in delaying the prosocution for the taking of classified documents. Which he probably has still possesion of.

Also in 2016 there was genuine fear as to what he would do in the job.

Now we know it will be very little except staying out of prison.

It really say a lot about America when what looks likes happened from result is a not insignificant number of men of all races who didn't like Trump just didn't bother voting because it would have meant voting for a woman.

If Baron gets 1 vote per foot in height, he would win 2028/32 and 36.

Fat lot of good all the celeb campaigning did for the democrats. There's about 5 pages of this thread dedicated to Taylor Swift supporting Harris as if it was a golden ticket. Celebrities have clearly lost a lot of their influence, thankfully.

Such a mess from the Democrats. They had the opportunity to line up a strong candidate the moment after Biden's election in 2020. Everyone assumed he would be a one term president and it was clear as his term progressed that he was not up to a second term. I was shocked at how frail he looked during his State visit to Ireland in April 2023.

Harris was an anonymous Vice President and achieved very little. She wasn't good enough to be the candidate a few months ago and then suddenly she's the candidate a few weeks out from the election. How did they expect her to win?

Democrats only have themselves to blame, tbh.

2 is not a pattern when the 2 candidates were awful.

Trump would have won in 2020 if Covid didn't happen.

Being a gun owner does not make you far right, in europe or anywhere.

the more I hear right/left wing on here, the more I'm convince people have no clue what they mean.

The democrats are centre-left. The republicans are centre-right.

4 years ago, a poster on here said that the US election is the greatest reality show on earth. This year it didn’t fail to disappoint.

The first female POTUS will be a Republican. It's seemingly to much of a stretch to ask your typical undereducated American man to vote for a woman that's also a Democrat.

No irish party is offering Iron Clad support for genocide in Gaza like Biden did.

My hope is that the Americans will survive their choice long enough to learn from it. Europe had to learn this lesson the very hard way.

What little comfort there is, is that there is no ambugiuty at all. The Americans clearly picked Trump this time, there is little in the way of EC shenanigans. The questions are now "Why?" and "Can they preserve their democracy for another 2-4 years?"

I hope this at least gives Europe as a whole a much needed impitious to take up the mantle of leading the Free World. We cannot rely on the Americans anymore. They were given a very simple choice between a moderate politician and convicted felon man-child who has repeatedly shown everyone how bad of a presidential pick he is, and they picked him anyway.

Much like the last time, the US is now going to be essentially headless for at least 4 years to come. That is the best case scenario, assuming that Project 2025 gouls who want to be in his cabinet are as feckless as your typical MAGA loon.

Oh and to all of our "centrist" friends. Just because the Americans made a very stupid choice this week, does not by virtue of their numbers make that choice any less stupid.

    Sad it's all over now.

I don't think I'll ever be as into an election as when Trump was running though.

I'm done with American politics now as a hobby/interest. It was fun seeing all the goings-on, it was drama/chaos every day for the first four years of his administration. But it takes up too much of my brain space and I can't fathom how 50% of a highly advanced nation can get sucked into this charlatan.

As another poster said, Harris was an extremely competent, experienced woman who was part of a very successful administration and there is no reason she should not be president. I know she is not Obama who oozed charisma and to be honest that is all Trump has...he is an entertainer. He is like Maximus Decimus Meridius in Gladiator after cutting off the head of some poor auld soul and then shouting to the crowd "Are you not entertained?!" That gets the blood going to the masses...and they all cheer. I fully understand also he's their man. It's a team sport and you will never see a Liverpool fan cheering on Man Utd.

I do think inflation f**ked Harris even though it was a global problem and exacerbated by corporate greed with these ar*hes ramping up prices because they could. The administration got it under control a lot faster than the majority of other countries but people do feel it in their pockets, hell, I do as well, but I blame Putin for the war ramping gas prices and COVID for f**king up supply chains and corporate greed. Anyway, Trump is going to do fk all for the working Joe.

I see also from all Trump supporters, oh it's all the name calling and it's unfair and that's what got them wound up, it's so unfair they keep calling us racist, etc. but let's get a few things straight.

