My lawn is looking more like how it typically would in September 🙂 a world of difference from this time last year where it was a wet mess after the flooding we had in Cork in October.

Nope, additionally to the Dooks record outlined above from 2015, here's some other noteworthy November temps over the years. 17C isn't that uncommon in November at least once somewhere in the country. Valentia had more than 19.5C for 2 consecutive days on 13th/14th November in 1989…

I might very well have to do it but we'll see anyway

Totally different to how it was in coastal Donegal/Sligo though, heavy wetting drizzle and visibility no more than a few hundred metres the whole time I was there. I've been back in Dublin since Thursday and it's just been cloudy with the odd spell of light drizzle, but mostly dry with good visibility

That's a fine looking lawn. Mine is a patchy weedy mess and the bit of grass in it is thin and weak. Even though it's been largely dry here on the east coast it's still fairly damp so the lawn hasn't been able to dry out, it could really do with a mow before the weather changes though or it'll be some state for the winter. Absolutely no drying out whatsoever despite the lack of precipitation.

Getting a max of 18 on Wednesday and an over night low of 15. A Summers day essentially.

Is there any sign of a good hard cold snap “to kill off the germs” on the horizon?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 126 ✭✭zisdead

Do people still believe that myth after 4 years of COVID which shows precisely zero respect for the seasons?

Both times I caught it, one was in spring and the other high summer.

A good hard cold snap would more than likely cause more illness rather than kill off the germs as you mention. Common colds spread when more people are within closer distances to each other, example being, when it's cold, you, and others are more likely to be indoors, increasing the risk of spreading any potential virus. Also, it is a misconception that "Cold" kill off germs and virus', it's the opposite. It would be extreme temperatures that kill the aforementioned.

Anyway, to answer your question, No, mild outlook for the mid term outlook. In fact, you could plan a picnic for tomorrow

These last few days are reminding me of our summer; 12 or 13 degrees, calm and endless cloud. I'm not complaining this time because it's been very good for early November, and it gets dark at 5 anyway. It's perfect for outdoor jobs and exercise! It's very damp but I can just about deal with that. Having said all that, I would love to see just a little bit of sun 😳

Reading the farming commentary from yesterday.

The dullest location in Ireland in the last week was Casement Aerodrome, with 1.9 hours of sunshine (10% of average), and just up the road the sunniest location was Dublin Airport, with 5.8 hours of sunshine (29%).

That's wild. I'm south side and i have genuinely not seen the sun in 10 days.

The clouds are meeting the road and everything is constantly wet even though it hasn't actually rained in a week.

Same here. A rotten day in D18 even though it’s just drizzle

There was one good day last week, Wednesday. Clouds parted early enough and was a nice sunny day, and that must be where most of the 5 hours of sunshine came from. One of those days where cloud was still all around but the sun managed to stay in the clearing much of the time. Just checked and yes, 4+ hours of sunshine at the airport that day.

Absolutely horrific ever since. I can't believe all the people loving the dull cloudy damp drizzly misty weather (for those experiencing that is, seems the west is faring better). It's mild alright but nah, it's getting miserable. Another week potentially to come of this too. If not even longer if the resurgence of the high pressure next week also is a cloud fest.

Horrible misty drizzle started again as I type.

Stockholm syndrome on here for some 🤣. Different strokes I guess.

I haven't seen the sun in well over a week, not even for a single second. At least it's largely dry and mild tho.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,213 ✭✭✭yagan

Was drizzly in Cork harbour this morning but a slight wind after a week of calm waters.

I'm turning off the heating tonight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 389 ✭✭Thunder87

Miserable day in north Dublin today with heavy drizzle and mist/fog. More similar today to the weather I was describing we had on the west coast last week.

I think it's 9-10 days since I last saw the sun, grim though I haven't needed to use the heating even once so far this year so it's saving on bills at least

It's like groundhog day. Same thing day after day. Though last night there was clear skies for a couple of hrs to break the monotony. But of course woke up to yet another cloudy day..........

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,195 ✭✭✭adocholiday

Light rain in South Wicklow all morning but not showing on the radar. The sort of rain that saturates everything. Not a breath of wind though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,594 ✭✭✭esposito

I can report that there is a small bit of blue sky visible. Much improved here in south Dub now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 792 ✭✭✭Robwindstorm

I couldn't believe how clear the sky was last night, glistening with stars, and then woke to a dark cloud blanket.

Bill, you should meet squarecircles for a pint ! 😉

I was looking at rainfall levels on the East coast and there is a stark difference between this year and last year.

For example, Dublin Airport. 2023 rainfall in brackets

    June: 30.4mm (49)
    July: 37.7mm (149)
    August: 36.6mm (119)
    September: 59.6mm (134)
    October: 47.8mm (125)

    Different world.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

I’m not a doctor but I often heard the older folks, - more in tune with the weather/natural world/seasons - praise a “good hardy frost” for killing off the germs.

Personally I much prefer cold chilled air and a bright blue sky when out and about than muggy air with no wind, and low grey cloudy skies.
