Nice! I was trying not to overdo the downloading this month for the first month of no limits but good to hear of someone testing it to the extreme!

I will stop holding back now and use my average 1TB. Lots of things in the queue to download.

I wouldn't fret too much about it. Can always switch back to three. Was using three 20 pay as you go every month for around two years with it with no issues on the 5G modem.

So far so good though with 48 which is the same company as three

@Murt2024 interested in learning about the 5G router you’re using.

What make/model? Price? Did you buy it online?

Asking as I’d be interested in trying it out myself.

I've got the Hauwei Mc801A which i got second hand, it is three but seems to be unlocked to any network with 48 working fine after changing the APN settings. I got from CEX a good while ago but any of the ones here should do really. Probably better off going for the unlocked ones to be sure and a lot of the ones here are newer models than what i have i think

Just ran another speed test there on LAN. There is a huge difference having a proper 5G modem compared to just using it off the phone. There is two LAN ports on it.

How long does it take to get a 48 SIM?

I ordered one on Oct 14, got the acknowledgement email but still have not received it.

Thanks @Murt2024 for info on modem and to @biebiebie for posting the question I was going to ask.

Only took me three working days, you should follow up we them if not there Tuesday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,292 ✭✭✭spakman

yeah, should have it by now, I'd follow up with them or just order another. make sure to put your eircode on it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,725 ✭✭✭Kaisr Sose

    @Murt2024 @spakman

Thanks for replies. Two weeks now so I ordered a new one. I was using my eircode to populate address so they have the correct address.

Are they early to contact if I do lnt receive the reordered SIM?

You will have to go on 48.ie website and wait for the chatbot to pop up on the right hand side as far as I know. It's my usual way of contacting them.

I have contacted them.…they seem disinterested. Unbelievably bad customer service. Are the replies you get from a human or a bot?

I was on the €7.99 plan - automatic regular direct debits for years. Then my card recently expired and I was issued a new one. Instead of letting me know the payment request had failed due to the details changing, they just kept silent - pretty deliberate I suspect - and now say my plan has expired and I need a new one. Bummer.

Seems they don't create a regular direct debit authority with the bank, they must enter your card details including date of expiry and pac number every time, which seems like an incredibly dangerous way to do things from a hacking perspective and their handling of card details.

I feel like a right mug for not realising that there wasn't a proper direct debit facility in place.

Update: After writing the above I got an email from 48 saying my payment had failed - this is days later - and among other things, said "update your card details to reactivate your plan"

When I logged into the 48 app and via their website, I was told I did not have an active plan and a prominent buy plan fr €12.99 button was displayed.

    48 renew button.jpg

Before getting the email I was so tempted to go 'ah feck it' and press it as it seemed inevitable, but I thought I would hold off and try contacting them.

The app proved useless, but l logged into the website and updated my card details, which sent a €0.00 payment request to my bank for authorisation. I couldn't see any option to continue my current plan, only a 'Buy Plan' option under the 'My48 Account' menu. So I tried that, and could scarcely believe my eyes that there were a list of plan options including the original €7.99 for 100 GB one, so clicked on that and went throught the bank payment validation process and of course selected the auto-renew option.

    So panic over.

If you use the 'Gift Shop', the plans available to buy for your specific SIM should be listed as options to select (no need to be logged in to My48).

    https://48.ie/gift-shop

It's unlikely they would withdraw the 7.99 plan from your SIM for missing one renewal payment, it would be at least 6 months before they'd attempt that.

However don't buy the more expensive plans because they won't let you return to €7.99!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,511 ✭✭✭beachhead

No need for panic.48 plans remain dormant for 180 days(from the last payment) before you lose them.

Anyone else on the 7.99 plan notice speeds at busy times down to a crawl….or are they throttling to stop streaming?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,303 ✭✭✭waynescales1

I'm on the €10.99 plan and I have the same problem. I reckon it's just a bandwidth/congestion issue at peak times.

    They give me the option.....

Tried 5g and didn't notice any difference so went back to the 7.99 plan

You got lucky - one of the old T&Cs was that uf you switched to a more expensive plan you wouldn't be allowed to switch back to the cheaper one.

I'm about to be out of data with 4 days left on the 7.99 plan, anyone know if I can just buy a new plan and have it start straight away?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 904 ✭✭✭PeterDuggan

I don't think so. They prefer to sell you overpriced data top-ups. Ask friends to Flexi share you some or use your Safe or "spot me" .

Try swapping minutes for data, AFAIK it's 100 minutes for 1GB up to a max of 3GB.

Is it worth moving from the 7.99 plan to the 5g 12.99 plan?

Is there any difference in speeds when there's heavy traffic?

My 7.99 can slow to almost a halt at times but get speeds between 40-80 when going good.

also, when they say unlimited, what the cut off for fair usage?

I'm at 500GB with no issues so far this month. I've been using a three sim card pay as you go for years with no issues. Last month i went to 4TB with 48 and no issues. Getting 400 down/35 up.

So it looks like 48 now allow the sending of premium texts looking at the link below. If so then I know of a few people on 48 who will be delighted they'll be able to enter a certain radio money competition.

    Yep, thank for that

just entered today FM cash giveaway with it

Mrs Cushtie is travelling to Canaries and last few times she was abroad her phone would not roam. That was fine as I was with her and I'm on three so no issues roaming.

She is going alone this time.

She will need data for whatapp, Ryanair app, banking apps etc.

She has a iPhone that supports E Sim. Could I purchase a data plan from an Esim provider like lyca or any other recommded provider and it is easy to set up when you land. She is very un technical 😂

I know there was a discussion on here about this before but can't find it.
