hopefully all are safe in bantry, and the surrounding areas, seen a few videos on line and it's not looking good down that part of the world

yea hope all here are ok with it. Amazing it’s so localised. Not a drop of rain here in the midlands all day.

It's just sickening, I'm few miles outside bantry too and all around me main roads flooded early afternoon. 3 hire car's parked on road beside me thought they were driving jeeps and had be towed out after water went over bonnets. Glad brought cattle in just looking like going be long winter. River rose 7ft as was just a trickle yesterday, was a foot over bank and just flowing into my fields earlier.. just sad to look at.

I really feel for ye down there. We had a completely different day here. Heavy shower for 10 minutes at 8 this morning and then was getting sunburnt this afternoon

For such a small country the variety of weather conditions is crazy. Here we were flooded all August but mostly dry weather since. Land is holding up well for October.

Possibility of a major storm for the whole country on Sunday.

One to keep in mind if plans are being made.

Heavy rain and winds arriving from Friday onwards. Looking at the weather forecast, it looks like a biggie. Could make for an early start to the winter for some

    ⚠️Storm watch for Sunday 20 Oct 2024 — boards.ie - Now Ye're Talkin'

Next 7 days looking real bad on the west coast, at least it's not like America where their cardboard houses blow away

Driving heavy rain, shocker of a day. Not as bad as a place in France that got over 800mm in 2 days.

After having an absolute cloudburst of a shower for well over 5 minutes….imo this is a relatively new phenomenon that has become all too common on our fair isle.

More rain fell in that shower than would often come in a days rain.Heavy land simply can’t cope with those type of deluges.

I was getting a bit concerned about youngest as I knew he was on a marine survey that was around Rockall in the last few days. I know the Captain/staff and Marine Scotland ensure their safety but I use the Marine Traffic app to keep track when he is on marine surveys for my own piece of mind. Unfortunately Marine Traffic now want a minimium of €20/month for the privilege of seeing their location live. Do any of ye know of a simular live tracker that is free.

As an aside, youngest just sent me a facebook message saying that they were under engine and heading to Aberdeen before storm Ashley. Our Marine Institute has live tracking on their website (free) for both of their research vessels - the Celtic Explorer and Tom Crean.

Edit to add - a pic he took of Rockall three years ago on a simular survey which I shared on F&F at the time 👍️

    What is a marine survey?

    Hardly asking fish questions?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,666 ✭✭✭✭Base price

From my understanding they tow/trawl a smaller net at different levels of water to catch a sample of fish species and sizes. They account for everything caught including size, weight, species etc including fish that are not commercial species. They do this several times over a specific area before moving onto another area and this helps in providing data for sustainable fishery management. ASFAIK but stand corrected, the UK are still providing their data to the EU after Brexit - I think it may have been part of the agreement.
