If you’re porting from a VF plan that you can easily get back, why not give Sky a try?

Sky’s working very well for me now - I was an early adopter and experienced all the issues.

Have the odd connectivity hiccup when handing off from WiFi to mobile data sometimes , whereby it’ll sit on edge for a couple of minutes before connecting to 5G. Possibly that’s to do with a local mast though, although a few others have mentioned it also. It’s not a biggie and thinking about it, it hasn’t happened to me in the last couple of days.

What I do now is I use airplane mode at home, and WiFi calling works (iPhone). And then when I leave wifi it’ll switch airplane mode off and 5G on - both aspects are run automatically via 2 iOS automation routines I created.

I also have a shortcut “button” to toggle airplane mode on/off should I need it, which also fixes the Edge issue. Again I haven’t had to use it in over a week I’d say.

two sims activated with number porting from GoMo. Both took a phone call to get over the ‘paused’ status but both are working well.

Noticed occasional ‘no mobile data’ issues that support claims is resolved with adding the APN.

No hot-spot is the single feature missed for tethering an iPad to the phone. Anyone find a solution to that yet?

The Sky app is kinda awkward to use but I see they’ve a requirement for credit card verification to disable adult sites - the usual suspects! Found that odd as the account owner but fine. I noticed as well that the network settings request to the phone doesn’t work.

No showstoppers for us anyway. If they’d only send on the one order from September that’s still outstanding we’d be sorted.

Hotspot Works on Samsung Android. What phone? There were issues with hotspot on Anpost mobile over Vodafone. Some iPhone users couldn't hotspot iirc. I used to have a problem too with android, solved it by adding 'dun' to the APN type, but it's not been required for android hotspot with Sky.

household uses iPhones. Thanks for the tips. Under Settings|Mobile Service|Mobile Data Network there’s a section for personal hotspot asking for the APN, user name & password.

Adding mobile.sky in the apn name and then backing out of the options returns personal hotspot for use.

Thanks deezell for the tips that gave the idea.

Roaming in Spain at the minute and it hasn't been painless by any means. Refused to pick up a network automatically when I arrived, and after about 20 minutes went over to manual selection. Wouldn't connect to Vodafone ES, but did to Movistar. All 4G only, I wasn't offered 5G. I've since switched back to automatic selection which seems to be working, though it doesn't seem to have ever connected to anything but Movistar and 4G is the best I've been offered.

Goes without saying that VoLTE and WiFi calling are nowhere to be seen., It's functional, but not ideal

Landed in Spain today and automatically connected to movistar but no internet working. Tried to manually change and only options were Vodafone and orange but couldn't connect to either.

Then went into mysky and did a request network settings and that seemed to work.. although only have H+ at minute...after few minutes I have 4G

Was there a sale on flights to Spain or something? ;-)

On a more serious note. For those in Spain (or abroad) what’s the APN changed to?

Might be useful to know for future reference.

I wonder is this the thing where it changes to the Tele2 Sweden APNs when roaming, so when you requested the network settings you got the Sky ones back?

It's strange they don't just stay on Vodafone. Anpost did, it was brilliant in the Netherlands, HD calling, mad fast data, and you could dial local numbers free if you entered the numbers straight, without using 0031 or +31 and dropping the number leading zero, as you would if you were making an international call from Ireland which required topup over your plan.

Is that the only APN file listed?

Update 23/10/2024. GoMo have updated their Terms & Conditions yet again! I assume Eir have done the same but I haven't checked yet. These are the new terms. https://gomo.ie/terms/ @TheDriver

"6.4A. For Customers signing up from 1st November 2024, fair usage data limits and/or data allowances referred to in this agreement, including in Clauses 6.4 and 6.6 or in any associated Fair Use Policy (‘FUP’), shall not apply to the Customer’s domestic data usage. We retain the right however to take appropriate steps for traffic management, where for example other users are likely to be adversely affected by a Customer’s actions."

EDIT: I checked Eir's website, their terms were also updated to the following:

"Unlimited data: Unlimited data refers to domestic data and applies to customers who sign up to prepay Simplicity from 22nd October 2024. See here for full details and terms along with text and data roaming fair use policies."

"For Customers signing up from 22 October 2024, fair usage data limits and/or data allowances referred to in the Simplicity Offer, including in Clauses 14, 15 or 23 of these terms and conditions, or in any associated FUP, shall not apply to the Customer's domestic data usage. eir Mobile however continues to retain its right to take appropriate steps for traffic management, where for example other users are likely to be adversely affected by a Customer's actions."

