I think that's usually on a carrier, programming on and off, not checked now in a long time but was certainly the case maybe 3 or 4 years ago.

I believe it's part of the installation in Ballyguille with East Coast, Newstalk and the 106.6 temp, it's costing someone money anyway.

Test transmissions in Cork city this evening for college station Juice FM on 88.7 (launching for this college year tomorrow) , back with temporary licence of 30 days throughout the college year (thursdays / and Tuesdays/Thursdays). Dynamic RDS PS tried earlier this evening (Todays Hit Music Juice FM) - though it seems there is now no RDS on it at all now, I assume it will be reinstated later

Is dynamic RDS still banned in Ireland ?

'Dublins ABC' now has an ABC Country segment 3 to 6pm on a Sunday on 93.3 weekends (in Dublin).

The 90s Network have not flipped format to 60's while Freedom are on air this year.

Freedom 105.2 sounding a little too bassy imho though enjoying their FM run.

I thought the same, I'm guessing they are still using the Omnia 9.

It's nice on Dance tunes but some pop and rock not so much.

Alot of the presets would encompass a wide band bass AGC prior to the MPX clipper, it could use a tweak.

This weekend the amateur radio bands will be chock-a-block with signals like this:

These are the CQ zones which form part of the exchange of signal reports.

I was thinking the same - some songs sound great and then the next song comes on and sounds dull or muffled.

I don't think it's necessarily Freedom though - Dublin City FM, iRadio, Midlands 103 and Red FM all use Omnia's of various models and configurations and just don't sound consistent song to song.

I know that inadvertent ‘no two songs sounds alike’ issue from Omnias over the years but haven’t heard it on Freedom (and they are cranking it nice and loud as you’d expect from some former pirates).

Perhaps they’re using multiple studios (or home set ups); I wonder would that explain some discrepancies.

Also didn’t realise any of those stations were still using Omnia; thought they had gone back to Orban or rivals.

Audio on Connect is far better. Breakaway is fantastic at processing all frequencies.

Were there any pirates on today, the Bank Holiday?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 826 ✭✭✭TheBMG

Connect does sound well but I think 80s music takes compression a lot better than the 90s/00s stuff that’s already mastered to have very little dynamic range.

Jazz music currently on 1206 kHz Dublin. I don't think it was on in recent days until tonight?

PS has been some interruptions tonight, it went off but would return again

Yes that is true , although there are a lots of 80s tracks released in the 90s/00s that are highly compressed compared to the original versions , I have heard a few 'remastered ' tracks on Connect and they sounded fine.

The Omnia decompresses the source audio before reprocessing so the dynamic range issue on 90s/00s tracks should be reduced ,Freedom for whatever reason have changed the processor settings and imho it doesn't sound great.

Dublin City FM initially sounded great when the new processor arrived alas......

Just to add, the Omnia 9 is different to the other Omnias,(and continues to be developed) is made by the Breakaway creator Lief Clesson, so Breakaway One is just the bare bones of the 9.

Within the Omnia 9 SW on front of the processing is a Declipper (from stereotool, hans VZ has a gig with Omnia also) and a Multiband expander (from Lief), this adds more depth and dynamics to the audio, i saw some info recenty that track mastering was clipped to bits after 2002, but a declipper would have little or no effect on anything previous.

Anywho, maybe some engineers don't really understand what these settings do and either have them turned off or turned them up, the declipper could well be the culprit considering the audio is clipped on the MPX Out also which I'd guess would cause some differences or make a track sound a little strange.

     · CIE RADIO TRAIN DAY TRIPSThis lovely poster was used during the 1950s to promote the service. The radio trains were primarily geared to tourism, travelling from Dublin to Galway and Killarney. They were equipped with radio studios and the comperes played records to entertain passengers, selecting the music and also playing requests. They provided commentaries on places of interest along the route, delving into folklore and history, telling stories and reciting poetry as appropriate. On arriving at their destination, passengers were served lunch. Afterwards, they visited local beauty spots. Before returning to Dublin, they were given high tea. Occasionally banquets at Bunratty and Knappogue castles were included in the trips.Lorcán Ó Treasaigh, the main presenter on the trips, enjoyed his work immensely and sought to welcome passengers in their native language, speaking French, Italian and Spanish in his commentaries. The excursions were highly popular among Americans, and some US companies offered them as rewards to hardworking employees. The radio trains also carried pilgrims from around the country to visit the Marian shrine at Knock, Co Mayo. On such occasions, a special ambulance coach was attached to the train. This included kitchen, toilets and special facilities for passengers with disabilities. The radio carriage provided an organ, and all on the train could hear and join with the rosaries and hymns. The radio train gradually gave way to luxury tour buses, and in the early 1970s, the excursions ceased. (Pilgrimages by train continued into the 1980s).. CIE reintroduced the Radio Train in 1995 using a similar format to the original one. In the late 70s, Lorcán Ó Treasaigh was forced to take extended sick leave following an accident. When he returned to full-time work, he joined the CIÉ publicity department and edited the information bulletin Nuacht.(REF: Irish Times and others)

I once met a man who was a presenter on The Radio Train. It was the early 80's and I had just started out on pirate radio - he was very interested in talking to me about the developing pirate scene at the time, but I was totally amazed at his revelation about working on a radio train ….. trains and radio, a perfect anorak combination.

Might that man be the inimitable Mike Doyle…..??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,193 ✭✭✭Ger Roe

Not on this occasion, but he is also a good man to talk to about trains (and radio). 🚊

Vaguely in keeping with the train connection; currently at Milltown Luas stop and getting BBC Scotland on 94.7.

Mid West from Mayo on 96.1.

HeartFM and iRadio battling it out on 105.7 (I don’t see iRadio listed on the channel anywhere so it may be new

Q Radio and Classic also scrapping for 101.1 but Q loud and clear on 101.2

finally, Caroline present and accounted for on 648.

that’s trains, boats and cars for ye !

Christmas FM in Donegal has moved from 105.7 to 106.2 for this upcoming broadcast season. Would tie in with the new iRadio outlet you heard.

listening in Dublin this afternoon and (I’m guessing) Radio Daniella are putting out a good loud signal on 1206am. Good to hear; don’t think any of the Dublin MW pirates have been too active in the last few months
