This is just a hunch, I could be way off, but I get the feeling they're very naive about cover ups. I wouldn't be surprised if many richer (savvier??) Western countries are doing the same but the athletes, associations, coaches.... they're just smarter and better at covering their tracks. Many of the Kenyan athletes come from very humble and poor backgrounds and I wonder how much some of them know about what exactly they're doing. I hope that doesn't sound racist, though it probably does sound condescending.

Kipyegon Bett has died at the age of 26. Won bronze over 800m at London 2017 but received a four year ban for doping in 2018, from which he never returned.

Looks like Brian Fay is on the Melbourne marathon start list, assume he's pacing?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 208 ✭✭SuspectZero

I don't know if many are watching on Eurosport but Ruth Cheptngetich is on 2:08 pace through 25k in the Chicago Marathon. Either going to the most unbelievable woman's athletics performance ever or a monstrous blowup

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,938 ✭✭✭Ceepo

Still on for it just went through 30k. In 1.31

Edit to say 2nd place is 4 minutes behind and just outside world record pace

Went through 5k in 2:06 pace (!), but has slowed to 2:09:09 pace for 30k. She also broken the 20k world record. Nothing to see here I'm sure, but I do like seeing records being broken.

Sub 2:10 for the lady, unbelievable.

Held on like a demon the last two miles.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 208 ✭✭SuspectZero

    2:09:57 finish, absolutely insane

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,938 ✭✭✭Ceepo

    Nuts stuff really.

There's definitely a money aspect to it. I always thought the Lance Armstrong thing was as much financial as chemical doping. A couple of his rivals were caught because they didn't have the same level of support in concealing the doping.

    Not just athletics either.

Track and Field is small potatoes compared to soccer for instance. While the top track and field guys might get maybe half a million (?) a year, the top soccer players earn that per week, and they are now playing like 60 or 70 games per year.

Are we really expected to believe they are not using PEDS? Of course they are. It's just covered up and a blind eye turned to it, there is no culture of penalizing it and no desire to look under the rocks to see the worms and snakes (same as tennis).

    Too much money at stake.

Sub 2:10 is remarkable, but just brilliant stamina, guys! Nothing more to it….and no magic substance can replicate it. Men are sub 2 hours

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,938 ✭✭✭Ceepo

So you don't think the new carbon plate pebax foam shoes, better training practices and better nutrition strategies helped, even just a small bit.

Or you don't think that someone taking "magic substance" doesn't give an advantage ?

Of course things help. That’s called human progress. I also think what she achieved can be done without breaking rules..

Hiko Tonosa ran a marathon national record in Dublin this Morning with a 2:09:42.

Yomif Kejelcha broke the half marathon world record in Valencia with a 57:30. 3 women ran 1:03 in the same race

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,918 Mod ✭✭✭✭yerwanthere123

Kejelcha is also the world record holder for the indoor mile, so he's got serious range. Very happy to see him break another record, an elite athlete across so many distances yet doesn't really have the medals to show for it.

Gidey's world record was given a scare as Agnes Ngetich ran 63:04 for #2 of all time. Two other women ran sub 64, Tesfay in 63:21 and Kasait in 63:32. Taye, who was on WR pace with Ngetich through 5k, finished fourth on her debut in 64:14. How many of these women are running clean is another question though 🙂

Anyone know of any big names doing the senior cross country nationals?

The four locations for Michael Johnson's grand slam track event are now confirmed

    🇯🇲 Kingston, Jamaica (April 4-6)

    🇺🇸 Miami, USA (May 2-4)

    🇺🇸 Philadelphia, USA (May 30-June 1)

🇺🇸 Los Angeles, USA | TBC

Will be interesting to see how this pans out.

Seems very early given the world's aren't til September next year?

UK athletics apparently turned down the option of hosting one as it would struggle to break even.

Clonmel AC athlete William Maunsell fresh from his recent 2.14 and 3rd place ( National) in Dublin has broken the Antarctica marathon in a fantastic time of 2.38. This betters is coach Sean Tobin's time of 2.53 from a few years ago. Absolute insane time in sub zero conditions.

William was running this as part of the 7 marathons in 7 continents in 7 days.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,938 ✭✭✭Ceepo

Willie just followed up his Antarctica marathon win with a 2.34 in Cape Town.

On to Perth now for the next leg

Birmingham were in talks but are instead mulling over the possibility of making a bid for 2029 worlds.

A worlds in Birmingham would be cool, particularly after how successful the Commonwealth games were. I imagine a highly successful, well attended Europeans in 2026 would also help their potential bid.

I wonder is there much to see and do in Birmingham though? I have a provisional plan to go there for the duration of the 2026 championships, but I'm wondering if I might struggle to fill the day aside from the athletics.

You could always try and get your mile PB down, the curry mile that is

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,938 ✭✭✭Ceepo

Round 4 in Perth Australia. And another win for Willie in a another fantastic time of 2.36..

Off to Istanbul Asian side now for round 4.

Round 5 is also in Istanbul, just on the Europe side .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,938 ✭✭✭Ceepo

Round 5 done and dusted, and another win for Willie in a time of 2.43.

No travelling after this one, so it will be a chance to catch up on some recovery.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,938 ✭✭✭Ceepo

Another win and another time of 2.43. That's 5 from 5 now. The man is a machine.

Only 😄 2 too go now, South and north America.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,938 ✭✭✭Ceepo

Unfortunately a DNF and a DNS for Willie on the last 2 legs.

Heat stroke put pay to his exploits yesterday and wasn't recovered enough to start today's event in Miami.

What an unbelievable adventure for him all the same, 5 marathons in 5 days on 5 different continents is an extraordinary achievement especially when you consider the pace he was doing them at.

    The man is a machine.

That's a real shame alright, but as you say still an incredible achievement, and setting the Antarctic marathon record as he went is some serious business
