Being "big into the environment, very vocal about climate change" doesn't make one "far left".

I know some bolted on Thatcherites that are "big into the environment".

I have to quote this again, it's so apalling.

This is an absolutely outrageous claim and if you don't provide some links to back this up, I have to assume that this statement has no basis in reality. And fairly lively if you please.

A former President of the US isn't qualified to be President of the US?

I used to be a lifeguard. I was terrible. 3 people drowned during my time at Acme Inc Pool and Leisure Centre. However, as an experienced lifeguard, I should be a shoe in for the position that just opened up in my local I Can't Believe Its Not Butlins camp.

What happened to being against abortion in all circumstances?

Now you seem to be OK with it to save the life of the mother?

    Which is it?

Look, there aren't formal qualifications for the job of President in the sense that a practicimg lawyer has to have passed his/her Bar examinations.

But, if you have already been twice impeached (a record), have been convicted on 30+ felony counts, and have been involved in inciting a riot to prevent the election of you successor, that's enough to disqualify you in political terms. After all it is a political judgement for voters, not a judgement on a professional qualification.

It appears that the swing in the polling towards Harris in recent days is largely driven by the "undecided" group breaking her way by a significant margin over Trump.

That is what happened in Trumps favour in 2016 - Trump got 60%+ of the undecided bucket on polling day and that was the difference.

It seems that might be happening for Harris this time around based on the available data.

NYT/Siena who are one of the highest rated polling groups are showing that these late deciding voters in the swing states are going for Harris by 58% to 42% overall.

If that holds true , then Harris could hold the Swing states that Biden won in 2020.

It’s the daily mail so let’s not get too excited - but it does highlight the incredible tight rope walk Harris has to negotiate to try and keep everyone “happy” - in contrast I wouldn’t be surprised if Trump unveiled a plan for a Trump hotels tourist resort in Gaza - that’s how little he has to worry about certain groups of ethnic voters

So I actually went to the effort to find the cases you're referring to. They were in 2021 so before the actual legislation you've been complaining about. One instance was a fetal anomaly that simply led to the death. Two involved comfort care but they didn't survive. The final two simply were never gonna survive outside of the womb. In addition, no details are given on why the abortions were sought but in all likelihood, there were medical reasons to do so cause that's why such abortions generally happen. It has nothing to do with the legislation you are outraged about btw. No such cases were reported in 2022.

It is literally the same thing, an abortion.

I don't think you'll find any definition of abortion that includes the term elective.

Sorry, it was between 2019 and 2022. There are no limits on abortion in Minnesota. And a poster here called Walz a "nice guy".

Catholic newspapers don't appear to be acceptable sources, so here's one that quotes from the Minnesota Department of Health reports:

    https://thedispatch.com/article/claims-about-children-born-alive-after-abortion-attempts-in-minnesota-are-true/

I just fail to see the appeal of Walz and Harris. I can understand people hating Trump, but I don't understand what is appealing about the other ticket.

I'm being misread here (my fault)

The guy works in politics alongside a very left wing European party, he's specifically involved in the environmental side. Normally I'd just say he's going off the rails but recently I've noticed online commentators who are very left or "far/fringe" left repeating Trump talking points.

Are you at all uncomfortable with there being no limits on abortion in Minnesota?

You also don't understand the definition of what is abortion

Voter fraud is a complete red herring.

While you can find examples of individuals who try to vote multiple times, or vote when they're not registered/entitled to vote, these are absolutely tiny numbers compared to the hundreds of thousands of actual geniune votes that are not counted in every single election in the US, often due to deliberate tactics by one side or the other, to disenfranchise voters.

Election fraud has actually happened many times, and the US has a really long and detailed history of the struggles between corrupt election officials, and advocates for free and open elections.

Jim Crowe laws for example, were mostly aimed at corrupting of the election process to prevent black voters from accessing their votes

    Redistricting, (Jerrymandering)

Bulk Purging election registers to remove legitimate voters likely to vote for one party over another

People sent to election centres to 'challenge' voters deliberately to intimidate and disenfranchise voters

Vote buying schemes, such as the one Elon Musk is doing right now with his 'lottery'

In fact, here just some examples out of thousands of election fraud that happened in the US over the past half century

    1. 1972 - Watergate Scandal

    • Political operatives linked to President Nixon’s reelection campaign attempted to spy on the Democratic National Committee. This interference in the democratic process led to Nixon’s resignation.

    2. 1982 - Chicago, Illinois (Operation Greylord)

    • A federal investigation exposed widespread corruption involving judges, politicians, and other public officials who engaged in election tampering and vote buying.

    3. 1984 - Arkansas (Voter Registration Manipulation)

    • In Arkansas, political operatives manipulated voter rolls to favor certain candidates, registering fictitious voters and disenfranchising others.

    4. 1987 - Kentucky (Absentee Ballot Fraud)

    • Organized bribery of voters in Kentucky by political operatives included filling out absentee ballots fraudulently and influencing elections through absentee ballot tampering.

    5. 1997 - Miami, Florida Mayoral Election

    • Fraud involving over 5,000 fraudulent absentee ballots was exposed, resulting in the annulment of the election. A judge found that operatives coordinated to sway the mayoral race through these ballots.

    6. 2000 - St. Louis, Missouri (Tampering with Poll Hours and Rolls)

    • An organized attempt to extend poll hours in specific districts to influence results led to legal challenges. Investigations uncovered tampering and irregularities in voter rolls.

