Mobius, I got a few calls and messages a few days beforehand to confirm there would be someone home for installation. The lads told me that they don't go more than 65 meters between poles.

    Keep the faith....

Hi I did the same with sky and the first date they gave me was the 20 Sept that date came and went as it was still in preorder stage on NBI. Went to ready to connect last week on NBI. Someone on behalf of Sky rang there yesterday to say that they would be out to connect up 1st Nov.

I thought it was 50m, good to see they stretch it to 65m, so to speak.

Thanks for that ShaunC, good to know. Haven't measured it but reckon I'm definitely within 65m, probably within 50m as well.

Does Eir support IPv6 on NBI connections? I’m at my parents place which got connected a few weeks ago and noticed that the connection wasn’t as responsive as it should be. I quickly discovered that IPv6 wasn’t working, my phone was getting a v6 address but no connectivity, so it would then failover to IPv4. Router reboot didn’t resolve it so I just disabled IPv6 in the router settings.

Edit: I tried enabling it again this morning and it’s working. Must have been an issue on Eir’s end.

Is worming the cable up your lawn an option with NBI infra when they come to survey? Ideally would like to avoid coming in overhead. I am out in countryside & fibre terminal put in on a pole about 50 metres up the road from me & another 50 metres up the drive to my house. Just want to have a bit of knowledge before the surveyor calls soon hopefully to outline plan.

Any advice appreciated & if anyone has gone through something similiar

    Thanks for reply

No existing ducting in place. Don't have a landline. Using Imagine LTE broadband since moved in.

Hey all as a long time lurker/occasional poster in the channel. My wait for NBI continues BUT OpenEir got to my estate first. Fibre installed yesterday, meanwhile NBI has the house slated for 2026.

KN installer yesterday told me that the daft thing is, NBI will roll out here AND depending on the provider, will require a separate line simply because its NBI infrastructure vs Open Eir.

looks like that is exactly what is happening with me… Yesterday came and went without anybody showing up.. Sky app tells me yesterday's visit is still "in progress"..

Surely if OpenEir are there then the estate should be ineligible for NBI? But yes, if they do roll out then it will be separate fibre.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,536 ✭✭✭joe123

Yep thats what i thought. There is a duplicate work going on. Open Eir are upgrading all FTTC connections to FTTH. Even if those areas are in the NBI. Like my estate.

Once the NBI intervention area was defined, they were always going to install there. The fact that OpenEir subsequently decided to upgrade there doesn't change the NBI rollout.

They are also always going to be separate networks - the same as if SIRO decided to serve that estate, they would install a separate network also.

Dumb question time - how do I know if I'm getting an OpenEir or NBI connection? Getting connected tomorrow.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,043 ✭✭✭✭The Cush

    Exactly this.

I believe there is compensation option in the contract for such instances , where a commercial operators encroaches into the IA. Where there's a potential loss of revenue to NBI.

Are you in the NBP intervention area? If so check the NBI website for availability dates in your area.

As above both OpenEir and NBI can be available in the same location.

Edit: I see from a post a year ago we're from the same area, in which case there's no NBI fibre here yet. Likely 12 months away.

Lots of work being done in preparation, roads in the area marked recently for new NBI poles and ducting done from the exchange to routes outside the village.

Eir did some work also, they rolled fibre out to the village recently and extended their fibre around the 5 Cross Roads.

ComReg.ie has a "Broadband Availability Checker" that will identify network operators providing services to your eircode/address.

Interesting. I live down past the 5 cross-roads and they have brought fibre along the Newport road just past Denis Holmes Kitchens. Routed it along about a month ago. In early October Eir came door to door saying it was due to go active on October 24th and I'm scheduled to have the house connected tomorrow. That is the end of the current Murroe copper line. From there it is the line coming from Newport. Interestingly that have markings for new poles past the end of the Murroe line so looks like they are extending and bringing it further from the Murroe direction.

Comreg and the NBI site are still saying that Network Build is Underway with a date of Jan to Dec 2026!

Looks like maybe I'm getting OpenEir then. I did look at the NBI and OpenEir providers and identified providers that are on NBI but not OpenEir. Virgin Media are one and when I do the availability checker on their site it says that fibre is not available but Eir/Digiweb/Three etc. all say it is available.

Red markings on the road, arrow + letter P, are NBI new pole locations. They don't necessarily follow the OpenEir local exchange route. Lots around the area, all done recently.

This is the second route out of the village I know of that NBI will run fibre into a neighbouring copper exchange area for convenience, the other is east out of the village into the Cappamore copper exchange area via Ballyvoreen

Best of luck with your installation.

They just come and run the cable to the gable end and leave it at that? Or into the house and ONT installed?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 61 ✭✭samcr440!

Yes that's correct thats all they did today. Weren't in the house at all today

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,354 ✭✭✭✭listermint

They'll run overhead or existing ducting.

If you want underground you'd have to duct yourself, which is what I did a few years back in prep.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,376 ✭✭✭✭shmeee

That's odd. Usually they go the whole way when that far. Seems pointless? KN Cricet can do the whole hog, and it's a plug and play job for the router once line is active. A bit of a waste if you think about it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 61 ✭✭samcr440!

Yeah found it odd myself as I got a text message later on then to say that KN Circet on behalf of Sky would be connecting me on Friday afternoon which is the date that was booked by Sky. So it could well be the same lad back on Friday to finish off. I did ask when he was there would he be installing the ONT be he said he woundnt be doing that.

I don't think it's uncommon. My fibre was brought from the DP to the house by one crew, and brought into the house and connected by another (one man) ~two weeks later. I've seen at least one other person say the same on this thread. I've also seen evidence of the same around here too (fibre coiled at houses).

    Thanks for reply @listermint .

Thankfully the duct I had my builder install in prep for fibre like yourself is a runner again after inititally thinking it wouldnt work. House is self build from 6 years back.

NBI surveyor who called yesterday was able to a rod to check the duct. Got it from my entrance almost all the way to box at my house( approx 80 metre). Was not able to get it all the way but he said the civic crew should get it through. He said once its coming that far its all good though & shouldn't be a problem.

No mention of overhead. If ducting wasn't a runner , they would have wormed it up the lawn for me. Overhead was my worry.Fibre is weeks away. Santa may come early this year. Woo hoo!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,491 ✭✭✭pizzahead77

OpenEir, NBI, Siro, Virgin Media are all different wholesale providers and use their own networks hence you'd need different fibre cable & ONT installed depending on which wholesale provider the retail provider is supplying to your premises

Got connected today. Getting over 800mb with Sky very pleased. He took about an hour or so in house by the time all his tests etc where done

Got connected yesterday with OpenEir and Eir as the provider with the 1Gbps package. Needed to go overhead but very tidy install by KN.

Unbelievable difference compared to my 4G. Was maxing out at over 900Mbps using a Cat5e cable to my 14 year old laptop with Linux OS. Getting over 100 Megabytes per second on a torrent via a VPN. Tested it via wireless by streaming a 100GB film on my TV, worked flawlessly.

Getting a TP Link mesh system delivered next week and going to use one node to replace the EIr router.
