True, as it's just a pointer but a fairly decent one

I absolutely hear you. I just think THIS election is not a typical election.

We can all see that Trump is beneficial for wealthy and Uber wealthy people.

There's a huge advantage in making it appear that the race is close for Trump and his benefactors. It's a lot easier to vote for or follow someone if you think they'll win.

As you accept that bookies don't care about getting it right or wrong, they only care about what makes them the most money and more money is being laid on Trump, and there's very obvious reasons why that's a good thing for Trump...

Would it not make sense to look at the donations received to run the campaign?

The overall amount raised, the average each person donated and the amount of individual donators?

I would have thought that would give a clearer idea of who is really putting their money where there mouth is.

(I have no idea btw, I suspect Harris would trounce Trump in all of those as he seems to be too busy grifting his supporters through caps, cards, coins etc than fundraising for the actual race.)

Indeed- I posted similar a few pages back at got the same replies as you’re getting now.!!!

It’s a nice to know piece of information - and thanks for sharing it with us- I’m taking it at the face value and spirt in which you contributed - I have no “buts” to add

let’s see does the very long trend of getting it right continue for this election or is there a whole conspiracy afoot with the republicans manipulating the odds.

+1 on this. It's perfectly normal for the local school to be the polling station here in Ireland.

I took my son to every election & referendum I've voted in since 2004, his 1st vote was the 2024 Euro & locals.

It's incumbent on us all to make sure that we raise educated & critical voters who are able to both assess candidates & policies aswell as understand exactly how their vote works.

listening to Rte this morning talking to North Carolina voters and they saying that they ll vote for trump as he stands for integrity and cares about them. They sounded elderly tho. And a bit insane.

The shy democratic voter wasn't a thing in 2020 or 2016.

    The question now is:

Have they captured the shy Trump voter accurately?

I think it will be the shy Harris voter this time. After the insurrection MAGA have become increasingly violent, you even had a sheriff in one county somewhere announce he was logging which homes and addresses had Harris yard signs by way of voter intimidation. You have that little scrote this week who stole dozens of Harris yard signs trying to argue it’s not a felony if it’s under $200 (wrong on so many levels), you have people who actively make death threats to democrats all the time. Heck, I won’t even put up a yard sign because I don’t want trouble in deep red territory. I don’t want a sticker on my car because I don’t want to experience the road rage or the vandalism. When I had a Bernie sticker on in 2016, I had a senior engineer in the middle of the entire office calmly explain to me in response how as an ex marine he fully intended to kill the man for being a socialist by “shooting him between the eyes.” If people think the shy Trump voter exists they have another thing coming about the shy Harris voter.

I see Laurence Donegan is touring the US at the moment and writing about meeting people at different events around the country. He is convinced that Kamala Harris will win.

I think Trump wins. He'll win most of the swing states including PA!

I mean I say that because on Monday who was in the booth next to mine but a man with his similarly aged son…

I am going to make a couple of confessions. I can not name a single contestant in Big Brother, Love Island or Dancing with the Stars/ Dancing on Ice. I remember Nasty Nick from the first Big Brother(24 years ago) but thats it. I can't name any group or artist currently in the Top 10. I only found out what Liam Payne looked like last week. As for sports, my knowledge is severely lacking compared to the average Joe.

In the same way there are obvious gaps in my knowledge of popular culture, there are a lot of people out there who have no clue about politics. I consume a lot of news but in the same way that my mind switches off when Big Brother gets a mention, some people switch off for current affairs.

I sometimes think when they ask random people on the street how do they plan to vote, does the person just say the first name that came to mind? I also remember watching live when Kay Burley from Sky News was in New York and asking people how they had voted, she goes to a table of (obvious to me any way) Indian people and asked how they voted and one after the other said "I am from India and therefore not eligible to vote". Before asking people for a soundbite how do they plan to vote, do they establish if the person knows that they are talking about to begin with?

But it's not if single people are drastically impacting the odds. Something which has never been the case previously.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 86,725 ✭✭✭✭Overheal

they’d just complain we’re “shutting down conversation” and have mention of the statements barred from the topic.

There’s a reason so many republicans for Harris exist. Many of them outside hardcore MAGA remember fighting the Nazis and the KGB.

Pointing out major obvious issues with Trump seems to be cheating eg if you point out things like… well Trump is now 78. In previous elections he made great play out of release of medical records. This time round he hasn't released them.

