So don't listen to her, then. Simples.

    "Far left." lol.

Actually, Mario has been there since early 1998 if not December 1997, he started off doing his shtick on the Mark Byrne breakfast show, this is seldom acknowledged by Mario or Today FM but this newspaper clipping confirms this

but she is almost always on that slot, has been for years. its like tuning in at 5.30 on a thursday and being shocked that John Gibbons is on and its depressing.

Still waiting for the Laura Whitmore, Dara Quilty and Eoghan McDermott show.

Very interesting. I had forgotten that I had read before that Mario joined during the Mark Byrne era. There was some confusion about when Mario first started there, probably because the name Gift Grub came later. This means that he has been around the longest on Today FM on the broadcasting side of the house, putting Ian Dempsey in second place. It also looks likely that Mario joined when the station was still called Radio Ireland. The name change happened at around January 6th 1998. If that is the case, he is definitely the last one standing from Radio Ireland. While Phil Cawley was the last broadcaster to leave from the original Radio Ireland line up, it seems he may not have been the last from the Radio Ireland era.

Re Ed Smyth's age, according to the Irish Independent he is still 47! Maybe he did not have his birthday yet (born in 1976). I think we will move on from this!…..

Who is likely to go first when it happens: Ian or Mario?

I don't think she has always been on that slot.

Maybe she has and I had switched to the hard shoulder but now I think Keith Walshe and Alison Curtis, who are both melts, are on that slot now.

Shes just a cheap broken down AI. Has about 50ish phrases that are generally always used regardless of topic at hand.

So isn't that more of a Matt Cooper problem, then?

I mean, we all know McDermott's stand on most issues without having to hear it, but still Cooper brings her on to discuss those topics. It's a bit pointless. Like discussing, I dunno, the proposed plan for a Galway Luas one minute, then asking "Now in the six at six - what city has been talking about getting its own Luas?" literally right after. Or having the right-wing US Republican Cal Thomas and the horrified Democrat Marion McKeown on every Tuesday. We know exactly what they'll say.

I think Ian will go first. Not basing that on anything really. Just that he seems closer to retirement than Mario. I could also see a world in which Ray Foley & JP take over from Ian and Gift Grub would be kept on to help a smooth transition.

Ian is closer to retirement - he is in his sixties!

Claire Becks Saturday Soundsystem show is finishing this weekend but she said she’ll be staying with the station

Ah ffs, that's my favourite show. What is going on in Today FM.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 290 ✭✭Chun the Unavoidable

Indeed, this is exactly how TLW has become so formulated - Marion and Cal have been at it at the same time each week for perhaps 10 years, Roe McDermott has been on the same timeslot and issues for perhaps the same amount of time the same as many other slots - the football on TLW on Sport still has Cascarino and Lawrenson. I guess as the listenership figures are holding steady the audience has more or less stuck with the show in this format for a long time and so they have no real need to change it. The climate slot seems to be the newest one to be added and that has also been going a few years.

Geeez I never thought of that way. The slots really have been cookie cutter for so so long now. They could have recorded Marion and Cal once and replayed it for the last ten years.

One of the summer replacements getting to take over her saturday gig?

What kind of fishing - river or lake, and what type of shoes? Sorry - couldn't resist!

I think this too, seems to be the succession plan

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 603 ✭✭✭Shan Doras

Im guessing this is another cost saving measure and they'll simply be hitting robojock music through the night mode from 10pm from now on. Remember that 20 years ago, Today FM was live from 5am until 2am on weekdays and 6am to 2am on weekends, this has been chipped back bit by bit over the past 10/15 yrs

Re Mario and how long he’s been with the station, yes he’s been there longer than Iano and he talks about it in some detail in the series of podcasts they did earlier this year to celebrate Gift Grub’s 25th(?) anniversary - Gift Wrapped.
Mario tells a few amusing anecdotes on that podcast. He had been doing a few sketches already but wasn’t tied to any one show. He did a bit on breakfast but also did bits with Eamon Dunphy on the last word.
The station was really struggling for listeners and then the Ian Dempsey rumours started. Mario recalls that whenever Ian was due to visit the station in advance of his new show starting, out came the yellow balloons and the champagne 😅

Then the 2 of them met, they clicked, Iano wanted a comedy element to his new show, as he had the likes of “Jimmy” and zig and zag from his RTE days… and the rest is history.

For some strange reason she disappeared off all radio slots for a couple of years. Then she came back with a bang.

First time in this thread in years.....is this craic still going on?? 🙄

Eds show has been terrible the last few years, I wonder why he waited to be pushed as opposed to picking up work elsewhere? If he was staff, holding out for a redundancy package maybe??

Claire Beck's Saturday Soundsystem was the last thing I actually listened to on this station, not quite as good as the beat goes on, but it was the final bit of colour in an increasingly beige schedule.…

Today FM really now is the station for those that have truly given up on life.

was clare beck's sat night show the only one left on the station that played non-chart / non-well known music ?

the only specialist show left ?

yes I know dec pierce plays dance anthems, but these are generally well known songs and I wouldnt call his shows as 'specialist'.

Some more names came to mind since.

    Tom Dunne - Newstalk

    John Kelly - Lyric FM

Jim McCabe (a few gigs) - Radio Nova

    Anton Savage - Newstalk

Karl Tsignidos - Dublin City FM

    Colm O'Sullivan - Red FM

FFS, what a jokeshop of a station its turning into. So, they are going probably to get one person in to do the weekend late evening slots with Ed and Claire going? Mad stuff altogether.
