Lines up well enough for next season. Doing a permanent hire mid-season just means you are choosing among a stupidly limited pool who don't have jobs for a reason probably.

I miss the days of Jake White being linked to every single open job going.

There's no way this is performance related, I would think it was initiated by Rowntree himself and Munster agreed to his request. The question is why he wanted out.

Hard to know what went on but it was clear for a few weeks that there was a rift between management and players

Leicester. Michael Cheika. 1 year Contract.

    IRFU. 6 Month release clause.

Felix Jones. 'gardening leave'. RFU 12 Month notice period.

“I would like to thank the wider Munster family for all the support they have shown me in my time here but now is the right stage for my family and I to look forward to a new chapter.” - Rowntree

Sad to see. He's a great rugby man and I think Munster will be worse off without him at the moment.

I feel that his players owed him more.

Was it? How did you see something that nobody else did?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 65 ✭✭Crazy Davey

No surprise. A blind man could see he wasn’t up to and Munster were going backwards

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 5,964 ✭✭✭fonecrusher1

Not so sure about that to be honest. Munster have lost 6 of the last 8 games since the start of the season. I think it is performance related.

Well you’ll find out soon. Rowntree was out of his depth.

I haven't seen this - if you want to take it to PM please do but can you expand on this, please.

Lancaster might not last too much longer at Racing. I'd say he'd be a good fit.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators, Paid Member Posts: 31,514 Mod ✭✭✭✭Podge_irl

I'd be shocked if there wasn't a performance element to the whole thing. While his URC record is good (though not without serious black marks at times), his European record is pretty ropey.

That being said, I doubt its the whole reason. It is very unusual for something like this to happen mid-season.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 13,214 Mod ✭✭✭✭Cookiemunster

Munster lost 5 of the first 7 in 22/23 and went on to win the URC.

They finished top of the regular season last year.

    And preseason friendlies are meaningless.

He had plenty of credit in the bank. It simply can't be performance related.

It can’t be performance related, even if the higher ups wanted him gone they wouldn’t have the balls to do it now. Munster are still an inherently conservative organisation. The only way he was pushed is if there were massive rifts in the dressing room.

Rubbish. Rowntree was the only head coach in Irish rugby who has a trophy in the last 2 seasons.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,495 ✭✭✭leakyboots

Won the league and then finished top of the regular season... it can't be performance-related.

Sad to see him go but based on the above it seems like he felt he had to. As others said, the 'why?' will be interesting. Wonder will it be IRFU-related.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,817 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

Well our bad start to the season is about to get a lot worse. The team need the supporters more than ever now. We should try to get to the games and roar our team on

I'd be interested to hear did the suits at Munster want him out or did he want to leave himself

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,817 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

You think the IRFU have poached him from Munster? I would really hope they didn't just take a s#!t on their own doorstep but it does sound like something the SARU would do

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 5,964 ✭✭✭fonecrusher1

And that's exactly what i'm saying. I'm not saying its down to performance exclusively. Not at all, Rowntree seemed like a good fit but regardless of how we cut it or go into what-aboutery or compare to last season it doesn't help to lose quite a few games since the start of this season. Its a shame. Not good at all for Munster.

Rowntree was spitting fire after the Zebre game and would have demanded a reaction, but unfortunately it didn’t seem to materialise.

My guess is that he felt he wasn’t getting through to the players and it was time to move on. It’s unlikely there was a player revolt or anything like that.

    We are all guessing.

But the timing is weird. All blacks on Saturday. A break then. Would have made more sense to do it then unless something happened.

The statements are also fairly brief. No mention of urc win etc. No mention of personal reasons.

It is suggestive of a bust up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 26,504 ✭✭✭✭phog

No mention of urc win etc.

I mean if you're going to ignore it then of course there's no mention of anything

For clarity, this is their (MR) piece on the URC win

In his first season as Head Coach, Rowntree led Munster to the URC title, the club’s first trophy in 12 years, before overseeing a top of the table finish in last season’s URC campaign.

wasn’t tgeee rumours of discontent beteeeen him and Pom last year ….this is a bonkers decision

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,764 ✭✭✭Pepp1989

I meant the direct quotes but fine. I take your point.

Clearly the timing is questionable. Unless you think it was actually mutual and everything was fine between all parties? Maybe you do. I prefaced my post by saying we are guessing.

The timing and nature of the quotes given, in my opinion, mean something happened.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,817 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

The timing is very weird, unless he's linking in with an international side in which he is a bit late, but still possible, or with a Super Rugby side, which the timing would fit nicely

My only problem with the above 2 scenarios is that if either are true it shows a complete lack of respect to Munster

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 26,504 ✭✭✭✭phog

It's a Munster Rugby statement so it is their direct quote and they mentioned the URC win and the topping of the table last year, to me they're saying it's not performance related.

Of course we're all guessing but then why say something wasn't said when it was clearly stated in their statement.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,543 ✭✭✭JanuarySnowstor

Munster were going nowhere and a change had to happen!! Timing unusual but this all blacks game is a nonsense anyway. The real team are playing England same day

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,913 ✭✭✭lawrencesummers

i cant agree with the talk of Felix coming into a headcoach role.

I just dont see it, he sure has a massive amount to offer but it was clear from the Behind scenes footage of SA in chasing the sun that hes something akin to a mad scientist / anorak / stats and video mad person who excels at that role of research and finding nuggets of data and info that can have an impact.

I just dont see that being the experience needed to become a headcoach and manage a team of staff and a team of players, and i certainly dont see Munster being the place for someone to make the mistakes that will be made while they learn that job.

    What about dutchy?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,543 ✭✭✭JanuarySnowstor

Surely its time for one of our own such as POC or ROG.

Someone who understands the Munster psyche!!

I've no interest in arguing with you. If you are saying you didn't know what I meant by referencing direct quotes in the piece by Munster then I just think that's disingenuous and I'll leave it there.

A sad day for Munster Rugby. The season from hell gathers pace. It'll probably be a bit strange atmosphere wise on Saturday now.
