I don't know if mine has that policy but I've been told I'd need to have savings before I can get a loan.

I think they said a third of the amount applied for or something like that, so 1000 savings for a 3000 loan, not 100% sure on that

Your CU might be behind the times a bit. It used to be the case that you could only borrow X times your "shares" but now it's based on your ability to repay although they like you to be adding to your shares at the same time as you borrow. That's the case with mine anyway. Pretty sure the change came from the central bank regulator a few years ago.

@manatoo how did the NCT go yesterday for your Mazda6 ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 773 ✭✭✭Sir Galahad

Time to look around. I contract to the CU industry at the moment and you'll find one that'll lend if you look around. PM me if you need advice.

Well, it failed.... But not as expected. Both of the previous fail items (sill corrosion and handbrake efficacy) passed so I guess the guy wasn't full of sh1t. The mystery as to why anyone would fail an NCT, get pretty major repairs done and then not bother running it through the retest continues.

Two fail items - a wiper blade and the dust cover on the front nearside ball joint. Otherwise he said it's in good order.

From memory on previous ncts on other cars a ball joint is about 80 quid and id probably have to pay the same again in labour. Does that sound about right?

Not sure what to do now. Obviously it's not a high cost repair but every penny counts on a €450 spare car, especially since the tax is out in a few days. The safe bet is still to scrap it for €325 but it would be nice to think it would get another run on the road given it's so close

Get the NCT done but don’t tax it, would be my advice.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,562 ✭✭✭SCOOP 64

Surely worth putting a NCT on it then sell it on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,630 ✭✭✭littlevillage

Thanks for letting us know how you got on. My advice would be the same as the other posters have suggested. Get the NCT, don't bother with the tax and then advertise it for resale. You might make a few quid.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,110 ✭✭✭selectamatic

Definitely test it. Shur anything with a full test is worth a grand. Now again that depends on whether you are willing to listen to the melts that could possibly be contacting you about the sale.

Sorry to hijack OP, just in a similar situation. Have an 08 Avensis that I've spent a fair few quid on, since I got 4 years ago. Bushings, rear drop links, brakes fully redone last year & more I can't think of!

Failed it's NCT on a CV boot (whatever that is) & a rear light bulb. (the boot needs new seals- I think) Bought something else so now it's just sitting there

Think I'll just leave as is until I'm able to get it to pass the test, then move on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,562 ✭✭✭SCOOP 64

Again I would get this NCT now as the fails are not expensive fix, if you leave it then have to go to full test next time you might get a bigger bill ,all depends on the tester on the day.

Don't think I would let any car go to scrap or leave in the drive way with the 2 example above on minor NCT fails.

Definitely good advice re "all depends on the tester". One of my cars that had a drink of Dipetane every month and a binge session and Italian tune-up prior to recent NCT failed on emissions specatacularly. Mechanic, who has a 6 week waiting list, said there's absolutely nothing wrong with the car's emissions.… I'll know for sure tomorrow night.

I'll buy it off you based off of that NCT result.

I just need something that's not dangerous, has an NCT and will get me through a few months

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 413 ✭✭manatoo

I see your position as quite different to mine because an 08 Avensis with an NCT is worth 2500 all day long. People lose their minds for a good Avensis. Is it diesel?

A 21 year old 1.8 petrol Mazda 6 is a different situation. Insurance is difficult to get, tax expensive, parts not available in breakers yards etc

A CV boot if the driveshaft is fine, can be taken off, replaced, packed with grease and put back on and shouldn't cost more than 100 or so. Even if the CV joint needs replacing it's maybe 225 total. Definitely get the NCT on it now and then decide what to do next

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 413 ✭✭manatoo

Thanks. I'll bear that in mind. I'll get a price or two on the repair and go from there

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,116 ✭✭✭trixiebust

Thanks, I wasn't sure of the cost of replacing those bits. It's a petrol 1.6 with 230 odd km.

Was thinking of selling as is for 1k but if that's all it takes to fix,I'll definitely be looking into it.

Having got something else last week,2.5k would be nice & handy!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 413 ✭✭manatoo

The one question I'd have is if it's 08 and a 1.6 petrol, is it one 535 tax or is it emissions based and 750 tax or something like that?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,110 ✭✭✭selectamatic

    A 1.6 avensis won't sell for 2.5k. 1.5k would be a more realistic price.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 413 ✭✭manatoo

Have a look on donedeal. People are 1.6 Avensis obsessed. You would get one for 1500 maybe with a short NCT and rough bodywork but 2k+ for a relatively clean one all day long

Asking 2k and getting it are two very different things though. Plenty asking up on 2k but I'd say the vast majority are selling for a chunk less than that.

The very odd low mileage m1nter might differ if the seller is willing to wait for the right customer but that's about it.

Those two are both in the sticks and have big milages but yeah they're keenly priced and won't hang around long. Plenty in the 2k+ range up there too

Shur that second one ya linked has more km's on the clock. And the first is the exact type of example I talked about already the m1nter that has the type of seller that's going to wait and wait for a big price. He'll struggle big time to get his 4k though.

I know from experience 1.5k is a solid solid price to get for decent 1.6 avensis. Nearly all the ones on DD at 2k and above sit on it for a while and usually have a marked price reduction not including whatever a buyer might haggle in the flesh.

I'm not knocking them either they're great cars. There is however a ceiling to the price of most of them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,738 ✭✭✭pah

How can you tell from donedeal that people are obsessed with 1.6 avensii?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 413 ✭✭manatoo

Nothing to do with donedeal. It's the same as it was with the avensis mark 1, the Carina E, the Carina mark 2, the E10 Corolla etc etc etc. My father in law has a clean 07 and he regularly gets cash offers from country types when he's filling up. To an extent its well founded. People love a big car that's relatively cheap to run and doesn't break down. Try selling a 1.6 Laguna for 2 grand for example. Different story

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,699 ✭✭✭kermitpwee

Not a hope avensis are making north of 2k at that age, nobody wants them anymore, the nct are failing them on nothing arms in the back, it's not a cheap job

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,876 ✭✭✭User1998

Always remember asking prices are not selling prices

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,110 ✭✭✭selectamatic

I disagree on nobody wanting them. There's always a customer for a relatively cheap simple roomy car. A clean one with test will be worth over a grand to quite a few.

Not a lot of the mid naughties petrol saloons still on the roads. The bubbly avensis is holding on better than most.

YEs good cars at 1700 or less🙂

It's the cheaper rate €514 for the year. And believe it or not, somebody approached me in a SuperValu car park not so long ago wanting to know would I sell. Sorry I didn't now 😂
