That's actually an interesting thing to do, alternating shows on weeknights hasn't been a thing on the station since 1997 and indeed nightly alternating shows has become very rare on Irish radio in general, Even RTE radio 1 has mostly phased it out apart from Mooney goes wild on Monday nights.

    I like it.

Have Ciara and Clodagh been on before?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,066 ✭✭✭ford fiesta

if the average listener is getting their hopes up about these nightly themed shows - don't too much.

the shows will be voicetracked (not live) with generic links promoting the go-loud digital stations and sampling the chilled, country, 90s or whatever stations that are on their digital platform. that's the shows purpose.

Where are you getting that information from?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,567 ✭✭✭JoeA3

I would say it’s an educated, but in my opinion, a wholly accurate guess.

I reckon that is Barry Dunne's first time presenting on a national station. I looked up Ciara Revins. She is a presenter from Red FM and recently a stand-in co-host on RTE's The Today Show with Daithi O'Shea. I also looked up Clodagh Lawlor. She is a musician and a former presenter on Limerick's Live 95 and Clare FM.

They're going from a "rock"(*) show to Country? I mean, I know it's popular in Ireland, but… didn't Communicorp used to have a "country" station that closed down? The target audience won't be listening in to know about it. /shrug

    (*) rock/Coldplay/Imagine Dragons/Blink1982… Jebus, Ed, no wonder you quit…

It’s country one night a week. It’s not like they’re going all-in on it.

How is anyone going to build a following based on 1 x 2 hour show a week, where they are limited in what they can play. Stupid idea. TodayFM is gone to the dogs.

Had you ever listened to existing shows: Today FM Rocks (10pm Sun to Thur) or Today FM 80s (10pm Fri) ??

These shows promoted and created content / links around these on-line stations a lot. They are not really like regular Today FM shows that normally take requests or callers, text in your stories, entertainment news, mention cash call etc etc. The 10pm to midnight show is simply a promotional tool for go loud on-line channels content - that's mostly it and fills a gap in the already declining presenter schedule.

Friday night 80s barely mentions the online stations, so not sure why you're saying that.

    Some interesting nostalgia. www.independent.ie/irish-news/radio-ireland-gets-new-name-after-losing-2m/26197972.html

final saturday soundsystem is on now.

the mostly unknown, less commercial music that is being played will never be heard on Today FM ever again.

so it is a historic show - in that alternative / specialist / new emerging 'indie' 'rock' or 'dance' music genres (previously played by Tom Dunne, Donal Dineen, Ed Smith, Paul McLoone and others) will be a thing of Today FMs past from now on. I'm not including Declan Pierce here as he does play a lot of commercial music.

Belter of a last show from Claire Beck

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 922 ✭✭✭TheBMG

Claire’s shows have always been great. Really makes you miss having a Phantom/TXFM/8Radio type station on fulltime FM. Or DAB but that’s probably for another thread ..

You’re not a listener on a Bauer Media owned station, you’re a customer.

I think it's a pretty safe bet that their new midweek country show will be more early Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood and LeAnn Rimes rather than Big Tom, Wee Daniel and Margo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,753 ✭✭✭Declan A Walsh

What "country" station did Communicorp have? It certainly did not have an FM-based one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 4,378 ✭✭✭TaurenDruid

I think I'm mistaken about that. I'd a vague memory that there was one, back in the mid 90s or early 00s, but it wouldn't have been something I'd have ever voluntarily listened to, and looking online I can't find anything.

I happened to be driving after 10pm tonight and Paula McSweeney is doing Today FM Rocks. Surely it would be better and cheaper just to do a playlist of American Jock Rock music than have a presenter who doesnt know her arse from her elbow. Let her play Beyonce and tell her listeners what happened on Love Island last night, but don't ask her to present a so called rock music show.

I think Sunshine 106.8 evolved from some country station as part of a rebrand.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,753 ✭✭✭Declan A Walsh

It did indeed - originally called Dublin's Country 106.8, but it was not owned by Communicorp.

Ah, yeah, that's the one I was thinking of! Yeah, sorry, I thought that was Communicorp, my bad.

A bit harsh, maybe? I only caught 40 minutes or so, but "arse from elbow", really? She was coming out with stuff about acts and songs the very same way Ed would have. Do I think she's right for the show? No, probably not - that late on a Sunday evening, I don't need or want a presenter to be so "high energy" - but I'll give her another couple of listens to see if she settles in to it.

its very interesting but it does look like a buffet thing to advertise the online stations dedicated to those styles. You'd be hoping that the shows stay well away from the daily playlist. I've been hearing Shake it Out from Florence and the Machine quite a lot in the past week so maybe thats the thing that will end up on these playlists.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 3,021 ✭✭✭hold my beer

Is it a sort of competition? Whoever pulls the most listeners gets the slot more often? That's the only reason I can think of for it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 290 ✭✭Chun the Unavoidable

as previously by another poster i believe that some of them are Voice Tracked adverts for their online specialist stations.

They will be actually because that poster said so as a matter of fact. So that's that.

What exactly is in dispute here? That the shows will be pre recorded? That the presenters won't plug that there's 24/7 Rock Country 80s 90s streams available on the goloud app ? 🤷‍♂️