    7. 2002 - New Hampshire (Phone Jamming Scandal)

    • In the 2002 Senate race, Republican operatives jammed phone lines for Democratic “get-out-the-vote” efforts, which was later deemed a coordinated attempt to disrupt the election process.

    8. 2004 - East St. Louis, Illinois (Vote Buying)

    • Local officials and political operatives were found guilty of buying votes to secure victories in local elections. The scheme involved cash payments and favors in exchange for votes.

    9. 2005 - Milwaukee, Wisconsin (Election Equipment Tampering)

    • An organized effort by election workers led to tampering with election machines and absentee ballot handling, prompting a federal investigation.

    10. 2008 - ACORN Voter Registration Fraud

    • While ACORN itself was not a case of election fraud, the large-scale falsification of voter registration forms by a coordinated group of workers prompted concerns about potential election manipulation.

    11. 2009 - Troy, New York (Absentee Ballot Scheme)

    • Officials forged absentee ballots to ensure victory in a local primary election, with several local politicians convicted in a scheme to influence the vote.

    12. 2012 - Florida (Absentee Ballot Fraud Ring)

    • Political operatives manipulated absentee ballots to favor candidates in several races, with the case leading to arrests of those involved in the fraudulent handling of ballots.

    • An organized effort by a political group submitted numerous fraudulent voter registrations, manipulating the rolls for upcoming elections.

    14. 2014 - North Carolina (Double Voting and Voter List Mismanagement)

    • A scheme involved harvesting and manipulating mail-in ballots. Operatives were arrested for attempting to sway elections by collecting and illegally handling mail-in ballots.

    16. 2016 - Arizona (Illegal Ballot Harvesting)

    • Unauthorized ballot collection methods were exposed, prompting Arizona to pass legislation to curb ballot harvesting due to the risk of election interference.

    17. 2017 - New Jersey (Election Official Voter Intimidation)

    • Officials were accused of voter intimidation to sway election results in a local race, resulting in a court-ordered settlement restricting certain election-day activities.

    18. 2018 - North Carolina 9th Congressional District (Absentee Ballot Tampering)

    • A major election fraud case involved operatives tampering with and manipulating absentee ballots, ultimately leading to the nullification of the election results and criminal charges.

    19. 2019 - Texas (Non-Citizen Voting and Voter List Manipulation)

    • A review found coordinated attempts to influence voter rolls with non-citizen registrations, resulting in investigations and additional measures to prevent election interference.

    20. 2020 - California (Unauthorized Drop Boxes by Political Groups)

    • Unauthorized ballot drop boxes were placed by political groups, prompting court challenges and removals to prevent potential election tampering.

I know teachers who have taught for decades, they might have been on paper qualified but their competence was non existent. Trump is twice impeached, a convicted criminal, used the office of President for self enrichment and made the US a laughing stock on the international stage. So ya, it's not even debatable that he's competent at this stage.

It's looking increasingly likely that he won't win imho. Generally Harris is out polling him and that Trump betting lead has pretty much disappeared after that Iowa poll. I don't put much stock in the betting odds but a Trump win is far from certain.

Sorry, I don't know why I called him JFK Jr. RFK Jr.

I came across the following after a quick google search:

"As a former Senior Attorney for the Natural Resources Defense Council, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. sought to establish sustainability and good stewardship of the Earth as central ethical imperatives of human society. Kennedy has worked on environmental issues across the Americas and has assisted several indigenous tribes in Latin America and Canada in successfully negotiating treaties protecting traditional homelands. He is credited with leading the fight to protect New York City's water supply. The New York City watershed agreement, which he negotiated on behalf of environmentalists and New York City watershed consumers, is regarded as an international model in stakeholder consensus negotiations and sustainable development."

I know you don't like him or Trump, but it's undeniable that he's done good work when it comes to the environment.

Find anything else at all in that Google search. Maybe about what his anti vaxx crankery lead to…?

Any good he's done has been undone by the bad at this stage. And seems like he's willing to just turn his back on his environmentalism just to suck up to Trump.

"Favoured" is over egging it more than a little.

A combination of decades of misinformation and outright lies from the Right-wing media along with a bizarre and convoluted Electoral system mean that a widely unpopular Candidate has a shot at winning the Election despite not ever having a hope of winning the support of the majority of voters in the Country.

Trump might win but his victory if it happens, will come down to probably 60/70k votes spread across 5 or 6 States whilst losing the popular vote by ~100 times that number.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,418 ✭✭✭Flaneur OBrien

I get that Trump has confused some of his voters out there, with his misuse of certain words and terms.

For example, when he posted that mugshot picture, with the tagline, "No surrender".

Allow me to explain to you the irony of that situation. When you hand yourself in to the police, to be charged, get your fingerprints & your mugshot taken, you are quite literally, surrendering yourself to the police force to be processed for crimes. That was an incorrect use of the word "surrender".

I pointed out that there is literally no point debating you, as you appear to not have the mental capacity to understand my points. That is not a "surrender", it is an acknowledgment that that our debate is now over, and as you were unable to countenance my point, I am the victor, if you wish see it that way.

Personally, I don't like to see it as winner and loser. I engage in conversation and debate here. Not to win, but to pass the time and educate myself.

I don’t suppose we’ll see a rise in votes for the other minor candidates or even a record vote for the minor candidates? A sort of “none of the above” protest vote?