Being Racist It's not the Dems calling him a racist, it's the RACISTs calling Trump a racist...you don't see the racists (Proud Boys, 3 percenters, Boogaloo Boys etc. etc.) waving Harris flags, you don't see the Nazis waving swastikas waving Harris or Biden flags but they do wave Trump flags. So the racist Nazis see something in Trump; he is their man. You may not like it, but that's a fact.

Being a Misogynistic sexual predator Just convicted of civil liability of sexual assault, best friends with Jeffrey Epstein, multiples of women accusing him of sexual assault, "grab em by the p**sy" walking into dressing rooms of teenage pageants etc. etc.

Being dumb as a rock suggested injecting bleach for COVID, suggested they buy Greenland, thought you could nuke hurricanes, doesn't know how tariffs work 🙂 I could go on for days here, but he is as dumb as a rock.

Just a general arhole* again, could go on for days but generally mocking disabled journalists, mocking soldiers who got captured, refusing to go to a World War I or II graveyard to pay respects to fallen soldiers because it was raining, again, etc. etc.

*Cheat and Fraud too many convictions of fraud and business malpractice to list here

America can have him and enjoy the next few years of the pure and utter chaos...He will be unhinged and unshackled. I think Ukraine will continue, the EU (or Ukraine) will not allow the surrender of land which Trump will want. His utter bullshit about solving it in a day is a joke and is basically for Ukraine to give up!! What I do fear for is the Middle East. He will give Israel license to do whatever they want (not that they are holding back anyway) to continue their genocide and murder of the Palestinians. Settlers in the West Bank will ramp up and he will go after Iran.

For me, I think I will not be looking at American politics anymore (not in the medium term anyway) It's too frustrating and I can't get my head around it. Very long post, people probably won't read this, but needed to vent a bit.

I do think history will categorize Trump as the worst presidents ever and person, and it won't even be close. Scholars will write books on how he managed to pull the wool over people's eyes for so long.

    In the US context.

Anyway it's hard to really compare when most EU states don't have binary national elections like the US and UK.

To be fair though there's thick to go around on both sides it's pretty clear a fair chunk of his voter base are a bit thick and xenophobia is very much in play.

That Harris got so many votes even though she's a non entity and her running mate seems nice but just as much of a non entity shows the Dem's failures. Like 2016 it was as much they lost as Trump won. If Trump were up against an Obama or Bill Clinton, or a GW Bush for that matter he'd be screwed imho.

"The greatest political movement of all time." FFS give us a break Donald.

It just show how fecking desperate Americans currently are.

What's he going to do? Scrap healthcare? Kick out all the migrants. Good luck with that.

The problem is American skilled workers won't get out of bed for less than $40 an hour. So China steps in with alternative product.

It's absolutely hard to see a pattern.

Clinton was beaten in the electoral college and won the popular vote. Trump won that one as he was something different and the country wanted a change from the norm at that time.

Harris lost the electoral college and the popular vote. Trump won because he is more popular.

Nothing to do with being a woman.

You see it as it's because American's don't think women are able. That's insulting towards Americans and women that you ignore all the other plethora of reasons for her loss and immediately think it's because of sexism.

While sexism still exists in some scenarios, not everything bad that happens to women is sexism.

Your think a Republican US will turn its back on Israel? Do some history.

In fact, Trump was loved by Israel during his first term.

Nothing will change. The US are making a killing supplying weapons

I don't think it says it all in fairness: Trump was massively handicapped by covid in 2020 for one thing…

Just their culture. They have this blowhard excessive, cinematic hero complex thing.

Well represented by the classic team america theme song.

Of which some missed the irony, and others doubled down on.

I agree. Both times Trump won the presidency, it was against female opponents. He lost to a male opponent. Democrats should have taken that lesson on board.

Now they likely have the house, senate, WH and Supreme Court… will Trump start the process to remove the 2 term limit?

Trump didn't cause COVID but his pathetic reaction to it caused him to lose the last election. Doesn't matter to him now, he got his second turn in the end.

The global tone of politics is now solidly right. It will be interesting to see how that manifests itself in Europe and here too.
