The whole discussion stemmed from a comment from another poster bemoaning Munster's current situation at TH and then the post you took my quote from is focused on movement of three IQ players into provinces for the TH position so I have absolutely no idea why you are trying to now make the leap that I was talking about development beyond an individual position.

Even my follow up example of Leinster and potential future signings was focused on a single position, where they have struggled to develop in the past.

I'm assuming early bets must be on one of the currant coaches or Costello taking over. Would a new (outside) coach want to change the current coaching set up. I wouldn't like to lose Prendergast or Leamy.

Id be happy for prendergast to get the role for now. We really need some stability, he has a very strong CV, was seen a good few coaching teams / set ups, and tbf our attack is much improved.

So, taking this to its logical conclusion, means you’re against all NIQ signings?

    That’s even more absurdly reductive.

Leamy must be under pressure aswell, our defence has been shocking this year

The downside to him getting the Head Role is (I think) that his current role might be filled by someone else or he may share the attack role with someone like Mossy and or attack might suffer.

The downside of Costello getting it is he's doing a great job in the player pathways.

But as you say, I'd like to see some stability too so I'd be happy with either of them getting the job.

Fekitoa left NZ for money. He stayed in Europe for money. Fair enough.

But not because he wasn't good enough anymore.

He was on £450,000 at Wasps.

At Munster - €300k? Unlikely. €400k? More than likely.

Munster’s marquee signing this season, World Cup-winning centre Malakai Fekitoa, is cutting short his stay in Limerick and will depart at the end of this campaign.

The 30-year-old former All Black, signed on a two-year deal to replace Springbok World Cup winner Damian de Allende, joined from Wasps but has struggled to make an impact.

    _____________________________________________________________

I dont really care how some Munster fans bracket the signings….they don't come cheap anyway.

What I do care about is how the CEO of Munster has presided over all of these signings and re-signings, and resignations.

Now 2 Head Coaches in 3 Years have left before their contracts expired….

An element of mystery continues to surround the decision by Johann van Graan to leave his role as Munster head coach at the end of the current season. Although Munster's statement yesterday said negotiations were at an advanced stage regarding the offer of a new contract, The Irish Times has learned that he agreed a new two-year deal last March and actually signed it in July.

However, van Graan has seemingly activated a release clause in this contract and will now finish up with Munster after five seasons at the helm.

One source told The Irish Times that a deal for him to take over at Bath, the Premiership’s bottom-place club, has already been done, but in addition to the lure of that job it appears there may have been issues at play as well.

Van Graan had been very keen for Munster to re-sign the World Cup-winning pair of RG Snyman and Damian de Allende. Both of those signings are understood to have been funded, at least in part, by the so-called ‘1014’ group of private backers.

But after Snyman’s cruel misfortune in suffering two ruptures of his anterior cruciate ligament there appears to have been a reluctance to sanction a new deal. De Allende is also expected to move after this season, most probably back to Japan.

There appear to be frictions behind the scenes and the exodus may not stop there because in addition to Stephen Larkham - who is returning to the Brumbies as head coach - it is anticipated that defence coach, JP Ferreira, may also accompany van Graan to his next port of call.

Furthermore Graham Rowntree, like Ferreira, is employed directly by Munster and, as with van Graan and Larkham, their contracts also expire at the end of the current season.

Rowntree has done a fine job with the Munster forwards and would be another significant loss if he didn’t re-sign. Indeed, he might even be an option to succeed van Graan.

Whatever happened to Rowntree pushed/left/release clause. Munster are in crisis.

Serious change needs to happen. It starts at the top…..

IRFU only get involved in basket cases. See Ulster (McFarland and then CEO Petrie) & Connacht (Kieran Keane).

The IRFU get involved IN ALL Head Coach appointments, the Head Coaches are directly employed by the IRFU and not by the relevant province.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 5,455 ✭✭✭ionadnapóca

    yes

& Im saying basket cases are when they leave during a season.

    McFarland & Petrie, Kieran Keane…Rowntree

I wouldn't be surprised if the IRFU will be 'asking' Munster to look for a new CEO soon.

Munster board should be looking for a new CEO, and I think fans deserve that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,349 ✭✭✭✭Foxtrol

Now who is taking a 'leap'?

I've repeatedly said it should be a case by case basis and have spoken against rigid blanket policies, like DHump is now taking.

Having said that, if there is a pathway to get highly touted IQ players opportunities they should be taken over bringing in top tier foreign import, especially in areas where there is lack of depth for the national side

Simon Lewis reported that Flanagan was on the short list for the FAI job

All credit to living under a rock! We play the All Blacks XV, to be clear they are the second national rugby union team of New Zealand, after the All Blacks.

Playing for the team is considered a pathway to eventually being part of the first national team

There is no such thing as a mauri team, not in rugby anyway

Edit: Perhaps you mean the Maori All Blacks? I don't think they're touring at the end of this year

Looking forward to POM making a surprise return to the team and of course being captain now that Rowntree is gone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,816 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

Not much of a surprise since there was a squad update yesterday that confirmed POM will play. Also Diarmuid Killagen and Brian Gleeson are back fom injury. According to Twitter there will be a team announcement at 5pm

Certainly him being captain again would be notable just as Rowntree is out the door.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,816 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

Not sure I'd read too much into it, although if he's captain for the game V Lions that would be something

    Probably.

IRFU definitely will be looking at Munster asking:

What did they provide into the National Team?

    • Murray, O’Mahony, Nash, Casey, Crowley & maybe Kendellen

What will they provide into the National Team for RWC 2027?

    • Murray, O’Mahony, Nash, Casey, Crowley,
    • Ahern, E.Edogbo? S.Edogbo? Gleeson.
    • & maybe Kendellen (I have my doubts)

What will they provide beyond RWC 2027?

AND most importantly is the right man in place to maximise a return on the investment of the IRFU money?

    IRFU Answer:

We need more. And yet another Head Coach is gone.

    Time for a change.

The current CEO is a marketing guy whose skills are in the corporate sponsorship and partnership arenas, definitely a valuable skill set in any pro sport set up. But as CEO, why? This is the kind of thing any business theoretician will explain is evidence of a company in decline, when sales and marketing get control of the business. Jobs was particularly brutal about it. I assume there is no firewall between the CEO and the team/coaching parts of the organisation and as CEO, regardless of his rugby ability or experience (he seemingly has none), there is a risk that the cultural and strategic imperatives around the team get diluted by executive priorities. I have no idea if this is the case with Munster but ten years into a slow bleed the problems with the club are bigger than this or that coach or whether this or that NIQ player was the right call. For me the guy at the top needs to be deeply connected to the central mission of the organisation, and that is to put a team on the filed that can compete consistently at the top. All of the other elements need to serve that purpose, the grassroots network, the academy, the administrative and coaching team, etc. If the main man is more concerned with Bank of Ireland or Alliance Insurance or Toyota Ireland, that's a problem.

I'd argue that every Irish Qualified player is being "provided" to the IRFU for the national team.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,416 ✭✭✭realhorrorshow

Probably the quickest wings Munster have named in a while.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 5,455 ✭✭✭ionadnapóca

Id counter argue that what is being "provided" is clearly not at the level required.

Crowley is good enough - Bryan Fitzgerald is not good enough.

I'm using Fitzgerald as an extreme example. Fair play to him and he may turn out to be a very good player.

The point is there isn't enough quality coming out of Munster and it looks like the place is in tumult.

Is there only one player from Limerick ie shay McCarthy on the Munster team ?

5 or 6 from West Cork and 1 from Limerick, changed times !
