    That response speaks volumes.

There are clear boundaries for how issues are dealt with on this site, report the post and wait for it to be actioned. As the mods and admins have stated repeatedly, they're volunteers and won't always deal with those issues in double quick time.

In the interim between a post you deem to be problematic appearing and it being dealt with by the site staff, you aren't given free reign to gang up on that person with your pals and take a thread even further off topic.

I'm not trying to tell anyone how to suck eggs, but at the same time I see this behaviour from the same group of usual suspects every time. As this is a feedback thread I'm wondering if some people have such an obvious issue understanding the rules of the site, why are their actions not explicitly called out to discourage such behaviour?

If anything can be salvaged from this thread a few issues around clarification of rules that seem open to interpretation as well as this issue of pile ons being addressed could be a positive outcome.

Certainly can’t accuse the mods, and admins, of being “heavy handed” now.

Especially when repeatedly making claims that they can't back up.

Mod. BBOC is a decent mod in fairness. Hears people out. I may get banned yet - still in progress, but they still gave me right of reply, which was extremely gracious of them.

I think your response demonstrates the problem.

If there is an issue with the same suspects, then why are mods not tackling it.?

However, some people see anyone disagreeing with them as part of the group of suspects, when this is just not true. People have their own minds.

Mods were called liars, shocking abuse dished out, but yet it's always someone else's fault.

    That's what is wrong here.

No, you're biased. You're only looking at one perspective - you're not looking at the scores of falsehoods thrown at me. One mod, not mods. And yes they were throwing out falsehoods. They (and the others) could not back up a word of their allegations. Now call this mad, but when I accuse someone of something, I always have my ducks in a row and PLENTY to support my assertion.

You're right that they're not all one clique. I don't think Nullzero said they were though.

How is it "always someone else's fault" when I said I was the primary offender? You need to look at the full picture, not just cherrypick the bits that suit your views.

What's wrong is that people see one person they disagree with being taken to task and instead of leaving it there they join in.

It's like watching a child get bullied in a school yard, it's pathetic behaviour, and regardless of the persons opinions it demonstrates a willingness to devolve into uncooth animalistic behaviour amongst some users.

If you think a post is inappropriate report it. Nobody needs to see people demonstrating "their own minds" by parrotting points that have already been made in some mad scramble to score morality points.

The fact that you cannot see how there's anything remotely wrong with that behaviour is worrying.

I'm not cherrypicking anything, I'm just saying how it looks to someone reading the thread as an outsider, who as another poster said, has no skin in the game.

I agree whole heartedly, but perhaps better to drop it rather than lose the run of the thread again. It's already creeping…

Wouldn't blame them if they stepped down, absolute lunacy doing this for free, can't even enjoy a bank holiday biccie!!

The mythical issue of "pile ons" is back again.

That was already resolved 2 threads ago.

Resolved so effectively that the same thing happened again on this thread causing a massive amount of work for the moderation team.

Clearly it requires actual attention as opposed to being casually dismissed by people who quite enjoy engaging in it so don't bring it up thank you very much.

It wasn't resolved if I remember. The thread was eventually closed but nobody could clarify what a "pile on" is and I just left with the conclusion that some people can't handle being disagreed with on the internet.

This was the definition of 'piling on' recently given in Help Desk by Ten of Swords.

1- Piling on is where two or more posters talk directly about another poster (who may or may not be part of the conversation) generally making personalised remarks about them

Eg. Poster X said this previously, they're clearly wrong/stupid/misguided etc.

Yeah I agree, Poster X is a moron...

Yep, look what they said/did here...

And so on. Do not discuss other posters on thread as this is often the end result.

    Exactly.

the only way to avoid "pile on" is to find an echo chamber. If you cant handle someone disagreeing with you thats a personal problem. Not a site wide problem.

As I've experienced you engaging in this behaviour in the past I'm not surprised that you're happy to defend the practice.

The thing is, that type of carry on makes boards an unwelcoming place and drives people away from the site.

You might be delighted to see people you disagree with leaving but it's that type attitude that's driving the site into the ground.

If someone is posting something deemed unacceptable, there's a process in place to deal with it, you're a moderator, do you prefer to see the rules enforced or other posters you happen to agree taking matters into their own hands and derailing a thread thus creating more moderation tasks?

The purpose of this thread is to clarify rules and improve users experience and moderator workloads. Yet you as a category moderator are happy to allow people to indulge themselves, once their opinions align with yours which runs contrary to that goal.

"Pile on" was explained to you a couple of dozen times.

Your refusal to accept the explanation and insistence on claiming you are a victim of it does not make it true no matter how many times you try to claim it.

That's ultimately the objective for some people. I don't see the appeal, personally but it's been a recurring theme for some time now. Anyone who disagrees is piling on or being uncivil or whatever. If they don't get their echo chamber, they just trot out the same nonsense they've trotted out on countless occasions before.

I guess its a sign this thread is due to be closed when you see the same debunked conspiracies popping up again.

I don't know how mods have the patience to deal with the repitition some people insist on.

At least it's become vaguely relevant so there is that. I do feel an obligation to attempt to constructively engage but it becomes more and more of a chore with each thread with the same individuals and their perceived victimhood, litany of imaginary slights, conspiracy theories and infantile abuse towards anyone who disagrees with them.

We should try and do what we can to make the site work better but also be better though without an owner who engages, theses tasks will be herculean.

Saying people don't like being disagreed with on the internet when blatant ganging up can and does happen... is preposterous. The dismissive, sneering tone is something else! Why is it so difficult just to type in a neutral fashion?

They do that because they enjoy ganging up on people.

Bullies always defend and rationalise their behaviour by making it the other person's fault.

Totally. Gas-lighting. "Oh they just want an echo chamber", "they don't like being disagreed with" when they're the ones who can't handle a difference of opinion, and literally cannot write a sentence without some snide comment.

its the usual suspects that have issues with the mods, i have been a member on here for over 20 years at this stage and ive never felt unfairly treated and rarely ever even had correspondance with a mod, except for threads where some of the moaners in here are involved funnily enough,

Maybe its a you problem not a them problem….

No, that's replying back and forth in a civil tone.

Hardly anyone has a problem with being "disagreed with". That claim is so stupid.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,002 ✭✭✭✭pjohnson

I have decided I am being "piled on" therefore that decision alone makes it true.

And if you disagree with this maybe at last theres been a breakthrough in accepting what a "pile on" is.

Or you just hold a position that is indefensible and 90% of people posting see it as such and reply in kind.

Plenty of examples of people posting ridiculous stuff but refuse to debate their stance in the thread.... using excuses of having people on ignore etc... those same posters are actually complaining here as well.

I think it is borderline trolling at this stage, the carry on in some threads. Harris vs Trump thread is a good example.... You can be pro trump every day of the year, but when you post verifiable untruths, be prepared to defend your stance in thread and with some facts as to why you believe what you are posting. In a lot of cases it's not ganging up but simply the vast majority calling out the nonsense.

I think a lot of posters who are receiving their first bans in recent times are actually baited into going over the line in their reactions, after trying to engage with so called "drive by" posters who come in, post some ridiculous stuff, leave for a while, barely engage in the debate and then swing around for round 2, and 3 etc

It reads like John Mclane complaining about being bullied when he held up that sandwich board in Die hard with a vengeance.
