Just emptied a 20kg. bag of Tilda Basmati rice and this pops out. Looks like, suppose I should open it and get a whiff. It says on the bag “2grs. Free Saffron”

Anyone come across it before? Is it the real McCoy? I’ll pop it in a Paella dish if so.

    That’s a lot of saffron!

The rice must be seriously over-priced if they can include free saffron with it!

Tilda rice is usually an extortionate price.

    6 quid for a 1kg bag.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth house?

    A 20kg bag of rice!

I usually pick up a 20kg bag every year or so. ~€50 or so off Asia Market.

But…….I don’t reckon it’s real saffron. Bought “saffron” in Tenerife a few years ago, it was cheap, too cheap……wasn’t saffron. That stuff above looks like the wrong colour.

That looks to me like it might be real!

This is a helpful article to figure out if it's fake or not:

Tbh, I find there's so little taste off even the real stuff anyway that it makes no odds. (Except if you're actually paying for it, obvs.)

It just imparts a nice colour to paella. Agree……very little taste.

Turmeric does the same thing for a fraction of the price.

That’s what I usually use……..but not too fond of the taste it imparts.

considering 2g of saffron is worth more than 1Kg of rice I would suspect the likelihood it’s real is slim.

    Does not look real either.

Real Saffron does indeed have a taste of its own - a subtle but fascinating flavour, somewhere between black pepper and old honey - hard to describe but unmistakeable if you know it. Normally used by soaking a couple of precious strands in half a cup of hot water until infused and deep gold. Use the liquid in your recipe.

It is also a horrifying price; the amount in that sachet would be worth a hundred quid at least. It's not saffron, final answer.

I think saffron is one of those things that some people taste strongly and others hardly at all.

There are many different grades (and prices) of real saffron and many limitations, too. I don't imagine a well known brand like Tilda would give away fake saffron. I reckon it's real but not high quality saffron.

that’s a fairly interesting conclusion. Tesco sell fake saffron for example.

They used to also sell beef mince products with horse mince. Being a well known or reputable brand does not mean they don’t engage in shady business.

More like you got free rice when you bought saffron 😝