@EryykTV they need to get better proofreaders in their legal team. Well spotted. Its clear they're just doing unlimited home data.

Yeah, that was the only apn

Hi All - I switched to Sky Mobile 10 days ago due to price increase by Vodafone and the 15 euro for life promotion from Sky. General feedback:

    • Difficult to get Internet working to begin with - had to manually edit APN settings using details on a user forum rather than directly form Sky.
    • No 5G as advertised (issue might only impact Pixel)
    • Patchy mobile network
    • Today voice calls have stopped working altogether

Vodafone emailed me the other day with an offer to get Vodafone SIM only plan (10Mbps only) for 15 euros so I will be calling into them tomorrow with my tail between my legs and going back. They really have been a rock solid network for me over the years, you'd kind of take it for granted until you try something new. I'll see how Sky are looking in 12 months.

Then went into mysky and did a request network settings and that seemed to work..

This sorted it for me, got 5G access points, and more to the point now have VoLTE and WiFi calling enabled which wasn't the case. I'd always imagined that APNs once provisioned would auto provision updates. Guess not.

Anyway, looks like they're getting there

Anyone who cancelled during their cooling off period, did you automatically receive a refund for the amount in credit or did you have to chase it?

I cancelled during the cooling off as the coverage wasn't great. Vodafone coverage isn't great in my area, as I found out. I've had to chase them for it as it was a credit against my mobile account, which isn't active anymore. It wouldn't apply to my broadband account automatically, which I thought it would.

You're one of the lucky ones. Seems your sim is properly 'provisioned '.What model phone? Is your APN listing any different from this. Do you have an additional APN file in the listing's, e.g. IMS

Switched one number to Sky yesterday. The port was very quick and the basics work. It is not perfect and here are the issues:

    1. While download speed is great 80 - 100 Mbps, the upload speed is terrible at 0.3 - 0.6 Mbps. Tried different speedtest servers but is the same. I have full 5G signal on my S23 Ultra and in the same location a vodafone SIM has very decent upload speeds.
    2. VoLTE and VoWIFI not working. I don't have the option to activate it on my samsung phone. These features work with a vodafone/eir SIM

Called Sky but they couldn't do anything to solve these issues. I am in Limerick 3Km from the city centre. Anyone having same issues? Any advice?

Interestingly, having arrived home (Co. Waterford), VoLTE and WiFi calling have now disappeared again. I was on the bus from the airport in Dublin city center when I posted last night. So it looks like the actual access point must have a bearing on availability, but they were there for a while at least!

As regards the APN settings, they're the same as the set you've posted, but with 3 additional ones: "Bearer" (Not specified), "MVNO type" (None), and "MVNO value" (disabled - gets enabled when "MVNO type" is selected). I don't have IMS listed.

    Phone is OnePlus 12R

Yes, I didn't screen grab them, they were unused. That's really odd the items disappeared.

Did your data connection change to H or E perhaps, 2G data, no H+, LTE or 5G symbol. That would do in the VoLte, but I get your pount about the receiverend notvbeing up to it. I've a 5g connection most places but it doesn't trigger the VoLte option. Mines a Samsung S21, but even very new Samsung models are not being provisioned despite having 4G/5G data.

I have both Samsung and iPhone.

S22 Ultra - no VoLTE and no WiFi calling

iPhone 14 Pro Max - both working.

It seems like Sky has perhaps given preference to provisioning iPhones over Android?

My son moved from GoMo to Sky unlimited today. A55 phone. Painless porting. Took a little longer for data to fully function. Good 5G signal and good data speeds so far.

I might move myself. I'm with Three. I only get 4G (if lucky) in my home. Son has 5G in every room in my home on Sky

It would seem so, they even give specific instructions for enabling VoLte and WiFi calling for iphones, but no reference to android other than a via the help bot by model, which gives you the menu steps to the non existent menu items. Maybe they got a deal from apple for their handset inclusive offerings. Maybe Samsung didn't give them an attractive margin.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 137 ✭✭eronayne

It might be worth checking to see that you have VoLTE enabled on your phone, this is a common issue as your handset falls back to "2G" to make a call if VoLTE is not enabled.

As I understand it, you can't 'enable' Volte on an Android phone unless the carrier (Sky) permits it. It doesn't matter if your phone somehow has the choice displayed, it still won't make a call over 4g. With my previous AnPost Mobile Sim I had both Volte and WiFi calling options visible and selected on an S9, but AnPost Mobile still dropped to 2G for calls even though I had 4G data (which dissappears during a 2G call).