What does that say about his health and his fitness to serve?

Trump needs to be handicapped in this contest apparently, so that just gets memory holed. And it is absolutely guaranteed if Harris wasn't releasing medical records and Trump did, it would be a huge talking point…

Only reason in my mind for a shy Trump voter (voting Democrat in the polling booth) is abortion rights - so mainly women in their 20/30s from staunch Republican voting areas - that’s probably one of the few voter profiles that may have a contingent of non-verbalised support for Harris.

If I’ve taken you up wrong and you mean Shy Trump supporters ? Well some religious ethnic voters have expressed a preference for Trump , presumably because they associate that ironically with being more God like and holy (you couldn’t make it up 😀)- but they don’t appear to be that secret about it either.

There are a few prominent talking heads who say the same. Anthony Scaramucci has been saying for a while that Harris will clinch it, as well, but the most interesting one is Alan Lichtman, with his scientific '13 key' system. It'll be a stressful night in his house, I would say. One thing about Lichtman, though - I'm seeing some ambiguity about whether his system predicts the popular vote or electoral college, or that he switched from predicting PV to EC in 2016?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 86,725 ✭✭✭✭Overheal

I don’t think he’s ever released his records. He’s released letters from sycophants like Ronny “Candyman” Jackson and made claims about passing the test used to screen for dementia but that’s it. If he does release something before election it will be similar trolling efforts to that. But I think he won’t because those efforts ultimately did him no favors after 2016.

All the assassination attempts on Trump have been by republican leaning people. I'm pleasantly surprised there has not yet been an attempt on Harris' life. I imagine it is due in part to her being a sitting VP and therefore gets not just a secret service detail but the full force of the Secret Service and it's sister agencies.

Ive been to the US many times. If I was there now and chose to wear a red Make America Great Again baseball cap, the most I would worry about is someone calling me an idiot. If I was wearing some pro-Harris apparel I would have much greater worries. Like you, I definitely think there are more shy Harris voters out there than shy Trump supporters.

Not really a valuable data set when it's subject to manipulation and has been in this election cycle

Why would this stuff make you reluctant to disclose your true allegiance in an anonymised opinion poll? I mean if you were that paranoid presumably you wouldn't be taking part in the poll in the first place…

    Mad conspiracy theory:

Trump is in part reluctant to release the medical report cause it would state that his bleeding ear was just burst capillaries or something rather than the bullet actually grazing him.

That has been the case since the day the Access Hollywood tapes were released in 2016.

More and more it has been the case in fact. Trump has been allowed to make comments which are passed off as 'that isn't what he meant' while his fans say they like him because he says what is thinking.

The 2 things cannot be true, but he gets a pass because the media loves him enough for what he brings them. Attention. It was the same, but to a lesser degree with Boris Johnson.

I watched a public freakout video of a man in a Burger King, there was a sign right next to him explaining extra sauces were 30 cent but he made an absolute shower of himself so people started recorded him yelling at staff demanding to have a free barbecue sauce. Then he turned his ire on the cameraman, who he accused of being a “liberal” for filming him.

These people have literally become unhinged, and not just over statues or protests etc. but every little thing now since they lost in 2020, in their heads they’ve gone to war or some **** even while they live their droll lives in the myopia of demanding extra sauce at fast food restaurants. Some of them are just itching to identify the “enemy within” and take their beef out with them.

youre correct about the hats. Though I did notice one older man who wore a Harris shirt the other day, he was also in a very affluent area of a blue city. I don’t think he would have tried that in the burger bar I went for lunch the other week, which was recommended to us by a coworker and paid for on the company card so I ignored all the Trump signage out front but all the Trump hats inside and the Trump assassination memorabilia on sale at the counter would lead me to think things would have gotten rough for the guy if he ate there with that shirt on instead of at Cava, the Greek salad bar version of chipotle

people just aren’t picking up the phone or answering their deluge of texts and emails that come overwhelmingly from the campaigns if you’re a donor. Response rates to polls have been falling for a decade now in general. I really don’t know how they conduct polls anymore in good fairness though I live in South Carolina and maybe we aren’t polled that often to begin with for reasons that we aren’t a swing state. You could rightly argue that in the swing states the swing state polls have less of these problems of shy voter. I don’t know.
